For people who appreciate finer laptop accoutrements such as a backlit keyboard and a slot-fed DVD drive, Apple has crafted another tasty offering in the form of the 17-inch MacBook Pro. Sleek, powerful, and able to run Windows as well as the Mac operating system, the MacBook Pro makes a strong case for becoming anyone's ultimate notebook.

Apple MacBook Pro
MacBook Pro Review, by Carla Thornton July 25, 2007
Equipped with a 2.4-GHz Core 2 Duo T7700 processor, the maximum 4GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and nVidia's new top-of-the-line notebook graphics card, the nVidia GeForce 8600M GT, our $2949 test unit set new speed records (through 10/25/2007). The MacBook Pro outperformed the rest of the notebooks we tested, all of which claim Windows as their primary--nay, their only--operating system. We loaded Windows Vista Home Premium on the Apple notebook, and it snagged a WorldBench 6 Beta 2 score of 88. In games it achieved a blazing frame rate of 141 frames per second in Far Cry (with antialiasing turned off).
At 6.6 pounds and just 1 inch thick, the MacBook Pro is the lightest 17-inch notebook available. But it has no memory card slots and only three USB ports, and it comes configured with an ExpressCard/34 slot instead of the more versatile ExpressCard/54 slot. Though it has Bluetooth and 802.11n Wi-Fi, built-in cellular broadband is not an option. On the other hand, video editors will be happy to have not one but two FireWire ports. Battery life was disappointing: Apple pegs it at 5.7 hours on one charge, but in our tests we got less than 2 hours, 45 minutes.
Nevertheless, the MacBook Pro is elegantly designed and remarkably mobile for a 17-inch notebook.
Carla Thornton
Correction: The MacBook Pro's reign as fastest notebook ended on 10/25/2007, not 11/23/2007 as was previously reported. We apologize for the error.

Strengths: A superb light weight laptop that is pleasure to use. Very powerful, I run Crysis, Half life and Bio shock at great frame rates through boot camp. Fast, light, back lit keyboard is great for me, screen is fantastic I have two of these the same spec except one is glossy and the other matte.
Weaknesses: If anything that they did not introduce high res screen option previously my one other compliant is the region locking by the OS.
Overall: This is now my 20th pro apple laptop I have been buying and upgrading al the way back from my 12, 15 and 17" Powerbooks right to my first 1.83MBP. I love the machines, I prefer them to my sony vaio, for ease of use and just sheer reliability. I have the 17" 2.6C2D, with HIgh Res 2 gigs of ram and a 720rpm 200gb hard drive and the machine just leaves my other laptops behind.

Strengths: Display is so great, bright and contrast is awesome. Display can adjust the brightness depends on lights too. Performance is fantastic, the fastest laptop i ever know (which is not all laptops i know). Firewire port, illuminated keyboard, magnetic adapters, the trackpad, the sound, all is great. The design is unmatchable, simple and elegant
Weaknesses: Optical drive always frustating me. It can't read many CD or DVDs, and failed when burning. The temperature is cooking me out. sometimes make me worry about the components inside. the webcam is bad. if my CD/DVD stuck, i can't get it out by force. Always a lot of pray, with push eject button and type drutil thingy in terminal
Overall: Performance is great, very comfortable on any situation. Have a sleek and stunning design, but also powerful. It's a great Notebook

Strengths: Sleek design, totally awesome operating system (Leopard) and speedy processing. Doesn't overheat. Love the Time Machine and Dashboard features.
Weaknesses: Any 17" laptop is kinda heavy.
Overall: Very impressive little machine! I was a little worried about the computer heating up because of blogs/reviews I'd read. Apparently Apple has taken care of this issue, because my MacBook Pro maintains a very comfortable temperature. As stated above, the speed of the processor (along with the 4 gigs of RAM I had installed), Leopard OS, and the elegance of the entire Apple interface - ROCK! It's all the nice little amenities that Apple includes that make this laptop the one I love.

Strengths: Thinner than most laptops with these features. Lightweight. Great Display. Firewire 800. Great Upgraded Graphics Card. Built In Camera. Remote. Small powerbrick. Santa Rosa chipset. Great Battery life
Weaknesses: Still gets REALLY hot. Some people have reported problems with their screens.
Overall: This is my second MacBook Pro. I've owned the 2.33 and bought the 2.4 because we love these laptops. The SantaRosa chipset was supposed to provide cooler temps but the temps are still high. The iSight camera was reduced in size but is now 1.3 megapixels (You won't be able to take a highres snap will Leopard though). 802.11n is now standard and works great. Max memory has been increased to 4gb but the standard config is 2x1gb SODIMMs instead of the better option of a single 2GB SODIMM. The instructions to upgrade your ram are included in the manuals so use pricegrabber.com to buy yourself some cheaper (compared to Apple) ram. Now for the two big selling points. First you can now get a 'Hi-Res' screen which will allow you to run a 1920*1200 pixels. With Leopard being resolution independent it'll look even better. The second point is the upgraded video card. Apple ditched ATI and went for an Nvidia 8600M GT. We play games using Bootcamp 1.3 with Windows XP and can run C&C3 with ALL the eye candy on at 1680*1050 and it runs amazingly good. This is a great machine it has a tendency to heat up... a lot so make sure you don't plop it on top of a pillow... buy one of those laptop cooling trays.
