Tested (like all models) at vendor defaults with calibration, the Mitsubishi WD-52631 exhibited poor color in many of PC World's TV tests, which dragged down this 1080p DLP's overall performance scores. In subsequent viewings of a Seabiscuit DVD, twiddling with the TV's settings corrected the distracting orange-yellow cast. Nevertheless, this 52-inch HDTV, with a street price of $2499 (as of September 8, 2006), was deemed merely Fair by our panel at time of testing.

Mitsubishi WD-52631
WD-52631 Review, by Roy Santos October 24, 2006
The Mitsubishi TV set showed strength in a few areas. One juror discerned good brightness and contrast. Many others, however, had trouble picking out the good qualities from the persistent orange-yellow cast. In high-definition tests, a scene with a red car and a man wearing a dark green shirt appeared oversaturated and unnatural. A George Lopez scene elicited similar responses from the jury. Skin tones were not true-to-life, and curtains and wood grain showed exaggerated artifacting. Shimmer on a train in another scene looked realistic, but green tone reproduction suffered.
Our test unit didn't fare much better in standard-definition scenes. The turf on a baseball field looked especially pixelated, and colors were again oversaturated. A juror noticed that neutral baseball uniforms seemed "too blue" while another made the same observation when viewing a dark scene from a DVD of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. The bright racing jerseys in Seabiscuit seemed washed out.
Like many other built-in speakers, those that adorn Mitsubishi's HDTV are average, though adequate for everyday use. In Seabiscuit's climactic scene, however, theaudio sounded rather flat. Still, the 10-watt speakers reproduced the highs of the brass-and-strings-laden soundtrack clearly, and maintained distinct dialogue and sound effects simultaneously. Sound enhancement presets, such as surround and simulated stereo, improved the audio experience. But if you put this king-size TV set in a large room, you'll need better speakers.
While watching Seabiscuit, we adjusted the screen so successfully that the set began to justify its price. Mitsubishi uses a newer six-color wheel that lets you adjust yellow, cyan, and magenta in addition to red, green, and blue. The on-screen display seemed well-organized and easy to use, though hardly extraordinary. A simple black rectangular remote with white buttons accompanying the TV allows you to navigate the OSD. It's partially illuminated: The middle buttons, which control the main TV functions, light up when you press a button. You can use it control up to five devices, including a DVD player and a cable box.
The unobtrusive all-black construction of this HDTV is ideal for buyers seeking a unit that will blend in rather than stand out. Mitsubishi includes a generic manual for three models. (The main difference among the three appears to be that the other two models had CableCard slots, whereas the tested model did not.)
The Mitsubishi WD-52631 may require some fine color adjustments to achieve pleasing colors. It supports 1080p resolution and has a six-color wheel, two HDMI, and even a DVI-I input for computers, among many other connections. Of course, $2499 is a premium price, and fans of this brand may need to use this model's features to the fullest to justify purchasing it.

Strengths: Full 1080p. LARGE 53" widescreen. Splitscreen. Multiple inputs(HDMI included )Inuitive plug n play inputs. Quiet.
Weaknesses: Modest speakers.
Overall: Much of what has been written about this set involve early models that were prone to bulb failure. I can say that after viewing this tv for four months that it has no problems. It's pictures remains to be one of the best I've seen. Furthermore, it's quiet; as quiet as a laptop computer. And at full 1080p with HD cable it's pictures are crisp and breathtaking. Even normal DVDs look better. It's onboard sound is slightly lacking but adequate. Simply connect your hometheater to it's many inputs. I love this tv. I got mine at circuit city for under $1300 with 0% financing. AWESOME.

Strengths: Good picture, light weight
Weaknesses: Slow response on remote control, local stations don't broadcast in 1080p
Overall: I had received a notice of the recent sale items at Circuit City the other day and it turned out that they had this unit somewhat reduced. By combining it with a 10%-off coupon that I had, I was able to get the unit for $1558.79. Although this included free shipping, since the store is fairly close to me, I decided to drive over there and pick the item up myself. It's bulky enough that you might have a bit of trouble getting it in a car, but it fits easily in the bed of a shortbed pickup. It only took Circuit City about 5 minutes to bring the item around and put it in my truck. It's light enough that my 12-yr-old daughter and I were able to easily transfer it from the vehicle to inside my house. Actually, it's light enough for one person to handle -- it's just a bit too bulky for a single person to get a good grip on it. Even with the lamp control set to it's lowest setting, the unit is very bright. The user interface for removing channels could be improved a bit in that it would be more useful if you could see what was on the channel while you're going through the editing of the channel list instead of having to go into the menu to delete the channel and then exit from the menu to change the channel. The remote control lights up when you press a button, so you don't have to memorize every remote control button just to use it in a darkened room. For the most part, I'm using the unit with DishNetwork, but without their HDTV package. The display of the signal from composite and S-Video looks very good. Since I didn't have a second RG-8 cable run to the wall for antenna input, I just hooked the unit up initially with a Recoton powered set-top antenna that I had around the house. I was quite surprised that it ended up getting a good HDTV signals. A couple of the channels ended up a bit weak, but it works well enough for use until I can run another RG-8 cable down that wall.

Strengths: Super picture, easy to use
Weaknesses: Remote control, not sensitive enough at times and to sensitive at other times (volume control)
Overall: Super picture even on non HD programs. Had problem with distortion of picture until I got HD service. Now the only distortion problem I have is some of the commercials are distorted. I am getting super picture without using expensive cable connection. I get terrific picture during day time viewing and I have two large windows facing the screen.
