In almost every measure besides performance, where it unfortunately hung around the rear of the bunch in our October issue's roundup review, the Belkin N1 is a star. It is head and shoulders above the rest of the products we saw in design and usability, with Apple-like attention to detail in the packaging, manuals, interface, and help files. It also has top-notch features, a lifetime warranty, and excellent support.

Belkin N1 Wireless Router
N1 Wireless Router Review, by Becky Waring August 25, 2006
On opening the Belkin box, the first thing you see is a large card completely illustrating all the possible physical connection possibilities and detailing the order in which they should be made. Cables are numbered to match the card. The setup CD worked flawlessly, detecting our DSL modem settings correctly and automatically connecting us to the Internet. It then directed us to the Web utility to set up wireless encryption.
The N1's 103-page PDF manual was the longest and most comprehensive in the group. Every setting option was clearly explained, along with its implications.
As for features, the N1 is one of only two routers in the batch to support WPA/WPA2 Enterprise encryption and Radius server authentication for use in office and educational environments. It also has a full complement of router capabilities, including QoS support.
But while the N1's speed at close range is several times that of an 802.11g router, its overall performance simply wasn't as good as that of the other products in this group (especially the Airgo-based lines). Performance in our long-range tests was particularly erratic, even compared with that of the Broadcom-based draft-n lines.

Weaknesses: OVERHEATS!! Needs a fan to work!
Overall: I have worked with MANY networking devices, but this one was one of the trickiest! Out of the box it runs well, but after 2-3 hours of use, it halts! Even when you reboot every device connected to the network, it will still stop working!! After I TOUCHED the box after one of the times it halted, I saw why. The device was as hot as a frying pan. Recommendation, place a small fan near the box and make sure all sides are well ventilated. As far as Belkin is concerned, why was this not tested in REAL WORLD CONDITIONS?

Strengths: Give thanks each day for not having to call customer support.
Weaknesses: Getting lost in the shuffle. The device is probably fine; however, you must rate your experience. I got a lemon and customer satisfaction followed suit.
Overall: Tremendously horrible experience. I have made 8 phone calls (so far). It was agreed after the 5th that is was a faulty router. They upgraded me; however, I spent 6 hours and 23 minutes on the phone, over 5 days, to get this much satisfaction. They said they would have someone call me back 6 times and they never did. That is sad customer service. I was nothing but polite until the 7th call I made. Oh yeh, and I had to give them my credit card # and pay return shipping for their faulty device. What a great set up. You might want to try a company other than Belkin.

Strengths: Ease in setting up, lifetime support, typically short wait for telephone support.
Weaknesses: Drops service. Range not as advertised as it has about the same strength as my old NetGear router.
Overall: Easy to setup and use the router. Technical support is always there and support is via telephone and for the life of the product. However, there has been a problem of dropping connection which occurs about once every day or two (sometimes a shorter period of time). To get back on line you have to power down and back up. Annoying. Spent hours with tech support to correct this problem over many months but to no avail. Belkin even sent me a new unit but it had the same problem. Works great when it works but the dropped connection is unacceptable.

Strengths: good range, but not important here
Weaknesses: excessive dropouts
Overall: done with belkin. for the past few weeks i?ve had more dropouts than a 70?s highschool. i?m not some tech geek, but i?m not a newbie and this thing sucks, 3 sessions with tech support - i now speak full punjabi and hindi now, and nothing works, 3 email sessions with tech support and all i did was waste paper and ink. all in all each time they all said the same thing - firmware update, re-set and you will be very very fine. well things arent very very fine. there are some other issues but arent worth mentioning if the most basic function of the machine doesnt work why waste time with other items. wife said i was getting a linksys for christmas so i can wait. after this i?m gonna shred this thing in the garbage disposal and mail it back to belkin - with my regards of course

Overall: Easy to set up, but crashes all the time, needs reset every day. Also range is not that good. Nortel PVN does not work and Belkin support is not answering emails concernig it. I guess they don't have a fix. This is the last Belkin product I ever bought.

Strengths: Looks great, easy to set up using the supplied CD (ONLY!), LED display very helpful
Weaknesses: Crashes when turning on security, MAC-control, disable SSID broadcast will not accept @ in user-name
Overall: Warranty replacement. The first replacement arrived. I connected via Ethernet and use my web browser to connect to their set-up page, without a problem. My DSL provider, BellSouth/AT&T, uses "connection type" PPPoE. When trying to enter my user name I kept getting a "ULR error", the router would not accept the @ symbol in the user name field. This prevented me from being able to connect to the Internet. After approximately 6 phone calls, I was still unable to get the router connected to the Internet. I became committed to finding the problem myself; I couldn't bear a 7th call. I inserted the "Setup Assistant" CD, supplied with the router. After a couple of clicks I was connected! I scratched my head? puzzled? why was I unable to change connection types through my web browser? Still puzzled by this unanswered question? I proceeded to TRY and set the security the same way it was on my Pre-N. The first thing I attempted to do was block the "SSID" address from being broadcast. It worked so well? my computer couldn't find the network. In order to reestablish a wireless connection, I had to "restore factory settings" and restart the router. After a half dozen attempts I gave up? so much for that security feature.Unable to hide my network, the next thing I attempted to due was set security through the "Security Mode" feature. Regardless of which option I selected? I was unable to connect too any of my four wireless computers, Mac OS X Tiger or PC Windows XP (both up to date). The only way to reestablish a connection was to "restore factory settings" and restart the router? what fun? what joy! Left with no other choice I called Belkin customer support? AGAIN! After several attempts and 5 hours on this problem, Belkin finally concluded the router was defective and sent a replacement. Tired of waiting I went to a local store and purchased the same model. After all? what are the odds of having two defective routers? Apparently100%. In the meantime we are now left with an unsecured wireless network that we rely on for online banking and paying bills? not very comforting. This time Belkin convinced me the problem is with my Internet provider. After investing two hours with BellSouth on the phone? they sent a service technician. When connecting directly from the modem to my computer via Ethernet we had no problem connecting. Establishing an Internet connection was not an issue. We are now certain the problem is with the router. Five days later the third router showed up? and I started all over again. With each replacement, I attempted to search for new firmware, with no luck. Each time I logged on to the ?router setup? page using the ? firmware update? option I received the following message ?There is no new firmware update available for this Router! ?. By this time I had learned my lesson, I was no longer willing to waste my time by talking to anyone lower than level 2 support. This time after only two calls? I was directed to the recently posted firmware. The firmware was posted one week earlier, but could not be located when using the ? firmware update? option on the router setup page. After updating the firmware I was able to block the "SSID" address from being broadcast and do my online banking. Now at least my Mac?s can use the wireless connection, still without security, the PC drops the connection within 5 minutes. This never happened with the two prior units. Another thing I noticed with this model is the wireless signal doesn?t seem to be as strong. That may be an unfair observation since I have never had a device that function properly.A part of the consideration in making the choice to buy a Belkin product was the fact that it comes with a ?Lifetime Warranty? and customer support. With this model it may very well take a ?lifetime? of customer support to get it working. What good is a ?Lifetime Warranty? if the replacement option doesn?t work!!!!!
