Nikon Coolpix P4
CoolPix P4 Digital Camera (8.1MP, 3264x2592, 3x Opt, 23MB Internal Memory, SD/MMC Slot) Review, by Richard Baguley July 26, 2006
Perhaps the most notable feature of the small, lightweight Coolpix P4 is its vibration reduction mode. In our informal tests, this feature did an effective job of reducing camera shake.
The basic controls on the soap bar-styled P4 ($400 as of 6/15/06) are well laid out: The shutter release button falls under the index finger and the zoom sits under the thumb, so both can be used while holding the camera in one hand. The other controls are a little awkward, though: To change the scene mode, you have to set the mode dial to "scene," press the menu button to access the list of 16 scene modes, make your selection, and then press OK to get back to shooting. That's a lot of button pressing.
In addition to full auto and program modes, the P4 has an aperture-priority mode, which is rare in a point-and-shoot. The most unusual feature, however, is the VR (vibration reduction) mode; it moves an element of the lens to compensate for hand shakes, and it's effective. (Four other recently tested models with antishake technology use electronic processing to sharpen their images.) In particular, the P4's more aggressive VR active mode significantly sharpened handheld shots; there was still some obvious camera shake, but it was greatly reduced. The P4 also offers a good selection of image controls, including contrast, sharpening, and saturation.
The camera is a little slow to start up: We found it took about 4.5 seconds before it was ready to start shooting, and there was around half a second of shutter lag. That's not particularly long, but it could lead to missed shots until you get used to it and focus ahead of time by pressing the shutter down half-way.
The images that the 8.1-megapixel P4 took were acceptable. They had a good degree of sharpness; most fine details were well preserved. The noise in the images was also acceptable; even in low light at the ISO 400 setting, the noise wasn't overly distracting, and the noise reduction mode did a good job of mitigating it further. On the downside, colors appeared muted compared with those from similar models in our tests; the images looked well exposed, but lacked impact. Also, details seemed much softer at the higher ISO settings: At the maximum of ISO 400, the images were a little blurry on close examination.
The battery life from the 1100-mAh lithium ion battery was an above-average 270 shots.

Strengths: Size, 8MP, Auto Mode, 2.5" LDD
Weaknesses: No View Finder
Overall: This is a great little compact camera and the second Nikon Coolpix that I have owned. It is solidly constructed, and takes great pictures. The 2.5" LCD is great. I love the size, it fits in my pocket. With a 3 year old, my problem was my old Nikon was just too big to carry around everywhere, so I missed a lot of great moments. Not anymore. I recommend this little camera.

Strengths: weight, size of screen, multiphoto option, price, reduced vibration
Weaknesses: slippery body, camera design--fingers in front of lens?
Overall: I have a nikon 850 I bought years ago and loved it because it felt great in my hand and was easy to use. I took movies, slides and night shots to just play with the camera. It looks like what a camera should look like to take good pictures. Silly huh? This new one is small and a bit slippery that one should always use the strap.I'VE OWNED IT ONE WEEK--so no revelations about quality and using the vibration reduction feature.

Strengths: 8.0 MP for a reasonable price, lots of manuals controls and user friendly.
Weaknesses: 3X Optical zoom, picture gets fuzzy in full zoom
Overall: Not too big and heavy but pocket size and with 8.0MP, its a good camera. Useful for both amateurs and advanced amateurs. My wife uses it as a simple point and shoot where as I toggle with advanced features. The P3 version has a wireless function but I think P4 is better as its a bit cheaper. You could spend those additional $100 for buying a higher memory card. P.S: Please be aware that a Card with MORE than 2GB memory is not advised for the P4. And for info, I bought my camera at dell for $320.

Strengths: Flexibility, excellent pictures, great video and sound pickup, easy to use controls, 2 vibration reductions, review picture without extending lens. in camera guide book.
Weaknesses: miss glass view finder in bright sun.
Overall: I consider it my compact SLR. It has so many possible settings, I enjoy learning them as needed. The auto setting is very adequate for most shots. Face recognition focus in portrait mode is fun. It brackets a face even off center and bracket turns green when face is in focus. Press review button 2 seconds and screen lights up without lens extending. Great for editing without wasting battery. Battery lasts long. Battery and disc are accessible even on tripod. Bought a 5" flex leg tripod to use as a handle, like in the camera store, and tripod. Tripod hole is on extreme left bottom. ISO and WB are on the dial for quick changes. I stopped a hovering bee in the air at 400 ISO. Program mode shutter fired at 1/1026 sec. I forced the flash. Cropping made it 20 times bigger with good detail thanks to 8.1MP. Carry the camera and spare battery in my pocket. Recommend 1G disc. Can shoot several videos and many shots with room to spare. Two vibration reduction settings help a lot. Telephoto and VR(1) work in video mode. In menu, press telephoto button to get in camera guide book explanation of menu item. Control buttons are well placed and easy to use. Screen is large and bright. Picture Project software with camera is easy to use and corrects lot of user mistakes. I researched many cameras and definitely recommend the P4.
