This newcomer to the PDA phone scene has quickly become a top contender thanks to a bevy of features and a keyboard that's a pleasure to type on. Available from Cingular, this handset lacks high-speed HSDPA support (it does support EDGE) and has some interface quirks that take a little getting used to, but it's one of the most capable smart phones on the market.

Nokia E62
E62 Review, by Christopher Null January 2, 2007
As a phone, the E62 is on the quiet side, so your callers may be hard to hear. Dialing is easy, however, and the unit is comfortably light to hold. Talk-time battery life is excellent, reaching the 10-hour maximum that we test for.
The E62's roomy keyboard is its biggest draw: It's one of the most spacious arrangements I've ever seen on a candy-bar handset, with wide, flat keys that are beautifully sized and spaced. Setting up e-mail is a breeze, and sending and receiving messages are just as simple. The E62 handles attachments with aplomb, and its included office suite lets you edit documents easily. Though the included MP3 player is loud and clear, you'll want to use the bundled headset in lieu of the tinny internal speaker.
My few complaints center on features that the E62 lacks: It has no camera and no 3G service. The Symbian OS is surprisingly sluggish, too; I found myself hitting commands several times, thinking that the button presses hadn't registered, when in reality the E62 was just processing them slowly.
Otherwise, it's a stellar little device. Factor in its reasonable $200 price, and the E62 is a top contender-and number one on our chart.

Duration of ownership: 2 Months
Strengths: Excellent screen, battery life, phone, software and email
Weaknesses: Slow OS, silly placement of audio memo button
Overall: While not as cool as some other products I've owned, it is a solid phone, has great battery life and an awesome screen. The OS is simple to use and learn. Having no camera works well for me as i'm not allowed to bring one to work. Unfortunately, Cingular just killed it. Hopefully, they will replace it with another great nokia phone with all these biz features and no camera.

Strengths: Big screen Light
Weaknesses: Lillipucian letter ... now that is small ... users 45 and older may need a magnifying glass to read the text. The vendor could not and the manual did not provide instructions to increase the screen characters size. Synch software not user friendly as competitors
Overall: This looks and feel like a first time entry PDA Phone by a supplier. A lot of good ideas but just not the finish touch that a Blackberry or even Palm PDA phone has. We even found the software not as intuitive as that of Sony Ericson PC Suite who is not a strong contender in synch. to PC arena. Other well know brand names shine in comparaison. We bought the unit based on the review from PCWorld ... we will be returning it before the 30 day trial is over for competitive offering.

Strengths: Display, battery life, software suite, bluetooth
Weaknesses: No camera or WiFi, slow key response.
Overall: This is my first experience with Symbian OS. I found it to be very intuitive. Phone handles email well, with many options available for corporate clients. I synch Outlook and Mobipocket for news, etc. Weather easily available over a MediaNet connection anytime. As the web is available, and I get news daily from Mobipocket, the lack of WiFi is no problem. Especially as there is no subsequent battery drain. Great screen, and using SmartMovie and its converter, TV programming and video podcasts are a reality. Flawless synch execution without Intellisynch overhead. Does require Nokia PC Suite. Phone memory and MiniSD card show up in windows explorer when bluetooth and PC are enabled. Great Phone!

Strengths: Keyboard layout Price feel
Weaknesses: Not loud as the PalmOne Treo 680/650/700 OS is toooo sloooow No camera No wifi
Overall: In this better half of the new millenium, I see the need now for cameraphones, especially where there are more folks on the roads using their mobiles and accidents, nothing backs up or support any claims in an accident /police report by taking your pics and forwarding to your insurer. (should the Police Report be a biased one as I experienced a few years ago). I always go for the underdog... but my vote clearly is going for the PALMONE TREO 680... there are way too many tweaks and software and hardware accessories available and the OS is much faster.
