Like the first iteration of the iPod Nano, the 4GB second-generation Nano ($199 as of 1/9/07) is small. It weighs 1.4 ounces and measures roughly a quarter-inch thick--thin and light enough to be barely noticeable sitting in your shirt pocket. Its brushed metal case with rounded edges is arguably more stylish than the plastic case of the first-generation model.

iPod nano 2nd Generation 4GB MP3 Player - Blue (Internal Flash Drive, 24 Hours) Review, by Eric Butterfield January 22, 2007
Apple's signature scroll wheel has been shrunk to Nano-size proportions, but the wheel's smaller size doesn't impair navigation of the intuitive menus. The new Nano is better for viewing photos and video because it has a brighter screen than the first-generation model. Still, at just 1.5 inches, the screen isn't well suited for extended viewing.
What sets the Nano apart from its competitors is its high audio quality. In our tests, the Nano delivered great overall sound quality, earning a score of Superior. It reached the loudest level before reaching 1 percent distortion, and our test equipment measured a very high signal-to-noise ratio, meaning that the player introduces little hum or hiss into its audio. Also, its frequency response (how well it reproduced tones across an audio spectrum from 20 Hz to 20 kHz) was above the average. Though Apple's earbuds are better than those provided with many competing players, getting the most of the Nano's fidelity will require a better set. (Our tests measure the signal coming out of the headphone jack, not from the earbuds.) See a complete explanation of these tests.
Like other iPods, the Nano lacks some features that are common on competing players, such as a built-in microphone for voice recording, and an FM tuner. To make recordings, you'll need an optional dock or other accessory with a line-in jack because the Nano lacks one. The optional $49 iPod Radio Remote adds FM capability.
Because the headphone jack is located on the bottom of the player, you'll likely want to place the Nano upside-down in your pocket to avoid putting strain on the connection or cable. You can charge the player from your PC through the included USB cable. The Nano lasts an estimated 14 hours on a charge.
Of course, with the Nano you're locked into using Apple's iTunes software. Though iTunes is well integrated with the iTunes Music Store, this arrangement means you can't use a music subscription service such as Napster or Rhapsody. Nonetheless, if you consider these missing capabilities extras--as Apple apparently does--this fashionable player will deliver plenty to crow about, including great audio quality and a bright, high-resolution screen.

Strengths: small, slim, fits easily in a pocket
Weaknesses: easy to lose
Overall: Replacement gift for my teenage daughter since her other was mistakenly washed in the washing machine by me. She loved the red one she had before and really likes the new turquoise-blue one. She easily loads music from her CDs and PC. She was checking the mail everyday until it finally showed up.

Strengths: Total ease of use, tiny, with high power and high quality sound, driving even large earphones
Weaknesses: No video, even 4gb can run out if you get into it, batteries can't be replaced
Overall: This is the best consumer product I have ever purchased, intuitive, high quality, simple and effective. The scroll wheel sometimes lights up the display accidentally when I prefer darkness. Great item, though.

Strengths: classic design, thin and yet sturdy. long battery life.
Weaknesses: limited functions comparing to other MP3 players in the same price range
Overall: The 2nd generation is a classic that, I think, won't be surpassed by any other MP3 players, not even the newer 3g version. It's think and yet very sturdy. The construction is also flawless which not even Sony can compare. The battery life is so long that I don't even remember the last time I recharged it.Yet it has much fewer functions than other Mp3 players within the same price range, such as the Sansa e200 series. No FM tuner, no voice recorder, no video and so on. All you get in exchange is: it's an Ipod.

Strengths: * size* ease of use* color* sound* earbud sound
Weaknesses: * earbud size* storage capacity
Overall: When I first saw the blue nano online, I thought it was a bit too bright, but when I saw it in person, I was much more impressed with the color. Depending on the angle you view it, it's actually a deeper metallic blue, which looks great in my opinion.Aside from the look, the new earbuds do give a fuller sound, an improvement over the older style. The earbuds are great is you have smaller ears, because they will fit without hurting. However, if you're ears are bigger, they tend to fall out - you can remedy this by putting a set of earbud covers on (unfortunately, the new earbuds to no come with covers so you'll have to buy your own). The signature part of the ipod is how easy it is to use, and this nano follow suit - pretty much the same UI as previous ipods. Coming from a 15gig 3rd Gen ipod, the 4gig model is a little small on the storage size for me. However, that's not really a "problem" with the nano, it's more a matter of trading off the size with how many songs you can store. If you like to have your whole library with you at all times, you should probably look at the regular ipod. Finally, the integration with the nike+ipod sport kit was what sealed the deal for me. My wife uses it for her jogs and I have to say that the sport kits works wonderfully with the nano. Just make sure you have a good case to carry it in when you jog.

Strengths: Tiny and light, easy to carry, battery life, nice casing and lively color
Weaknesses: iTunes, proprietary USB connection, expensive, no wall charger
Overall: This is my first iPod and I am amazed with the iPod. I had this for about 2 months. There's nothing much to complain about the iPod nanos. Wish they included the wall charger with it.
