Canon's Pixma MP470 has its quirks, but given the $100 price (as of 9/12/07) it's hard to complain. This compact machine offers a wide range of print, copy, and scan functions in a decently designed package.

Canon Pixma MP470
Pixma MP470 Review, by Melissa Riofrio September 24, 2007
Setup is easy, thanks to the inclusion of a poster illustrating basic steps and an automatic installation routine using the included CD. The software bundle includes a pair of useful, well-designed applications for editing photos and handling scanned images. Canon's Solution Menu dialog box gives you one-touch access to the printer's on-screen documentation, maintenance utilities, and help files. A My Printer applet installs itself in your Windows system tray and provides the printer queue, settings, and troubleshooting info. A quick-start guide and an HTML-based manual cover all the features thoroughly.
The Pixma MP470 performed satisfactorily in our tests. It processed plain-text pages at a competent 8.7 pages per minute (ppm). The deeply black, slightly fuzzy text was certainly readable, although curvy fonts looked feathery and closely spaced type seemed mushy. Graphics took longer to print--1.5 ppm to 4 ppm, about average overall--and looked decent on plain paper (short on detail, a little faded) but great on costlier Canon paper (bright, crisp). The device scans and copies quickly, and the copies in particular looked quite good. Ink cost per page (at 5 percent coverage per color) is reasonable: about 5 cents for black-only, or 29 cents for a page with all three colors plus black.
The Pixma MP470's sleek, black-and-silver cabinet exhibits an attention to external design that fails to extend to all of the components contained within. The input and output trays, which unfold for use, rattle a lot and bend easily. Shallow slots leading toward the cartridge bays do nothing to help you position a new cartridge correctly for insertion.
The control panel nestles discreetly in the top-right corner of the machine. Flip up a small panel, and you'll find a 1.8-inch LCD on the underside and an array of buttons on the panel beneath it. To Canon's credit, the buttons are clearly labeled and sensibly arranged. Major functions like scanning and copying get their own, distinctively marked buttons; their plentiful options appear on the LCD. The directional buttons for navigating these features, however, are so narrow that they're hard to press--and it's hard to tell whether you've actually pressed any of the buttons because they are set too shallow to provide adequate feedback.
The photo features on the MP470 are good for the price. Two media slots sit behind a little door on the front panel; they take CompactFlash, Memory Stick, SD Card, SmartMedia, and xD-Picture Card. Insert a card and press the 'Memory Card' button on the control panel, and you can view photos on the LCD, print directly from the card, and more.
The Pixma MP470's design shortcomings should be easy for many people to forgive, considering everything the MFP offers for the price. Its print, scan, and copy functions are sound, and its software gives you lots of options.

Strengths: Affordable at-home printer!!
Weaknesses: None so far!!
Overall: I would highly recommend this printer for someone who needs a all-in-one printer at a affordable price. Color is excellent for a inkjet printer. So far I have no problem with it. This printer is very reliable.

Strengths: Fast printing compared to other inkjets.
Weaknesses: As many other users have reported, there is a significant issue with the paper feeding mechanism. It either won't feed, or pulls-in the paper at an angle, and then jams.
Overall: If you can get this printer for under $65 dollars, it may be worth dealing with the paper feeding issue. But otherwise, I would not recommend it. Certain stores are really starting to mark down the price of this printer as I suspect that they are getting a lot of them 'returned' due to the paper feeding issue I described.

Strengths: Budget Printer. Easy Installation and operation.
Weaknesses: Not a great Photo printer
Overall: I bought this for home use. Quite a decent printer considering the price. Not a great photo printer, if you are mainly looking for great quality photos. The scanner is quite good. Overall its a nice budget All In One Printer for moderate home use.

Strengths: High resolution scanning, excellent print quality (text and documents)
Weaknesses: Scanner bed is embedded (not flush with top of printer), ink catridges don't look like they carry much ink
Overall: I got this multi-function inkjet printer a while back but let it sit around in its box for a while. Finally got around to opening it. Too bad I waited so long because this thing is pretty useful. First, the features: inkjet printer, flatbed scanner, copier. It has an LCD status screen, card reader and pictbridge for direct digicam connection (for digital cameras that support pictbridge). So far, I've printed some documents and the text is so fine that it looks like it came off my laser printer. The scanner and scanning software are easy to use and supports scanning resolutions of about twice the resolutions of most other multifunction devices. However, I did have a problem scanning a document I had filled out using B&W document scanning mode: the handwritten blue ink and thin form lines of the document I was scanning did not go through well. Switching to picture mode made for better results there. The flatbed itslef is embedded a little bit from the surface of the printer around it. This is no big deal for regular sized documents, but it is not possible to get oversized items flush with the glass. As a result, it is either difficult or impossible to scan larger things or sometimes they come out very blurry and out of focus. The black ink cartridge is average sized. However, the color cartridge is very small, and this one very small cartridge holds all the colors. Seems this printer is more for printing documents than photos, as this color cartridge doesn't look like it can print a whole lot before needing replacement. It doesn't come with fax capabilities. Instead, I scan the documents to computer and then use my computer's fax modem to send faxes. Like most printers these days, it does not come with a USB cable for connecting it to your PC. Despite all these shortcomings, I still like this MFP.
