An artfully designed convertible Windows Tablet PC priced at $1894 (as of April 11, 2007), the 4.2-pound HP Pavilion tx1000 is geared for multimedia. This machine has some interesting and distinctive design touches, including a unique touchpad, but its abysmal battery life and excessively reflective screen make it a less-than-desirable traveling companion.

HP Pavilion tx1000
Pavilion tx1000 Review, by Carla Thornton April 22, 2007
Among the tx1000's many features are a built-in Webcam located at the top of the screen and a fingerprint reader set into the left side of the lid. It also comes with a three-in-one memory card reader, three USB 2.0 ports, and a dual-layer DVD writer. Indentations in the unique touchpad enable sensors to gauge your finger's movements. A scrollbar with similar perforations sits to the right of the touchpad.
All of the ports are conveniently laid out along the sides; and helpful, readily visible gray icons identify the connections so you don't have to hunt. Buttons for running HP's QuickPlay software (which lets you play DVDs or music without having to boot Windows) and for rotating the screen occupy the area just below the screen.
Converting from notebook to slate mode is easy, and the 12.1-inch screen rotates into place firmly. One quibble: The screen jiggles a bit when the tablet is in notebook mode and that can be distracting if you are moving--say, if you're on a train. The tablet comes with a responsive touch screen; but unfortunately the screen lacks an antireflective coating. In fact, strangely, it seems to have another kind of coating with a smoky hue that makes seeing anything on the screen at an indirect angle unduly difficult.
On WorldBench 6 Beta 2, the tx1000, equipped with a 2-GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60 processor and Windows Vista Premium Home Edition, managed a middling score of 64. In our battery tests, it ran down after just 1 hour, 45 minutes. Still, it's nicely designed and comfortable to use, despite the screen glare. Just be sure to pack the AC adapter.

Strengths: Great Graphics, Great Speed. Wonderfull as a tablet, and great as a notebook. Swivel screen is great on planes
Weaknesses: After prolonged use a pair of reading glasses come in handy
Overall: This little puppy has all of the functions and power of its big brothers and then adds light-weight, a fully functional tablet and direct play ability. I have travelled for years trying to find that perfect balance of having the horse power I need, and not dread lugging the unit throughout my travels along with all my other devices (mp3 player, DVD player etc.). I have finally found the answer in The HP tx1120us. I have had my unit for about two weeks and the sheen has not worn off, I am still finding new ways of incorporating all of the functions for differing situations. This sub-notebook is fully outfitted for serious work (web and graphics design, presentations, programming and the usual office functions) but it is also versatile in the various ways it accepts input, The swivel screen not only acts as a tablet with character recognition, but can also be used in conjunction with the full sized key board as a touch sensitive (using your finger) pointing device. This comes in very handy when the person in front of you reclines their airline seat, and speaking of input the metal touch pad feels so much better than the typical ones due to the lack of "stickiness" I was used to. I have loaded the unit up with Office 2007 Professional, Photoshop, GoLive, Visual Studio, Authorware, SQL and a hand full of games including Myst and have not been disappointed in the systems' ability to handle what I throw at it. The only additions I have added for hardware are extra battery and USB link to take advantage of the G3 tethered connection to my mobile phone. I can't say enough about having found my ideal travel companion. And one that fits in a messenger bag along with all of my cables, thumb drives, DVDs, papers, portable drives, phone, sunglasses...... at a price that was well below what other similar but less versatile machines are selling for. Oh and did I mention the design looks pretty cool to !

