The HP w2207 delivers one of the better-designed 22-inch wide-screen LCD monitors we've seen, earning extra points for its easily adjustable double-hinged base and for its strikingly good looks. It does lag behind other 22-inch LCDs in overall performance, particularly on graphics tests. At $360 (as of October 9, 2007), it's pricier than better-performing displays, but it offers the best combination of features and quality.

HP w2207
w2207 Review, by Roy Santos October 23, 2007
The display's glossy screen (which HP calls BrightView) may not be for you, particularly if you find background reflections distracting, but it produced natural color and uniformly sharp text. Word and Excel documents looked consistently bright across the screen, even at the corners. Text edges were sharp, resulting in easy-to-read documents on Web pages and other text-heavy documents. The LCD rendered skin tones on a diverse group portrait with few traces of purple on darker skin or of overly pink tones on lighter skin, though jury members did note a lack of richness. The display was weakest on our grayscale and color-scale tests, where judges penalized it for dark shades and hard-to-discern colors. Graphics work that requires precise, deep contrast may suffer on this monitor.
In a screening of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the monitor rendered realistic skin tones, especially those of the pirate Jack Sparrow, contrasting nicely against the lighter tones of the rest of the cast. Reds, particularly in uniforms, were balanced and saturated, while blues were pleasing, though darker uniforms tended to lose some detail. Panning motion was excellent, with only the barest hints of shadowing. The monitor comes with speakers built into the back, which keeps the monitor's appearance clean and consistent. But partly because they're in the back and partly because they're rather weak, the speakers produced muffled and at times almost unintelligible dialog; they're inadequate for any real multimedia applications that require sound.
The display moves up and down easily, thanks to a height-adjustable double-hinged base that seems to float when you push it up, but becomes quite stable when positioned. Slivers of silver accent the top and bottom of the black glossy bezel. The stand reminded me of a rectangular paddle. The main drawback of the double hinge is that it makes the w2207's footprint large for an LCD of its class--so it may not be suitable for tiny, crammed desks.
The on-screen display (OSD) menu is easy to access, thanks to clearly labeled buttons at the bottom of the display. It includes presets for four common viewing tasks: 'movie', 'photo', 'gaming', and 'text'. The monitor can pivot from its default landscape position to a vertical portrait mode; and HP includes My Display software for automatically adjusting the orientation of the display 90 degrees clockwise. In my test, the software worked well--but after activating the automatic function. I couldn't access the regular OSD menu until I exited the My Display software. After PC World concluded its tests, an HP representative told me that the company had solved the incompatibility. In any case, My Display replaces many OSD functions with an easier-to-use monitor calibration tool. It offers brightness, contrast, and white-point (or white-balance) control via a software interface.
HP separately sells various Easy Clip accessories that you can attach to the sides of your monitor. Among your options are a Webcam, a clip to hold photos, and a bud vase to add whimsy to a frequently ignored peripheral. We didn't receive any accessories with our test machine, but they're available from HP's Web site.
The HP w2207 has a lot to offer, including sharp text and good design. And if you want to personalize your monitor with lots of adjustments, it deserves a serious look.

Duration of ownership: 1 Month
Strengths: Picture Quality Contrast, black to white HP Software, auto landscape, portrait Pivot, tilt, swivel eas of use Plug n play sleep mode
Weaknesses: Sound
Overall: Analog picture quality is the best I've seen. Finally a high def monitor where you can actually use the analog input. No bleeding images or hard to read text. The text is as sharp as can be and the pictures are crystal clear and the colors are vibrant. Functionality is excellent. Tilt, swivel, pivot to landscape or portrait. On screen menu is easy to use. The hp software is a dream. It guides you through the setup process. Absolutely make your monitor look perfect. I tried to setup my monitor without the software and could not get the perfect results. So use the software. I have an xp machine. The only let down are the speakers. There is re-verb on the sound. Everything echo's. However you do not buy a monitor for bose quality sound so just ignore the speaker deficiency. I strongly recommend this monitor. I am using the analog input and can tell you it is better than HD picture quality.

