The Toshiba Satellite A215-S4757 is the first Toshiba laptop with an AMD processor instead of an Intel one. It has heaps of features, including a 250GB hard drive, but its performance could be better.

Pros
Very affordable
Full-size keyboard
Cons
Frustrating volume control
Slightly stiff mouse buttons
Bottom Line
Inexpensive laptop could be a good second PC for the home. It has an ineffective volume wheel, though.

Toshiba Satellite A215-S4757 Review, by Carla Thornton September 28, 2007
At $1000 (as of 9/12/07), our test unit sported a nice configuration for the money. It had a DVD burner, a full range of ports (including FireWire), and both an ExpressCard slot and a three-in-one memory card slot for easy digital camera downloads. At 6.2 pounds (minimum weight), the Satellite A215-S4757 is light enough to move from room to room or take on a trip.
The modern, one-piece dropped hinge means you don't have to look at ugly supports when the laptop lid is open, and the keyboard layout is first-rate. In the black accent panel topping the keyboard are seven handy buttons for turning on the notebook, launching your favorite browser, and controlling CDs and DVDs.
I found some design quirks I didn't like, however. The key tops are huge, almost too chunky for small hands. The volume wheel is annoying, as well. While a volume wheel is usually convenient to have, our test unit's wheel lacked a hard stop when increasing the volume; the wheel just turned and turned as if broken, and I couldn't be certain I had reached maximum volume without checking a screen gauge.
Performance was underwhelming. While the machine is zippy enough for answering e-mail, Web surfing, and word processing, the A215-S4757's overall WorldBench 6 Beta 2 score of 60 put it in a tie with an Asus A8JR-4P021C for the lowest mark among 13 recently tested laptops, and is almost 20 percent behind the average score of 74. The battery lasted 2.3 hours on one charge, about an hour shorter than the average of 3.2 hours for this laptop class. You can buy a nine-cell battery pack for an extra $135.
Toshiba's Satellite A215-S4757 is far from the speediest notebook on the block, but if you need a second or third inexpensive family PC to keep everyone happy, you could do a lot worse.

Strengths: I love this computer,I use it to run a business. My computer is working hard on business applications such as photo design, website design, uploading images and video and downlaoding all sorts of business applications.I have hasd this computer for almost 4 years and my computer really runs hard for at least 8 hours a day,my fand almost never turns off that is how hard I run it,and my computer works hard because of what I put it through.Over all I am really impressed with the performance of what I put it through,I should have purchased a $2000 - $3000 business or commercial computer instead I bought this Toshiba and I love it!! It definetly isn't new anymore and it has about a million hours of use on it,and I am running 5 to 10 programs non stop on it and it still works pretty good. I thought it was going to crash or burn out in the first year but surrisingly it hasn't !! Great job Toshiba !!! I will only buy Toshiba computers from now on!! Formerly an Apple Mac user.
Weaknesses: The battery life really isn't long, but I keep it plugged in all the time, sometimes the screen goes black,so you just restart it,no big deal. The volume control wheel donsn't work well,so I use the volume control on the screen.
Overall: My Toshiba computer should have been dead a long time ago,I really give this computer hell for at least 5 hours every day,and it still runs great with no real problems my A215-S4757 has to have a million hours of usage and I am really impressed.I just reacently purchased a Toshiba A505-S6986 thinking that my A215 will die at any moment, but my 4 year old, million mile computer refuses to die.I will only by Toshiba computers now,I am a former Apple Macbook user and really have to say ,GREAT JOB TOSHIBA!!!

Strengths: Very usable with good screen
Weaknesses: battery life sucks. Toshiba only provides a crippled battery ... but as soon as you register or get online, they punish you further by pushing a 'real battery' for an extra $135. You know it wouldn't cost that much for them to just add a real battery in the first place.
Overall: Great inexpensive computer if you are going to stay on AC power most of the time. If you are traveling, look elsewhere.

Strengths: HUGE hard drive, good screen size, comes with a CD and DVD burner and a built in 1.3 megapixel webcam. 2 gigs of RAM
Weaknesses: More difficult than it needs to be to use the volume button and the keyboard is a bit clunky.
Overall: I agree with some of the points in the professional review of this computer. The keyboard is a bit clunky, and the volume wheel can be hard to figure out, but beyond that, I love this laptop. I bought mine in July, 2007. It was a great deal then when I bought it and it is an even better deal now. I love Windows Vista. I love the fact that it has a huge hard drive. I love the fact that it has a built in webcam. I love the fact that it has both a CD and DVD burner. I highly recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a decent laptop. Is the performance the best? No, but I wasn't expecting the performance from a $5000 computer either. I am VERY happy with this laptop!

Strengths: Nice multimedia features and good processing power.
Weaknesses: Slow hard drive, and worst of all it randomly shuts down without notice. There are many reviews on the internet describing the same behavior, which means it's a product defect, buy at your own risk, you have been warned! (hopefully you are lucky enough to read this before it's to late, $1000 down the drain).
