Duration of ownership: 10 Months
Strengths: One of the fastest burners at one of the lowest prices. Does everything from DVDs to Lightscribe.
Weaknesses: One of the louder DVD Burner out there. Does not achieve rated burner speed (i.e. 48x, 16x, ect..) until the very end of burning session.
Overall: Excellent deal at Under $40. Does everything except Blu-Ray. Noise level is sometimes unacceptable.

Strengths: Great writing speed and copying speed
Weaknesses: none that i know of
Overall: This is quite an amazing drive I use it for basically everything that requires a dvd drive I honestly love it. The writing speed is great and not to mention you get lightscribe too so you got a great feature added on. Great buy for anyone looking for a reliable dvd drive.

Strengths: This is a very good product to use. The lightscribe so far has shown no errors what so ever. Fast burn times.
Weaknesses: The software is quite buggy. I recommend something of goodness such as nero or somethign along those lines.
Overall: This is a wonderful product to buy. I was not a member of sams club so, that put a bit of a post in my way. No fear though, this product I found was avalible at www.geeks.com and www.zipzoomfly.com

Weaknesses: software bundle (CyberLink) is buggy and their tech support will not help. No toll-free support on software.
Overall: I have made 3 calls to LG tech support on 3 days and held for 15 min. when a recording asks for my phone number. The recording said I would be called back shortly. I have not been called back and it has been 3 days since my first call. I bought 2 of these units at Samclub - I intend to return them since I have not been able to get tech support on the software supplied with the unit. The unit works fine with parts of the software and is quiet. CyberLink stated that their bundled software was not supported although they did advise to revert to IE 6 stating that IE 7 was buggy. After following their suggestion I was able to receive their unsolicited advertising but PowerProducer still hangs my computer. The link to the Nero update was again advertising. I did download a free trial of their latest suite which was extremely large and portions did not run. The Nero software made numerous changes to my computer causing several problems. It might be ok on a computer dedicated to Nero but does not play well with others. Bundling with better software and improving tech support would improve my opinion of LG. The hardware may be great but I would never buy software from either of the companies mentioned here.

Strengths: Fast write speeds, as fast as most 18x burners. Very low error rate, lower than many much more expensive models. Fairly quiet most of the time. Lightscribe is impressive.
Weaknesses: Doesn't support 3rd party error checking and doesn't have buffer over run protection. Sometimes the clicking noise noted in other review sites rears up.
Overall: Just a great product. As noted the Lightscribe is impressive both to me and others. It does take awhile, but you can just run some other program while waiting, it doesn't interfere. The low error rate I got from independent testing on other sites as the LG doesn't support checking software, but I haven't had a single coaster yet and the disks read on every other machine I've tried them on. Burns are fast and quiet. The software is extensive for OEM junk. There's no over run protection, so you have to be careful about what speed you pick to rip, but common sense will keep you from burning a coaster. I don't know about availability problems. The unit was available on sale at Circuit City for $60, regular $80, in stock. I got mine at Sams for $50, several units in stock. Highly recommended, it is the #1 DVD burner for a reason.

Overall: I too looked around the web, trying to find a source and couldn't find one. BUT, it's available at Sam's club. I just paid $49+ for it (10/19/06). Haven't opened the box yet, but it says it comes with Nero Express and InCD.

Strengths: Light Scribe Writes all 3 formats and Price
Weaknesses: None found
Overall: Initial impression it is all the review said it would be, followed the link to LG and there directed to SAM's. Seemed to have plenty and was under $50. but none of the usual on line vendors had them.

Overall: Cant really understand how a DVD drive can be rated #1 when as of the time of this writing, even using bots, this model cant be found for purchase in the US. Maybe someone else will have better luck. Meanwhile the #2 unit(Samsung 182d) can be found all over the net..I guess no light scribe makes it #2 to a non-existing unit (for consumers at this time).
