Laplink PCmover for Windows Vista

Strengths: Simple to install, made the transition to a new PC a lot less work than I'd anticipated.

Weaknesses: Have to buy a new license every time you want to use the product - but then again you probably will only use it once every few years.

Overall: I bought this product last week after listening to a Computer Outlook radio broadcast that was really pushing PCmover. The host was raving about what a great job it did of moving applications from one PC to another - something I hadn't realised you could even do without uninstalling and reinstalling the software on the new machine. I used the software to move from my old PC (running Windows ME) to a new Dell Inspiron Notebook. All the programs transferred over - as did my emails and files. The only thing that failed to migrate were my son's iTunes - but I had expected that, seeing as they were digital rights protected. I sued the USB 1.1 cable that Laplink included, and the entire migration took just under 5 hours. (Time I didn't have to spend sitting in front of the PCs). Overall, a great product that did what it said.

Overall: PCMover is more like a virus than what it claims to be. It has infected two of our computers and both are now completely disabled. Only a Masochist should buy it. Only a Sadist should sell it.

Strengths: Easy to install

Weaknesses: DOES NOT move programs. None of the migration programs worked as the files were corrupted once migration was complete.

Overall: I never write up comments, but I'm super pissed off that I spent $69.99 on a product that doesn't do what it says it's supposed to do. Plenty of disclaimers through set up that alert you to this fact, and twice I shut down the installation of the software. I should have listened to my "gut" instinct, and taken this piece of crap software back to the store!Don't waste your money!

Strengths: I did move one program.

Weaknesses: The company says PC Mover is designed to be used one time.

Overall: When I tried to move another program from my old computer, PC Mover checked for and installed updates. Then asked for my serial number. I have never had a program ask for the serial number following an update! I couldn't find it so I called the company. After a run-around, they gave it to me. It would not work. I wasted two hours. This is expensive software for one use.

Weaknesses: Horrible. WILL NOT move any programs that require hardware ID, copyright protected programs, is buggy, and other programs that they don't even attempt to tell you about until after you buy it

Overall: BUYER BEWARE. They will not give a refund under any circumstances. This program was a complete waste of money and time, I spent HOURS and it never did what they advertise "Move all your programs" Even their fine print is a lie.

Overall: After the initial setup, the step by step directions walk you right through the PCmover process. The directions were easy to follow, and the old Windows 2000 machine worked to transfer all of its data to the new Windows XP SP3 machine. everything transferred to perfection, except for the McAfee virus software, which I then reinstalled on the new machine. The only complaint that I have is that the package I got had a USB transfer cable that was USB 1.1 compliant, so the transfer took longer than I thought that it should have.
