Bottom Line
Blazing performance and EvDO support makes this Treo a winner, but its short battery life is less than impressive.
Palm Treo 700p
Treo 700P smartphone - Sprint (CDMA, Bluetooth, 1.3MP, 128MB, SDIO/MMC, Palm OS) Review, by Melissa J. Perenson July 26, 2006
Palm Treo lovers rejoice: The new Treo 700p is here. The $650 (with a two-year contract from Sprint, as of 7/7/2006) unit features a largely improved design, a faster processor, more memory, and a speedy network connection. It's a pricey but worthwhile investment for people serious about on-the-go productivity.
Following in the footsteps of Palm's Windows Mobile-based 700w, the 700p builds on that unit's advancements--including support for high-speed EvDO networks--while retaining the Palm operating system. Both Sprint and Verizon Wireless offer the new device; I tested a shipping version of Sprint's dual-band CDMA 2000 handset. The Treo 700p's physical setup is virtually the same as that of the 700w, providing squared-off keys that improve typing; a roomier, easier-to-press five-way navigational button; and six larger, more clearly positioned navigational buttons--including more prominent buttons for power (red) and send (green).
I don't love all the changes. For example, the new send button functions like that of any cell phone--press it when you've dialed a number, and it initiates the call. A critical function, yes, but the Treo 650 handled it with the phone button, which now wastefully exists solely to take you to the phone application. As a result the 700p loses the centrally located menu button and the second shift button; worse, the home button is now located too far to the right.
Such layout tweaks aside, the biggest changes in the Treo 700p are also its most welcome ones: a faster processor (Intel's 312-Hz XScale) and more on-board memory (like the 700w, it has 128MB total memory, 60MB available to the user). In handling, I found the 700p dramatically faster than my Treo 650, at everything from loading and viewing media to scrolling through files on a 1GB SD Card to switching among applications. You get rapid results when you use the 700p for Internet access, too. Its EvDO connectivity makes browsing sites (using the integrated Blazer Web browser) a pleasure--no more drumming your fingers while you wait for a page to load.
Battery life is less impressive. In our tests of talk-time battery life, it lasted 4 hours, 59 minutes. That's 33 minutes less than the Treo 650 (also Palm OS-based), and 28 minutes less than the 700w--and both of those models' battery-life scores were already among the lowest for PDA/phones we've recently tested.
Sprint and Palm have packed the Treo 700p with a slew of software. For starters, you get the very visual On Demand software, which delivers localized weather information, TV listings, maps, news updates, sports, and phone directories. Also included: My Treo, which helps you make the most of the device and includes a full user guide; the standard version of Pocket Tunes, which replaces the RealPlayer software offered on the Treo 650; Dataviz's Documents to Go 8, for reading and creating Microsoft Office files and PDFs; and Sprint TV, an interface for purchasing streaming media content.
Despite the 700p's poor battery life--and its few design missteps--I found a lot to like. The unit's speed improvements alone are enough to make this dedicated Treo 650 user consider an upgrade.

Duration of ownership: 5 Months
Strengths: NONE
Weaknesses: The phone is the worst. Nothing about the is good. I have had it replaced now going on 7 timesin 5 months because everything about it has failed. It has caused me to loose so much time in my business.
Overall: BEWARE... DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PHONE... I am warning you. Don't waste your money. I waited so I could get my emails, use the bluetooth function and have access to my contacts. Never has worked for more than a couple of weeks at a timer before it started crashing, not getting emails and the bluetooth function acting up. It has been a total disaster. I am telling everyone I come in contact with about how aweful the phone is. The only positive is the the Verizon wirless tech support has been great! This is truely BUYER BEWARE!!!

Duration of ownership: 2 Months
Strengths: Fully feature packed and the ability to carry on device that is a camera, a small PC, a browser and a MP3 player.
Weaknesses: Do to a system quirk the Treo 700p will lock up and shut down daily between 4:00PM and 4:35PM CST. No one has been able to figure out why. (Tlked with Sprint and Palm)
Overall: This is the best universal device on the market for the busy professional. I gives you all of the tool necessary to stay in touch, conduct business, record visual memories of necessary items or events and finally entertain yourself during down time with games and music. Excellant product once the shut quirk is fixed.

Duration of ownership: 1 Week
Strengths: Nice looking, easy to navigate
Weaknesses: Does not sync completely with ical.
Overall: Frustrated until the syncing works. Palm support (really nice people in the Phillipines) say it's not possible to sync past data, and it will miss some current and future data. Mac support do not know the Treo 700p nor understand how it works, not even the Geniuses at the Apple Store Fifth Avenue. Anyone want to help me?

Strengths: LOOKS / FEATURES
Weaknesses: NOT YET
Overall: OUT OF ALL MY FRIENDS WITH PDAS, I WOULD SAY - TREO 700 IS A BETTER PHONE /PDA/CAMERA ANSAMBLE. IT WORKS VERY WELL - AND TAKES GOOD PICTURES IF ADEQUATE LIGHT PROVIDED. IT'S A LITTLE HEAVY - BUT LOOK AT IT'S FEATURES. 5 STAR - NO DOUBT. EXCELLENT PRODUCT FOR TIME BEING! HIGHLY RECOMMEND AS OF TOODAY AND PROBABLY FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS TO COME.

Strengths: EVDO, Palmos
Weaknesses: Slow in switching applications, phone volume.
Overall: My point of view is coming from the treo 650. The only thing I don't like is that the phone switches applications too slow at times. Also I do not like the placement of the application button. It is in the bottom right corner. It used to be in the upper left corner on the 650. I have not gotten used to the new placement over a month. I am right handed and this new placement has made this device a two handed unit because of that. The camera is much better than the 650. There is still no flash. Having streaming video and audio capabilities is awesome! It feels smooth and sleek in your hand. The speakerphone volume seems to be way too low. These are minor issues and would not stop me from purchasing this again.

Strengths: great plan, fun cool gadget
Weaknesses: heavy, resets often, some static
Overall: I have a great plan, so far service is decent though it tends to reset while online once in a while. It has lots of great functions and decent battery life. I wish it wasn't so heavy. The camera is not great, best pics taken in daylight. Indoor photos are too dark as it doesn't have a flash. There's static on a alot of calls, not sure if it's the phone or the service. Cool phone easy to use.

Strengths: email, pda, sprint has good plans
Weaknesses: volume too low at times, delay when dialing, heavy, freezes with internet at times
Overall: So far I've been happy this phone. Email works well and internet is decent, and I'm happy to have all the pda functions. It is a bit heavy, but it does a lot. The main problem is sometimes, the volume gets too low, and I'm unable to hear the other person. Sometimes when I make a call there is no ring, just an echo sound, so I must redial the call-- that is annoying. Also, some delays or freezes when ussing internet. Hopefully, I'll get a replacement that will fix these issues, but even with the problems, it's a phone I like.

Strengths: PDA, high speed internet, email clients, very good 5 way navigator
Weaknesses: Bulky, processor a bit slow, no VOIP client software
Overall: Runs on palm OS with the same processor as in 650 (312 mhz). The speed seems to be a bit improved though and high speed internet is a great feature. Though would love to have better multimedia support but can live with the limited multimedia capabilities. One thing it lacks is the wifi support. Also lacking is voice dialing support with bluetooth headset. All things aside this is certainly the best PDA in the market today.
