Canon's new Pixma iP6700D photo printer is the successor to the company's iP6600D, one of our 100 Best Products of 2006. I was eager to see what Canon added to our midrange favorite, but found it largely a case of evolution, not revolution.

Canon Pixma iP6700D
iP6700D Review, by Danny Allen August 28, 2005
The $200 iP6700D is first and foremost a photo printer, and in our tests it produced high-quality prints, worth a Very Good score, on photo paper. However, although the images looked vibrant, our jury noted that skin tones often appeared a little too bronzed.
The device is less adept at printing text. Unlike the $230 Canon Pixma iP5200R photo printer, it doesn't use pigment black ink; as a result, its text output wasn't as dark, and we also noted fuzzy edges on some characters.
Like its predecessor, the iP6700D printed 3.2 full text pages per minute and generated graphics at 1.5 ppm--no challenge to the iP5200R's marks of 8.7 and 2.9 ppm. The iP6700D produced a 5-by-7-inch photo in 45 seconds, a little sluggish next to the $150 HP Photosmart 8250, which does the job in 29 seconds.
The iP6700D retains Canon's stunning 3.5-inch color pop-up display that makes light work of menu navigation, image previews, and basic photo touch-ups without the need for a computer. To that end, the iP6700D has a variety of means of communicating with devices, beyond its USB 2.0 computer connection. Its infrared interface can receive images from supported phones, and an $80 add-on provides wireless Bluetooth printing from suitably equipped camera phones, PDAs, laptops, and desktop PCs.
A direct-print port also lets you use a USB cable to print from a PictBridge-compatible digital camera.
One notable new feature: The iP6700D incorporates what the company dubs the "Canon-to-Canon Direct Advantage." When you use the printer with select Canon cameras, you can touch up photos, print a contact sheet, and more, all from the camera's controls. Unlike some competing models, though, the iP6700D still won't let you print images from a portable USB drive plugged into the direct-print port. The printer's two media card slots read most common card formats, but you'll need an optional adapter to use Memory Stick Duo, miniSD Card and xD-Picture Card.
The iP6700D adds support for several new paper sizes and Canon's Fine Art Photo Rag paper. The printer uses an underside cassette drawer and an upright sheet feeder that both hold up to 150 sheets of plain paper. An automatic-duplexer setting allows for double-sided prints. Canon rounds out the package with its self-branded software, including Easy-PhotoPrint (basic photo editing/printing), Easy-WebPrint (an Internet Explorer toolbar that scales Web pages for print), and PhotoRecord (photo album creation).
The iP6700D is a good-quality six-ink photo printer with a nice LCD and connectivity options for printing without a PC. However, text isn't its strongest point, and iP6600D owners don't really need to upgrade unless the new model's improved paper support or Canon-to-Canon feature is on their wish list.

Strengths: Individual ink cartridges , High quality photo printing
Weaknesses: Expensive Cartridges
Overall: I've had quite a few color printers over the years. This is my first Canon Pixma and I admit the color is really accurate. For the first time I don't have to deal with too much ink on the page or colors that don't appear as they do on my monitor or in real life. The printer hibernates all by itself which I like, so if I'm not using it for a week or so, I don't have to remember to shut it off as I do with the other printers. I've had great luck with it. The only downside so far for me is the cost of replacement ink cartridges. I bought one full set of Canon cartridges for this printer at Best Buy and paid almost half of the original cost of the printer. Canon has made it much more difficult (although not impossible) to use compatible cartridges by including a proprietary IC in each cartridge.

Strengths: Fast, quiet, high quality photo prints.
Weaknesses: 6 ink cartridges (can get expensive), though could be worse.
Overall: This is my second canon printer. I upgraded from the i560 and what an upgrade it has been. I thought my old printer produced good pictures. This printer produces great pictures. The color and quality of the prints are fantastic. The LCD monitor is nice, but I print out everything from my computer post editing. Great printer. Would highly recommend

Strengths: User friendly menu, True and vivid colors, Dual feed trays for different size prints, Pop-up display screen
Weaknesses: None
Overall: Maybe I am partial to Canon products, but this printer is awesome when using high quality Canon paper. You can't go wrong for a printer in the $100-$150 range (when I purchased mine). I also recommend at least a 6+ MP camera to fully take advantage of this printer's capabilities.

Strengths: Print Quality
Weaknesses: Expensive Cartridges, Slow
Overall: I purchased this product from Staples as it was cheaper at the time. I am in love with this printer. It creates high quality photo's quickly. It has several great features included and does come with handy software for making adjustments either on your PC or on the printer itself. One thing I must say however, is that the type of photo paper you are using makes a HUGE difference. Epson Premium Glossy is by far the best when used with this. It is, in all honestly, difficult to tell the difference between a digitally printed photo and a traditional film photograph. The printer itself is not very cost effective for those with a budget in mind. The only thing that is missing from the package is the much needed USB female/female cord to attach it to the pc for a direct pc print. The unit has a very clean viewing screen. On board controls are very user friendly and even has some extra nifty printing features such as sepia toning. I really recommend this printer for those wanting an outstanding photo at an even better price!

Strengths: Multiple, individual color cartridges, photo print quality
Weaknesses: Initial price, cost of replacement catridges, desk space
Overall: After trying out several different printers (we still have 3 of them) this is by far our favorite for photo printing. We were doing the costco online orders and picking up in the store (still do for the 8x10's) but this is so much more convenient and the quality is at least as good (we calculated the overall cost of paper and ink, and it works out to a bit cheaper as well). No complaints for quaility or functionality, just cost and size. We never use the different memory stick plug-ins, just print from the computer.
