Canon Elura 100
Canon Elura 100 Review, by Richard Baguley June 9, 2006
The Elura 100 ($400 as of 5/2/06) is small both in size and in price: In fact, at 2.2 by 3.0 by 4.3 inches, it's one of the smallest camcorders available. Though it's not quite pocket-size, it's compact and light enough to fit into a purse, so it won't drag you down.
Despite that, the Elura 100 fits comfortably in the hand, and the controls are in the right spots for easy shooting. The zoom control for its 20X optical zoom lens sits under the index finger (the digital zoom goes up to 800X, but the image quality is so poor at that level that the digital zoom is unusable), and the record button is under the thumb. It's also easy to switch the camcorder from camera mode to player mode via the mode dial located around the record button. Though most of the controls are accessed through an on-screen menu (which is controlled with the four-way joystick on the back of the camcorder), there are some buttons for features such as the wide-screen mode and for turning off the LCD backlight. There's also a switch for going into program mode or easy mode, which puts most settings at automatic for point-and-shoot use.
It feels as though Canon cut corners to keep the Elura 100 inexpensive. The case feels too flimsy to stand up to rough treatment--the plastic port covers are attached by small pieces of plastic that could easily get torn off.
The 2.7-inch LCD screen is clear and bright, and (unlike the LCDs of many of the other camcorders we looked at) it's a true wide-screen display: When you're shooting in the 16:9 wide-screen mode, video fills the entire screen. The Elura 100 is also unusual for a budget camcorder in that it shoots true 16:9 wide-aspect video: While many other camcorders just trim the top and bottom parts of the video, the CCD image sensor in the Elura 100 is a true wide-screen sensor, which makes for higher resolution.
Though video showed good detail, it lacked the vivid colors we saw from more-expensive models. In low light, problems were more pronounced, with some colors almost vanishing in a gray haze. You can add more light by using the two built-in LED lights, but these provide light only at a range of a few feet. The video didn't look unattractive in good lighting--it just wasn't as good as the video of more-expensive models.
We also noticed a quiet but distracting noise while recording. Though the stereo microphones on the top of the case picked up good-quality sound, they also picked up the motor noise, which was audible in quiet parts of recordings.
The battery life of the Elura 100 was excellent: A fully charged battery lasted just over 148 minutes, long enough for an extended trip. It's a pity that the video quality wasn't better, however, as that's our only serious complaint about what is otherwise a worthy low-cost camcorder.
The Canon Elura 100 is a good choice for budget shooters. While the image quality isn't great, the Elura is a compact, easy-to-use camera that won't confuse novice filmmakers.

Strengths: picture quality, battery life, size, & most of all the price ( paid less than $300 3 MONTHS ago )
Weaknesses: low light resolution not the greatest
Overall: I purchased the ELURA 100 after reading reviews on camcorderinfo.com & it had the ELURA 100 rated as the top camcorder from $0-$1000's camcorders. I have used it to video all of my son's HS basketball games using the wide screen with superb results. I've had to record OT games & still had plenty of battery power left. For ease of use, great picture quality, & price, I don't feel that you can beat this product.

Strengths: size, price, wide screen, zoom settings, easy learning curve
Weaknesses: noise, motor noise, noise, noise, high pitched noise and noise, poor auto focus in low light, grainy pictures in low light
Overall: great camera for the price, but the played back video is filled with a high pitched noise that's recorded from the motor or tape mechanism. If this is going to be an investment for a long time you will have to live with noisy audio. its terrible, and I have not experienced such a noise in any camera before.NOISE all the way.....focusing is slow and cant keep up with zoomlow light video is grainyI think canon should call this off from the market. No wonder it sells so cheap for its specs.

Strengths: Price. AV > DV converter. Widescreen (16x9). Size.
Weaknesses: Low-light performance. Design.
Overall: For the price, it was worth it. It takes great pictures outdoors and the widescreen is nice. Many other cameras in this price range does not take a true widescreen. This one does. I like the AV>DV converter. Again other cameras don't have this feature. Now i can convert treasured analog vhs tapes into digital and put them on dvd discs. The design is nice and compact, but I didn't like the handstrap. It feels awkward holding the camera. It didn't feel like it was natural like I do with other camcorders. The performance of the camera at low-light was also poor. The picture became very grainy and dark. The 2-led lights that you can turn on was pretty much useless more than 2 feet and it gave a bluish tinge on the picture.Overall, I'm still happy with the camera. Just use it on bright, outdoor events.

Strengths: Spacious LCD, Small form factor, quality video
Weaknesses: 20x zoom (could be more)
Overall: I upgraded from a bulky sony digital8 camcorder so I really appreciate the small form factor of Elura 100. I like the fact that it's tiny enough to fit in my palm. Video quality is good enough for my usage, and the sizable lcd screen is great while shooting. I haven't experienced the noisy motor as reported by other reviewers. My only wish is that this camcorder come with a higher optical zoom (my older Sony was 25x). Overall, I feel that Elura 100 is the best value camcorder in its price range.

Strengths: Video performance, size, weight, style
Weaknesses: Low light performance could be better but still ok.
Overall: Nice little camera, good video performance (as expected). Didn't notice any extra noise, but may be just didn't try in a really quiet environment. The controls have different layout compared to ZR45MC I had before, but it's quite easy to get used to it. Good thing there is an integrated lens cap, bad thing you have to remember open and close it manually (just wonder why they didn't implement it to open automatically the moment you turn the camera on in recording mode and close when the camera is turned off). Low light performance is acceptable but i think the external LEDs are useless in most cases.
