The Lexmark X5470 cuts some corners to achieve its exceptionally low $100 price tag (as of 10/25/06), but it still packs a remarkable set of features for the money. It has a 33.6-kilobits-per-second color fax capability and an automatic document feeder that can take ten pages at a time. The glass platen allows flatbed scans up to letter-size, but you can feed legal-size paper through the automatic document feeder.

Lexmark X5470
X5470 All-In-One Printer (25 PPM, 4800x1200 DPI, Color, PC/Mac) Review, by Paul Jasper December 20, 2006
The control panel lacks a color screen, instead sporting a less-expensive backlit two-line monochrome LCD. The buttons, which Lexmark has arranged logically enough around the LCD, include a numeric pad for fax dialing. The two media slots accept most digital camera memory cards, but you have no way to preview images without a color LCD. If you plan to work mostly from your PC, however, the lack of a color LCD is largely irrelevant. However, you can print a proof sheet, mark which images to print, and run it through the scanner. Image-enhancement options include red-eye removal and color effects. The PictBridge port lets you print directly from your digital camera. You can also print from a USB flash drive plugged into the PictBridge port; Lexmark doesn't offer a Bluetooth adapter.
The unit's single upright paper feeder at the rear holds up to 100 sheets. No paper-handling upgrades are available. Out of the box the X5470 uses four inks in two cartridges, including a pigment-based black ink for text printing. You can replace the black cartridge with one containing pigment-based light cyan, light magenta, and black inks for six-ink printing on photo paper.
In our print-quality tests using the standard cartridges, text printed darkly, but characters could have been crisper and we saw much horizontal banding. Line art suffered from fuzzy lines, gritty textures in closely spaced blocks, and some narrow banding. Photos that were printed with four inks on plain paper looked atrocious--a combination of overly visible dithering, fuzzy details, banding, and posterization effects. However, glossy photos that were printed using all six inks looked much better, if slightly grainy. They fell short of the best quality we saw from competing MFPs, though. Scan quality also was below par, but as a copier the X5470 did a decent job for an inkjet.
Against the stopwatch text printed relatively quickly, at 9.8 pages per minute. Plain-paper graphics arrived much more slowly, at 2.1 ppm; whereas on glossy letter-size paper, our sample photo trickled out in 94 seconds. A 100-dots-per-inch scan of our 4-by-5-inch test image emerged after a slow 10.2 seconds; photocopies averaged a tedious 1.9 ppm.
If you need a cheap combination of printer, scanner, fax, and copier for a home office in which speed and quality are of no concern, the Lexmark X5470 could be a good choice. But if you need to make a good impression, consider spending a little more money.

Duration of ownership: 5 Months
Strengths: Low price, prints OK
Weaknesses: Document feeder has never worked.
Overall: I am totally turned off with this printer/scanner and Lexmark service. The box promises 24 hour replacement if there is a problem, but the only way I can find to contact Lexmark is via email. I keep getting the same canned email response from them, so I don't think a human is looking at the messages. The document scanner has never worked - jams about half the time, when it doesn't jam the paper feeds at inconsistend speeds so the scan distorts. I'm going to try to take it back to the original retailer, but because I delayed contacting them, I may not get any results.

Strengths: Cheap, does everything you need for a multifunction printer, fast, quiet
Weaknesses: Doesn?t work too well with remanufactured ink cartridges. The Lexmark ink is expensive, but that is true for any inkjet printer.
Overall: I bought this last year and have been very satisfied with it. It prints fast and the ink will last a long time if you set the print quality to Quick instead of Normal. In fact, the ink cartridge that came with it lasted me about 6 months. It has a document feeder for scanning, which is really a nice feature considering how cheap the price is. You can make copies or send a fax without having to turn on the computer. The only problem that I ran into is when I tried to use a remanufactured ink cartridge in it. While it did recognize the new cartridge, I never could get decent quality out of it.

Strengths: Decent print quality, easy operation, nice design.
Weaknesses: Average photo quality, a bit slow on print output, expensive ink cartridges.
Overall: I've had this Lexmark unit for about three weeks now. Setup was smooth, but installing the Lexmark Imaging Studio software took a long time, about 15 minutes, on a Windows XP computer. The text and color graphics output of the printer is good, especially for the price. Photo quality is OK but nothing special. (This is using the supplied three color ink cartridge). There is a special photo cartridge (not included with the printer) that contains two additional colors and black, which I have not tried. The unit is styled nicely and is very easy to use with a computer, or as an independent copier/fax machine with the computer turned off. The control panel on the printer is easy to understand and the backlit LCD display guides you through most operations easily. This unit works well in a home, home office, or one or two person business. If you need to print one or two hundred pages a week this is fine. If your volume requirements are higher, you might want to look at a higher output unit. In the past all I have had are Epson printers. This is my first Lexmark. So far, I'm fairly impressed.

Strengths: Easy and intuitive software bundle
Weaknesses: Cheap plastic, starter ink, and only one color
Overall: I purchase this printer as part of a bundle of a notebook computer, who can get wrong with a free all in one after rebate. Well, works as it should be. The only problem is the ink, it prints very few and buying the color is almost half the price of the printer. Software was easy to load and use.

Strengths: X5470 is of decent design, easy set up and light of weight.
Weaknesses: None found so far.
Overall: the X5470 is a white and silver somewhat boxy mid-level four-in-one print center. Set up was very efficient and easy. The X5470 boots up in ten seconds or less and can print then as well. An automatic doc feeder is another bonus to the unit. The manual display controls have a clean metallic look. If you get this unit under $90 you have have a fine deal.

Strengths: Fast Copying and printing, great print quality and expandable for pictures.
Weaknesses: Too many phone cords required for faxing, very vague instruction for printer setup. Also installation disc for software included in the packaging is not compatiable with Windows Vista.
Overall: Recently my much older Compaq Persario crashed because my daughter downloaded a virus. So I was faced with having to buy a all new computer setup, including updating my printer. I decided on the Lexmark X5470, I liked the looks of it and the space saving functionality of an all in one design. I also like the fact that I can print photo when I am ready to purchase a digital camera. The only draw back of that feature is it must be a HP camera. The print & copying quality is excellent. Once you install the 101 phone cables you need to connect this with that and that with this it faxes sufficiently, but it could be faster. The only real complaint I have is the installation disc is not yet updated for Vista, so you have to download from the Lexmark website. Which takes much longer than the CD, other wise I am very satisfied with the overall performance.
