HP Photosmart D7160
Photosmart D7160 Inkjet Printer (32 PPM, 4800x1200 DPI, Color, 64MB, PC/Mac) Review, by Melissa Riofrio January 22, 2007
The control panel that manages all of these features is easy to use. Though the symbolic labels are harder to understand than words, the buttons are arranged logically. A helpful touch: Basic tasks are covered in the Quick Start Guide. The design includes conveniences like an input tray that slides out to make loading paper easier. The output tray, which extends from the top of the input tray, is usable but quite flimsy.
Many nice details help this printer stand out a bit from the pack. You can adjust the 2.4-inch LCD's angle to anywhere between 0 and 90 degrees for viewing comfort. Handles on the printer's sides make it easy to move. The impressively comprehensive paper User Guide is actually better than the HTML-based guide. An optional automatic duplexer for double-sided printing costs $80.
In our tests, the Photosmart D7160 produced capable speeds and generally good print quality. It managed a midrange text-printing speed of 7.5 pages per minute, and it was among the fastest models in our March 2007 issue roundup at printing graphics and photos. Though the printer is equipped with six inks--black, yellow, light cyan, cyan, light magenta, and magenta--plain-paper prints of text and images were merely adequate: text looked charcoal gray rather than black, though it was generally crisp; colors appeared washed out and very grainy. Glossy paper improved matters, yielding smoother images and more-natural-looking colors, though dark areas lost detail.
In a sea of inkjet competitors, the Photosmart D7160 stands out for its conveniences and its superior photo prints. Though some comparable printers may cost less or print a little faster, this would still be a good buy.

Duration of ownership: 5 Days
Strengths: Fast, economical
Weaknesses: Photo prints
Overall: I've been mesmerized by the number of HP printers - so much that I didn't even want to consider them. Finally, because I saw decent inital reviews of the D7160 (some reviews of which are confused in this review section with another printer), I got it. I however read some other reviews besides the vague one here at PC World which went into more depth. One lengthy review mentioned at the very end that the photo quality was disappointing and oversaturated. This is a major point to bring out in a *photo* printer; the writer treated it like a minor detail.

Strengths: easy install, fast printing, good looking, has a LCD, good price,
Weaknesses: not networking (or wireless) ready
Overall: The install is simple and easy on windows XP. The instruction is clear. No extra steps were needed. The printing is fast compared to my old printer. The LCD and blue lights on other buttons make it very nice looking. One nice feature is that when it is off and you print something from your computer, it will automatically turn on and start printing.I bought it with a good price after rebate. I wish it were networking (or wireless) ready. However, for that, you need to spend more on other models.

Strengths: Easy to setup and use. Fast text printing. Printing photos without using computer. Nice 2.4" image display screen. Very inexpensive price.
Weaknesses: None so far
Overall: This is a very versatile printer by Hewlett Packard. You can print regular size 8x11.5 as well as 4x6 in photos. In fact, you can print photo(s) without having to be connected to a PC. The photo quality is excellent for such an inexpensive printer plus you get to view your pictures before print on the 2.4 inch LCD pop-up screen. Document printing is fast and clear. I am extremely pleased with this purchase. It was well worth the price for such quality prints and the many features it can perform.
