Vimeo Review

by Danny Allen

More family-oriented than some other sites, Vimeo has a simple interface, an easy uploader, and the option to let viewers download your original file (up to 250MB).

Vimeo (an anagram of the word movie) has been a family-safe, private-video focused alternative to YouTube since 2004. The site has a charming, easy-to-grasp interface and a sleekly designed, yet customizable embeddable player (you can even choose to have your profile picture superimposed over the video before a viewer clicks play).

Vimeo used to restrict users to 20MB uploads, but you can now upload videos up to 250MB in size (250MB is also the weekly upload limit, but that can be spread over as many videos as you like).

Our test file looked a little dark after Vimeo's Flash 8 conversion, but the site gets high praise for letting you allow viewers to download the original file that you uploaded. We also liked the ability to add Flickr photos to a profile page.

Vimeo's browser-based uploader was dead simple to use, and we were also given the option of choosing a thumbnail to represent our video.

Bottom line: Easy-to-use Vimeo lets you make your original file--sized up to 250MB--available for download along with a streaming Flash version. Unfortunately, 250MB is also your weekly upload limit.
