Sharp Aquos LC-37D90U Review

- The Sharp Aquos LC-37D90U scored well in our TV tests overall, though not as well as others of its size. This 37-inch LCD HDTV produced good skin tones, but it also showed a tendency to pixelate. A few jurors noted excessive shimmering on the stubble of a talk show host. Details of dark backgrounds in a scene from Joan of Arcadia were deemed as Good, though one panel member commented that the school's walls seemed "splotchy" and "pixelated." The LC-37D90U achieved average scores in a George Lopez scene, with mixed reviews from jurors. One commented that skin tones showed "nice nuances," while another thought colors were "oversaturated." A wine train scene showed striated clouds and slightly dull green tones. The seeming grittiness of some scenes in our bright-lights test was distracting.

    Duration of ownership:

    Strengths: Picture quality

Weaknesses: I can't think of any.

Overall Evaluation: I read reviews like those found here about this tv and a hand full of others, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung. I read experts reviews next and settled on the Sharp. It arrived with the power supply defective, dissapointing but Sharp stepped right up and replaced it immediately through a local factory service tech. I am extraordinarily impressed with this tv. I am not a tekkie when it comes to consumer electronics but I can and did comparison shop both on line and in the local stores to see up close and personal and in my opinion Sharp really nailed it. I also read in quite a number of reviews that people were delighted with their purchase of the Oppo 970 DVD player so I ordered one of those for $150 through Amazon. It plays DVDs in just about every format, CDs in just about every format and the experts reviews consistently rate it above almost every player in the $1000+ range. It only handles one DVD or CD at a time but the quality is astonishing. Read more about this unit before you buy!

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Excellent image. Easy setup. 5.1 audio decoding and interface. Multiple HDMI inputs. Dynamic room lighting compensation.

    Weaknesses: No CableCard capability.

Overall Evaluation: This Sharp AQUOS HDTV is impressive for the cost. It has the best image among all the HDTVs that I have seen. The setup is automatic and from out of the box to a excellent display of HD programs within 30 minutes. The style and color of this television allows it to sit on any surface and look great. I have it on top of a base cabinet right out of the box and required minimal cables that are nicely dressed out of the way. There are plenty of manual setting to replace the automatic ones to make this HDTV customized for almost any situation. This Sharp AQUOS has shown me that the LCD technology has the upper hand on the other HDTV technologies being offered.
