First Look: Apple's New and Improved 80GB iPod
iPod Video Enhanced 5th Generation 80GB Review, by Eric Dahl, PC World September 20, 2006
The 80GB model is the flagship of the revamped iPod line that Apple announced on September 12. Other new models are an enhanced 30GB hard-drive player at $249; new 2GB ($149, silver only), 4GB ($199), and 8GB ($249, black only) iPod Nanos in colorful iPod Mini-style aluminum cases; and a super-tiny new 1GB iPod Shuffle at $79.
Movies debut as well in the iTunes store built into iTunes 7, along with features such as automatic downloads of cover art, and a "cover flow" view of the iTunes library that lets you flip through albums as if you were examining a rack of CDs.
For music playback, not much has changed. The iPod remains an excellent MP3 player, and its sound quality continues to rank with the best around. The latest version adds gapless playback, eliminating the pauses between tracks on an album, and thereby permitting a smoother listening experience. In our lab tests, the iPod earned very good scores for audio quality, comparable to those received by Creative's Zen VisionM and Toshiba's Gigabeat S. I did notice a slight hiss when listening to the iPod through a pair of high-end Shure E500 PTH headphones, however.
Apple's familiar ClickWheel lets you navigate your music library with ease, scrolling through individual items and then through letters of the alphabet as you accelerate. A new search feature lets you scroll to select a few letters in order to pick out a song, artist, or album. With 80GB of storage on board--20GB more than most competitors (and the previous high-end iPod) muster--such features are welcome.
On Display
Apple claims that the 2.5-inch 320-by-240-pixel screen on the new iPods is 60 percent brighter than the screen that previous models used--and the new display does look great, on a par with the excellent screen on the Creative Zen VisionM. Videos were very watchable on the display, and they're easier to get. The new iTunes 7 features a movie store with an impressive array of releases available for $10 apiece, complementing its growing library of TV episodes. Most full-length features ran about 1.5GB. The title I tested (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl) looked very crisp for a 320-pixel production.
Games make an appearance on the iPod as well, with nine titles--including Tetris, Pac-Man, and Bejewled--available from the iTunes store for $5 each. Happy as ever to find yet another device to play Tetris on, I downloaded a copy and had a blast learning to line up blocks using the Click Wheel.
Unfortunately, iTunes 7 was battling its fair share of problems at press time. I experienced occasional crashes on both a PC and a Mac, and also was disappointed by the new album art search feature, which often failed to find art for releases that had valid links back to the iTunes store. That and the small but noticeable hiss I picked up were the new iPod's only blemishes.
Apple's latest iPod may cost a lot, but it boasts an upgraded screen and tons of storage.

Strengths: Incredible capacity (about 26 days of music at 265 kbps AAC-80 GB). Very creditable sound. Portability. Ease of use.
Weaknesses: No radio (add-on xtra costs $45).
Overall: While I'm sure the new iPod, soon to be released if you believe the rumors, will be even better, this might be the time to check the Apple store for refurbished 5th gen iPods. I have gotten so much use out of mine in ten months that my life has been positively better because of it. With a few freeware utilities available on the Internet, you can convert just about any kind of media file for use with it. A big fat A+.

Strengths: Great Battery Life, Video Playback, Perfect Size Screen, Love the Click Wheel, Headphone jack on Top.
Weaknesses: Overpriced, Slow Hard Drive, Freezes constantly
Overall: Ive had this wonderfull piece of machinery for about 2 weeks, and i think its the greatest thing. I have 13 Music Videos, 7513 Songs, and 10 Games. I also use it for contacts, and notes too! I love the new search feature. Out of 80 GB, i have approx 14GB left. Amazing that Apple thinks that no one could ever max out this one, but hey, you never know! Being my iPod has only 14GB left, my iPod CONSTANTLY FREEZES. This is so annyoing its not even funny. Be sure that you know how to reset your iPod if you are going to try to max it out. Just to let you all know heres how to do it> Switch the hold switch on to off about 3 times, and then hold the center button and menu button at the same time for about 10 seconds. The backlight will turn off temporarily and the apple logo will appear.

Strengths: The ability to play video (well), plenty of storage, big display.
Weaknesses: Inability to cope when battery runs low, lags and skips when hard drive runs, not very durable (so buy a case), may be harmful to older people's eyes when watching video.
Overall: Do not allow your ipod to completely run out of battery. Also, along with more storage requires more playlists and keeping track of everything you have (if you use Limewire or have an external download source besides iTunes).

Strengths: This is the most inovative product to come out in the recent tech boom.
Weaknesses: Can only load various media with itunes.
Overall: I am very impressed with the alien like technology that apple seems to continue to grace us with. This is not only extremely easy to use it has allowed me to leave my vulnerable cd collection at home. I would like to see a future version with a full sized touch screen like the iphone that is also blue tooth compatible.

Strengths: Great amount of storage. The screen works very well and is nice and bright. I like the ease of navigation through all of the music. Great reliablility and sound quality.
Weaknesses: As I have heard all iPods scratch rather easily. The scratches are pretty small so if you take care of it I don't think that they detract from the nice looks of the iPod.
Overall: I really enjoy using my iPod, I can just listen to it for hours on end. I listened to it for pretty much twelve hours non-stop and I still didn't even get half way through all of the songs I have on there. I bought an Alpine car stereo that connects to my iPod and it works great. I don't drive anywhere without my iPod. iTunes can take a little while to get used to, but it's some of the best software out there. I really like the Black look, it's very sleek. Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase.

Weaknesses: i have never bought something and then have to download off the internet, Im aguy too. I never read instruction manuals. But this time I did.if you are a newbie to the ipod store, it takes time.
Overall: I just want to make it understood, I dont write reviews on things.. But this has really impressed me.. plug it into your computer right away, charge it up. and your off and running... Very KOOL!! Shipping was quick too and easy.

Strengths: Lots of accessories available, looks cool, reliable.
Weaknesses: Apple music incompatability.
Overall: In order to be compatable with many other peoples ipod music playing devices, I have reluctantly joined the club. I was reluctant because I prefer the freedom of being able to download off any sight and not be limited to apple -- that is were podmax software comes in handy.

Overall: The Apple iPod 80GB Video is amazing. I've dreamed of having one since I've known about them and I was so glad on Christmas when I was thinking, I should go get an iPod. I got passed a gift and it was light I was like "cool" so i ripped it open and saw the Apple Packaging and am like, huh? Then I opened that and I saw the iPod box. I was amazed even by the box. I cannot believe how great my iPod works it's unbelievable! Thanks Apple! I suggest that everyone has one of these lol.
