Fans of Samsung televisions won't be disappointed by the company's latest 42-inch plasma, the HP-S4253. It has a shiny piano-black finish, and it earned fairly good marks for image quality in our tests. Though prices on plasmas have been falling dramatically, this set's $1999 price (as of September 8, 2006) makes it higher than several competing units we tested at the same time.

HP-S4253 Review, by Kalpana Ettenson October 24, 2006
The HP-S4253 performed fairly well in our tests, with jurors awarding it particularly high scores on our DVD test. Colors and skin tones in scenes from our test movies, Seabiscuit and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King looked bright and accurate. The plasma also fared well with high-definition content, though some jurors found that the HP-S4253 did better in darker scenes than in brighter ones. Standard-definition pictures, on the other hand, looked pixelated, and skin tones acquired a greenish hue.
The S4253 offers some extras that other 42-inch plasmas don't, though it doesn't include everything we'd like to see. On the plus side, you get several methods of screen burn-in prevention; integrated SRX surround sound; and a built-in on-screen equalizer for adjusting the sound to your liking. Our jurors found the audio clear and vibrant, and quite loud when appropriate.
The set offers plenty of connections, including two sets of component inputs, one S-Video input, and a VGA input for connecting a PC to the TV. The plasma also includes two HDMI inputs, permitting you to hook up a DVD player and a cable set-top box via their best connections (provided that those peripherals have them, of course). Audio ports include optical audio-out and digital coaxial-out, as well as three sets of analog outputs. The HP-S4253 lacks a CableCard slot, however, which is an attractive feature of some of the other 42-inch plasmas we've tested recently.
Like the menus on other Samsung models, this one can be made transparent, so it doesn't obtruct the content you're watching. The remote was fairly easy to use, though some buttons on the bottom, such as the one for activating the TV's picture-in-picture capability, were small and could easily be overlooked. The TV lacks advanced control over color adjustments, however; instead, you get only basic controls for brightness, sharpness, color, and tone.
The S4253 is a well-rounded 42-inch plasma that delivers fairly strong image quality and great sound, along with some versatility with its connections. But its lack of a few key features--a CableCard slot among them--keeps it from being a true caviar product.

Weaknesses: The picture quality is very poor especially in dark scenes and fireworks sences. Vey noisy and especially red noises in dark scene will make you suprise! Poor grayscale.
Overall: This last year's Samsung TV was the worst I have ever seen. I expect this year's better.

Duration of ownership: 3 Months
Strengths: Nice HD picture. Very clear and vibrant color
Weaknesses: TV could use some more sound input ports for optical cables
Overall: Tv was great for about the first 2 months. We then started to get a blue fuzz on the left hand side of the screen. This only shows up after the set has been on for about 1 hour. Tech came out and tried to fix it but did not stay long enough to see if the problem was fixed. Called Samsung back and they set me up with another Tech service guy. He has so far not come out to service the tv because he said " he has another set that is doing the same thing in his shop and so far he nor Samsung can figure out what is wrong". He also said that this is becoming a common occurance with some of the Samsung models. I would hope that Samsung would just buck up and admitt that there is a problem and replace the set. The longer this goes on the worse I feel about the company. Untill Samsung takes some corporate responsibility and the problems are corrected, I would not recomend buying this set.

Strengths: Great picture quality, just as good as panasonic and lg's plasma or even better.
Weaknesses: none so far, hopefully i wont experience burn-ins
Overall: i use this to play my ps3 games and watch blu-ray also. for best quality in my opinion, should set your contrast around 65-75, brightness around 55-60, color between 35-43, and sharpness around 0-15, and color temp is normal, not cool or warm.

Strengths: Initially a good picture and customer service answers the phone quickly
Weaknesses: Easy screen burn
Overall: TV is five months old, we work 9-5 jobs and watch it at night only and sports on weekends. We have comcast and watch as much HD as we can. The sides of the screen are burned. There is no fix for this nor is this covered by the warranty. It is considered abusive use. We are your normal TV watchers and did what normal people would do. Once you get screen burn you are toasted - goodbye $1500. The worst electronic decision I ever made. Their tech people claim if more than 5% of your total usage is not 16:9, then you have abused the use of the tv and it will burn. Buy LCD they are harder to burn. Also avoid the Best Buy extended warranty - it does not cover this problem and if you call them to get a tech to come to your house they tell you it's $75 if they find screen burn.

Strengths: size is perfect not too big but definitely not small. color is vibrant...HD is clear as a 8mega picture
Weaknesses: non HD channels actually look better on a tube...
Overall: I had been searching for a plasma tv for 6months and research Panasonic, Hitachi, and Samsung.I was impressed by all of them but the samsung stood out for the rest due to the elegant style of the set.the samsung has yet to disappoint me...the only troubling thing is the remote didn't work with my other equipment. But that's OK I'll be buying a harmony 880 remote anyways..

Strengths: Decent picture until mass problems
Weaknesses: Burn in after 2 months, and minimal usage. Ghosting also a problem now.
Overall: This was the worst electronics investment i ever made. I've already experienced burn in after only 2-3 months and minimal usage. Both store and Samsung failed to stand behind their product - told me too bad. The customer service at Samsung actually made the problem worse after instructing me to run several different utilities in hopes of helping with the burn in. The utilities made the burn in worse, and then caused ghosting on all the pictures. I told them about this, and they didn't seem to care - said it would not be covered.I will never buy another Samsung product again.Just wanted to share.

Weaknesses: No Cable Card Slot
Overall: I have had this TV for about 5 months. Prior to purchasing I looked at all the big names and reviews. I viewed this unit next to a comparably priced Hitachi, Panasonic and Toshiba. There was no comparison. To get the full impact you have to view these sets next to one another. I have seen the price drop about 150 since my purchase.I love this TV so much I am considering another for my living room. You can not go wrong.
