In the ThinkPad X61, Lenovo has introduced its successor to the ThinkPad X60. The X61 uses Intel's Santa Rosa mobile processor. Otherwise, it's the same light, sophisticated ultraportable as the earlier model; like the X60, it lacks an integrated optical drive but offers dazzling battery life.

Lenovo ThinkPad X61
X61 Review, by Carla Thornton August 28, 2007
This 3.6-pound X-series member goes to the top of our list of ultraportables for mobile professionals. Our X61 test unit, with a 2-GHz Core 2 Duo T7300 processor and 2GB of DDR2-667 SDRAM, earned a WorldBench 6 Beta 2 score of 75, which is tops among currently tested ultraportables. The extended-life four-cell battery lasted an amazing 6 hours and 14 minutes.
The bright, 12.1-inch screen and the keyboard might feel a bit close at first, but the cramped feeling quickly goes away. The keyboard has no touchpad, but the eraserhead pointing device is first-rate and easy to acclimate to. The usual nice touches found on Lenovo keyboards, such as volume buttons and a one-press launch of the recovery system, are also present.
The UltraBase docking station adds four more USB ports (for a total of seven) as well as legacy parallel and serial ports. In addition, the modular optical drive has a side release, so you can swap with one hand between an optical drive, a second battery, or a second hard drive (those are optional accessories). Including the base, which is easy to snap on and off, the unit's total weight is a little over 6 pounds.
Our review unit, which included an UltraBase docking station with a dual-layer DVD burner, costs $1724 (as of July 27, 2007). The great performance and features, and its reasonable price, make the X61 our current top choice of ultraportable.

Duration of ownership: 3 Months
Strengths: Light weight, Fast, Available options, Battery Life, Worldwide Warranty Available, Good Customer Service.
Weaknesses: Graphics, itâs not made for gaming. So donât buy it if youâre into gaming, but excellent for everything else.
Overall: Buy online so you can configure this laptop for your needs, I did and Iâm very happy with what I got. So many options to choose from the best is itâs ultrabase which allows you to add an extra HDD, DVD drive or extended life battery. Lots of USB ports (the laptop itself has three and with the ultrabase adds an extra four) , Bluetooth (optional), wireless a/g/n, fast 7200 rpm HDD (optional available as well as a HDD encryption good for those Government workers that like to loose their laptops), With my laptop configure with the fastest available CPU Core 2 Duo 2.2 Ghz, 3 GB memory, 200 GB 7200rpm HDD, MS Vista Business, Ultrabase with HDD Adaptor and DVD Drive, 8 Cell Battery, Intel Wireless A/G/N, Bluetooth, carrying case, A/C adaptor all under $2000.00. Lenovo always have sales every month on their laptops. Oh, the customer service was excellent for someone living outside the US. All other brands donât even give warranty service outside the US (other brands would say they are a world leader in PC sales but will not service their products if sold outside the US.) Lenovo/IBM will service all the PCs/Laptops they sale worldwide. Service after the sale is always important!

Strengths: small, light
Weaknesses: dead pixels on screen
Overall: You will likely receive a laptop with dead pixels. Lenovo will not replace or repair it as its policy allow 5 defective pixels. Very poor customer service.

Strengths: Nice piece of hardware
Weaknesses: Lenovo Customer Service ranks at the very bottom.
Overall: I have been a user of Tablet PCs since their introduction, and have used several units from several manufacturers. While I've had a couple of problems here and there, the manufacturers have always resolved them. A few months ago, I purchased a totally loaded Lenovo X61 Table PC. While I really like this unit, I've had a few problems. But most importantly, my customer service experience with Lenovo has been nothing short of a nightmare. So while this may be a decent piece of hardware, I have been going out of my way to warn my customers that horrible customer service equals an unacceptably costly value proposition. There are a lot of good products in the marketplace. Go find a good a conmpany who really values customer service - Lenovo does not rank among those companies who care.

Strengths: small
Weaknesses: poor quality and support, crashes all the time
Overall: If you want to buy this notebook, you should be aware that Lenovo might send you a notebook with a defective LCD screen (dead or stuck pixels). There can be up to eight of them on your brand new LCD screen, and Lenovo will argue that this is not a defective screen. They will not repair it, they will not take back the laptop. If you want to send the laptop back, because you are unhappy about these green, white or red dots starring at you from the middle of the screen, they will charge you 15% restocking fee (280$ in my case!). This is to ensure that you will not return Lenovos cheap joke of a thinkpad. If you are into Russian roulette buy this notebook, maybe it arrives without defects, maybe not. In the latter case you will have to live with it, since their is no support. Good luck !

Strengths: The Lenovo X61 is a well built unit. It is fast, portable, and has excellent wireless mobility features. The only thing it lacks is a DVD drive. I purchased the docking bay and DVD burner for under $300 at Amazon. I also recommend installing Windows XP until a service pack comes out for Vista.
Weaknesses: DVD drive is not integrated. But, a docking bay with DVD drive can be bought separately for about $300.
Overall: If you do not mind not having a DVD drive, than it is an excellent unit.

Strengths: Fast..great graphics. Also very light & portable. Battery life on 8-cell battery is excellent
Weaknesses: slow to boot up even with the option of Intel turbo memory. Speaker not very loud or clear, it's located under the laptop.
Overall: Excellent business tablet. Fast, portable & great battery life make this an excellent tablet. Graphics will even do well with gaming as long as you dont care about the sound.

Strengths: high-end configuration
Weaknesses: LCD could be better.
Overall: Basically this machine has everything you could think of. A fast 2GHz CPU, 2GB memory, 160GB hard drive, and the dvd writer option. It's business-customer oriented so the vista business is sufficient. One thing that would have made the machine perfect is a better LCD screen. The current one has poor viewing angle.