Strengths: Price, size, tablet option, nice design, camera, fingerprint reader, performs well, built in almost everything you need.
Weaknesses: 1GB RAM which I suspect fills the available space so upgrading to 2GB is not as cheap as it might be, especially since it uses shared memory for the video. Very warm (but not hot). Display does not cope well with sunshine.
Overall: Contrary to the review, it does have a stylus and a place to keep it. It also has a neat little remote control that can be stashed in the PC Card socket. The stock HP version only has 512MB RAM, so if that was the version tested, it may explain the performance issues. I got mine from Sams Club at $1250 and it has 1GB RAM and seems to perform fine with Vista. I actually bought it for my wife and she loves it. Being able to use it in tablet format makes it very convenient. Removing the DVD Drive makes it lighter as well although this is not always practical. The battery life seems fine and there is an extended battery available, but that tends to conflict with the ultraportable aspect of this machine. Overall, I would strongly suggest this for sitting on the sofa browsing the web etc. It will do anything you need it to do apart from the latest games, but it's too small for that anyway.

Strengths: Portable, stylish, light, touchscreen option, has many neat functions, remote control, fingerprint reader, webcam.
Weaknesses: Gets extremely hot, grainy screen (w/ touchscreen option), fingerprints get on the glossy cover, doesn't show how long the battery life has left.
Overall: Overall, I would recommend this laptop to people who want a small and portable laptop. It is very fun and stylish. The thing I really like about this laptop is that it has a lot of functions. It also comes with a remote control that allows you to change music when you are a distance away from the computer. This laptop makes a really nice laptop for college users or people who travel a lot.One of the things that really bug me is the grainy screen. It's not as clear as a true life screen because of the extra coating for the touchscreen option. Sometimes it makes it hard for me to read the screen in areas that aren't perfectly lit.Overall, I think those who buy it will probably love it after using it for a few days.

Strengths: very portable, small, lightweight machine, this will work perfectly as a laptop.
Weaknesses: The screen is not very sensitive to pen-based input.
Overall: In summary, this laptop is a stellar performance for everyday computing and the extra touch that this laptop offers to the everyday monotonous usage, makes it a worthy contender. Not to forget , the price tag at which it comes. For all those people who are looking for professional usage please look somewhere else as it might fall much short of expectation , but for everyday usage its worth your bet.

Strengths: Small form factor, touch screen, lightweight
Weaknesses: hot
Overall: This tablet PC is not perfect, obviously. However the deficiencies are justified by the cheap price: you get a little bit more than you paid. It's a tablet PC, but not equipped with a Wacom digitizer, instead a pocket pc-like touch screen is available, which is sufficient for non-professional use, though you may need to press a little harder to make it work. The unit is well made, but the use of AMD processor makes it running hot. And it's the most significant weak point as far as I can see. Overall, a nice starter tablet PC for the price.

Strengths: Just under 4 Lbs, ultraportable, lightweight, convertible LCD, sleek design
Weaknesses: battery life is ok
Overall: I have this notebook for about 6 month. It is elegent and sleek. It does great jobs for web-surfing, movie watching and microsoft office. It is so ultraportable that I carry it in my backpack everywhere. Also it is very affordable 12" notebook relative to sony, dell and toshiba.

Strengths: Small size, foldable Tablet screen, catchy design
Weaknesses: The touch screen pen can not distinguish low or high pressure, and change line thickness. Cover need to hands to open.
Overall: Very good machine for the price. I bought it for my daughter for graduation. I ordered this machine with touch screen, 2G memory and 1.6GHz dual AMD processor with 1 M cash.12" wide screen is very handy size for student. Machine is not heavy, and looks great with black glossy cover and silver accent. The touch screen can not distinguish low or high pen pressure, so it is not good for graphic art. But very useful for text entry if you browse internet when used as a tablet. Handwriting recognition is very impressive, if you writing whole words. It is much better then individual letters recognition. So far my daughter ~25% of a time use it as a tablet. It has very handy entertainment features, like DVD fast play, DVD controls on the edge of the screen, retractable remote - all accessible when tabled folded flat with screen out. The speakers quiet impressive and loud, located at the bottom of the screen, and facing out even if the screen is folded flat. Comes loaded with DVD player, Roxio DVD writer. No complains on response speed.Image details on the screen are very fine, although contrast would be higher.I had a good experience with HP customer support, with this laptop and other HP staff I have. They responded fast and were in help for my Vista related questions.