Duration of ownership: 3 Months
Strengths: Screen size, resolution, USB connection
Weaknesses: Footprint and smears on the screen
Overall: I have had this monitor for a few months now and it is probably the best monitor that I have ever owned. The picture is beautiful in most applications such as movies, pictures and text, but I have noticed a very poor picture when it comes to dark colors. I do a considerable amount of music production/audio editing and with some of my programs FL Studio 6.0 to be exact the background color is do dark and undesirable it makes it very difficult to see all of the applications editing features and functions. The screen size is very large and allows for all of my software with multiple windows to be up and accessible without minimizing or moving around different windows. Great for musicians that tend to run into this problem. Overall the monitor looks so good that it almost makes the music sound better just by the appearance on the screen. I would recommended this to all of my friends with little caution.

Strengths: Brightview clear screen, colors and text flawless, great monitor stand rotates to portrait and landscape positions, built-in speakers.
Weaknesses: Buggy pivot control software for rotating monitor.
Overall: This is by far the best monitor I have used. I ordered it directly from HP. It has a beautiful brightview clear screen with a nice shiny black bezel around it. I develop software for a living and use this monitor more than 12 hours a day. The supplied pivot software for rotating monitor is buggy, especially after updating video drivers. It does not always work right and support to get it to work is not there. Speakers are not the best for music and video, but for basic audio feedback, it is nice to have them there. Two USB ports on the side of the monitor are a nice addition. There is a nice accessory pack available that allows hanging my headset on the side of the monitor, as well as pictures, pen or flower.

Strengths: Beautiful colors, extremely sharp, great contrast ratio, highly adjustable stand, USB ports, screen can rotate 90 degrees.
Weaknesses: High-gloss screen reflects lights from behind easily. Default settings must be turned way down. Provided software is buggy (even at ver. 1.11).
Overall: Before this monitor I had tried Samsung's 226bw for a week, a comparable widescreen offering. This screen is much better. The blacks are much darker, there is no backlight bleeding at all, and the colors are much richer than Samsung's screen. I am very picky about my displays, but this unit does everything I want. It has no bad pixels at all, and this is common with these units I read. Movies look great on the screen and are ghost-free as does first person shooters. The colors are beautiful, although I do admit that for serious graphic artwork you'd best stick with a CRT since all LCDs have a relatively narrow color gamut, although are far, far sharper. One silly thing about this monitor are the default brightness and contrast settings, which are way too high and make the screen look worse than it should. To get the best picture on this unit, I recommend the user turn the brightness and contrast both way down. I have my brightness down to 80 and contrast to 65. These settings give more accurate color, sharpen text enourmously, and are still so bright and contrasting that one almost has to squint in a dim room to look at the screen. Overall, I love this screen.

Strengths: USB included, bright,
Weaknesses: major problems with calibration, text rendering
Overall: Display on my new iMac was perfect straight out of the box, no need to adjust anything, this wasn't by ANY measure. Grossly washed out, very harsh on the eyes text. After one hour of trying to calibrate this monitor (Somehow HP was too lazy to include a predefined color profile), much improvement but still far from what I see on my iMac. So despite my best efforts I have two screens now sitting side by side, one clearly inferior in terms of text rendering and that's the HP. Another problem: color shifts if you look at it from anything but a perfect 90 degree angle, this is especially pronounced in the portrait mode where additionally corners are much dimmer even when in perfect straight on viewing situation. Reflective (i.e. highly polished mirror like finish) not very helpful in normal usage, nice for video though. The monitor could use S-video input at this price ($330) Will probably return it to the store. (minor quibble: I like clean elegant Apple styling, being forced to look at a shiny phony-chrome HP logo, little buttons and totally unnecessary labeling all day long is simply not nice, also the stand is way too massive, out of place visually speaking)
