BitDefender Antivirus 10 nearly took top honors in "Virus Stoppers," our eight-program antivirus roundup. It did an excellent job of detecting malware, with a 96 percent catch rate. It also ranked second in our proactive detection tests (behind Eset's NOD32) using one-month-old signature files, nabbing 61 percent of new malware samples. And at $30, with a $22 renewal fee, it's one of the least-expensive programs we tested.

Slow performance in Vista
BitDefender Antivirus 10
Antivirus v10 Review, by Ryan Naraine April 23, 2007
The program was badly hamstrung by serious slowdowns in our WorldBench 6 Beta 2 application performance tests on Windows Vista Ultimate, however. One Firefox test, for example, which loads a large number of different Web pages, took three times longer with BitDefender than with any other program we tested. The slowdown wasn't debilitating, but it was noticeable. The company says the problem is a known bug in the Vista version that will be fixed in a future program update.
Though it excelled at malware detection, BitDefender was less adept at disinfection. It successfully cleaned just 13 out of 22 items, missing one malware file and both changes to the network settings Hosts file.
BitDefender also had the highest false-positive rate, incorrectly labeling 14 harmless files (out of 20,000) as malware.
On the plus side, BitDefender has a well-designed interface. A slider bar in the main window provides an easy way to modify levels of security protection, and clearly marked icons let you launch full scans and set up custom scans. BitDefender was also the only product to offer free 24/7 phone support, with easy-to-find phone numbers and support e-mail addresses listed in the "Help" section of the application.
By default, the program runs a full-system scan daily. It scans e-mail traffic on the POP3 and SMTP protocols and integrates nicely with Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, and Windows Mail (on Vista) for antispam filtering. BitDefender has a basic level of instant messaging protection, but unfortunately it doesn't scan HTTP traffic by default to identify Web-borne threats--you'll need to turn on that capability yourself.
A useful "privacy guard" feature detects when personal information--such as a credit card or Social Security number--is being stolen from a computer, without your having to first tell it what those numbers are. BitDefender was one of the only two programs we tested that automatically disabled Vista's built-in Windows Defender antispyware utility, however. Symantec Norton AntiVirus 2007 was the other.
We tested the Vista version of BitDefender Antivirus 10 for our "Virus Stoppers" roundup. An XP version of the software is also available.

Strengths: Excellent Virus detection & protection from malware.
Weaknesses: Not detected yet
Overall: I am using Bitdefender Total Security 2008 Version 11.X.XX for two & half months now. I think it is one of the best Total Security software at this time. It has an excellent update interface & also we don;t have to restart our system. It automatically downloads & installs updates. I am using Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit version on an Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz., 2 GB RAM, SATA 160 GB. I don;t see any slowdown of system due to Bitdefender. One of my friend is using it on Windows Xp SP2 & it works fine on that too. I think Bitdefender Total Security 2008 is the best antivirus, antimalaware solution right now.

Strengths: - Good detection - Live chat support - They work on sundays! - Instant ( well almost ) redressal of issues of viruses
Weaknesses: - Update problems - Interferes with Windows Update - A little system heavy on Vista
Overall: I use the Bit Defender Antivirus Plus 10 ( AntiVirus+Firewall+AntiSpam+Anti-Spyware ). The program works amazing. I got two licenses for US$ 49 for two years. The licenes are on subscription basis and if you own them, you get a free upgrade to the next version of the prog too! Not like other AV's where you buy the AV version and only renew your definitions subscription and where subscriptions are only allowed to limited updates of that version only. Here, you subscribe for their service. Also, recently I'd faced a virus problem on a Sunday and the tech support was quick enough to reply to me the same day in like an hours time. Great product, even better support. Go for it!

Overall: A good, solid program with good support that has ran well for three years. I recommend it highly.

Strengths: As per the article, nicely laid out interface , and user friendly. Has had consistently good reviews, and has yet to let me down.
Weaknesses: Also, as per the article, can sometimes have disinfection issues, and at times, have had to take care of it myself manually. (from the scan information)
Overall: For a novice like myself, it's the most intuitive AV software I've used. Is it "perfect", no, but then what is ? For me, it's still the one to beat, before I'd make a change.

Strengths: Lighter on resources than most competitor products, good at catching viruses
Weaknesses: None experienced (Apparently some potential software conflict problems for some people.)
Overall: If you are looking for a solid AV product, BitDefender should definitely be toward the top of your list. It is good at finding bugs in your system and is much lighter on system resources than most of its competitors. While BitDefender is not as well known as many of big name competitors (Norton, McAfee, CA, etc.) it tends to be a better product over all. It is in a similar league as Kaspersky AV -- another lesser-known product that is simply good at what it does.

Strengths: - updates itself hourly, and free support. BOOTABLE CD is definately a plus!!!
Weaknesses: Firewall would have been nice.
Overall: Overall, I was pleased with this product. It works with Vista. It was very easy to install, and even a beginner would do well with this. The 2-year protection is good, too. Most just give you 1 year.
