Cell phones with multimedia capabilities generally struggle to balance the needs of a conventional handset and those of a music or video player. Samsung's UpStage responds to this problem by putting phone functions on one side of the device and multimedia functions on the other. This candy bar-style handset, offered by Sprint Nextel for $150 with a two-year contract, is less than 0.5 inch thick and not much larger than an iPod Nano.

Samsung UpStage (M620)
Samsung UpStage M620 Review, by Yardena Arar May 16, 2007
The phone side of the UpStage has a very thin 1.4-inch color screen, a directional switch, and the usual soft keys for navigating menus, all topping a conventional phone keypad. The phone felt small but solid in my hand; I found its keypad quite usable, and the sound quality of voice calls was generally good. The multimedia side of the device accommodates a 2.1-inch display and a four-way capacitive touchpad whose central, mechanical play button took some getting used to. The excellent documentation warns users not to try to swipe it in a circle (like an iPod control wheel), but the temptation is strong.
A small Flip button on the unit's edge lets you toggle between the two sides, but the prompt to confirm that you want to stop playing music and start making a phone call gets old fast. (The phone halts music playback during incoming calls; the music resumes once you disengage the call.)
Unfortunately, whenever you have to input text while using the multimedia side--say, while browsing the Web--you must flip to the phone side. The device does present 'Flip' as a soft-key option, but the process is still tedious.
The Sprint Music Store (which now charges 99 cents for over-the-air purchases of music tracks) is prominently featured when you flip to the music side. You also get a PC Sync button for transferring music from your desktop to a MicroSD Card in the UpStage (the phone has a 64MB card, and it can support up to 2GB). Before using it, you must install the Sprint Music Manager desktop application on your PC and connect the phone using the included USB cable. The Sprint app is no Windows Media Player or iTunes killer, but it's serviceable enough. You can create playlists on the phone. I appreciated Sprint's decision to substitute an earphone adapter (complete with a microphone) for the mediocre-quality earbuds that come with most music phones.
The UpStage's flip case comes with a battery wallet--an innovative embedded battery that recharges along with the phone when you store the phone in the case. When it's charged, the wallet serves as an extended battery, considerably prolonging the handset's life between charges. In our tests, parking the phone in the wallet yielded a very good talk-time battery life of 7 hours, 43 minutes.
The UpStage also includes Bluetooth (for linking to a headset or for using the phone as a PC modem), a 1.3-megapixel camera capable of capturing 30-second MPEG-4 videos. It bundles Sprint TV, too, providing access to free and for-a-fee video clips as well as support for subscribing to and listening to mobile podcasts via VoiceIndigo's free mobile service.
For video viewing, the UpStage's screen is small, and the device falls short as a serious device for messaging or e-mail due to its lack of a QWERTY keyboard. But if you're a music lover who isn't especially keen about video, e-mail, or messaging, Samsung's approach might upstage Apple's iPhone--and its price certainly does.

Duration of ownership: 2 Months
Strengths: Great signal strength MP3 Small & light Able to text while in roaming my old phone didn't do that.
Weaknesses: Flipping can be annoying but u get used to it. the scroll thing is sometimes a prob if u use it alot.
Overall: I really love this phone, i think i went to a small town and i had a thought i have the most advance phone in this town I like the fact that its small and can fit into your pocket easy. Also love the fact when im at work i can easly text without anyone seen that i am and fast. The mp3 player is sweet sucked only got the 64mb chip but still ws good but i went and bought the 1GB and loved even more. I was amazed that you actually had about 100MB of memory size with the phone, and the extendanded battery is awesome but looks funny when u talk on it. I do recommend this phone. Its not expensive and i find it resonable price for all what you can do on the phone. It does suck thow that you dont get software to do your contacts etc thow but paying 2.00 isn't bad but still i have a high bill as it is. but anyways yes GREAT PHONE like everything else it has its flaws but some flaws can be worked around.

Strengths: MP3 and Digital Camera
Weaknesses: Headset, Flipping the phone a lot
Overall: I love this product find it useful for more then just a phone on long commutes from my apartment in NYC to work. Granted not many MP3 could fit on the phone as sold to me but still a great product.

Strengths: MP3 player and phone in 1 very small package. Bright Displays on both sides.
Weaknesses: you'll do more "flips" than a three ring circus. Camera 6 of 10.
Overall: I just sold my pocket PC-6700 to get this and I also use a RAZR and this phone kicks both of their butts!! When you are rollerblading, gopeding or bike riding and you want to listen to music and can't miss that special call this is it! Also comes with nice little carry case/external battery pack for extended listening or emergency back up battery. Graphics for both screens are easy to read and colorful. Camera only useful if CNN has no other phones to hire...not recommended for photography class. ALL IN ALL...I'd buy another without a doubt!

Strengths: price, features
Weaknesses: schizophrenic interface
Overall: Using the Samsung M620 Upstage is like trying to have a one on one conversation with a pair of schizophrenic Siamese twins. The concept seems pretty smart. Use the back of the phone as a secondary screen, and I?m sure the engineers thought it was pretty clever too. But the reality of the situation is, you are constantly needing to flip back and forth. The keyboard on one side, and the actual screen to do anything other than telephone someone is on the other side. This phone is a Jack of trades, but a master of none (except maybe telephoning someone). The camera and video phone won?t win any awards for best Cinematography,Typing in text can be done, but an automobile can also be driven using nothing but your feet, however Its not recommended. So far their doesn?t seem to be any interface software for the PC so one can type in phone contacts ,etc via the PC. The USB cable only seems to be useful for the user to download music, but seems very useful for Sprint Inc. to try and sell you just about every good and service under the sun at every juncture. The streaming TV is pretty good, no complaints there except you have to pay more for TV on a 2 inch screen than you do for TV at home on a 50 inch screen with digital surround. If I had it to do over, I believe I would look at a Palm, or some other blackberry type phone and leave this one alone until they come up with a computer interface and a firmware upgrade.
