Canon's Pixma iP4500 inkjet printer rivals low-end color laser printers in speed. It also leaves many higher-priced inkjet competitors in the dust.

Canon Pixma iP4500 Inkjet Printer
Canon Pixma iP4500 Review, by Melissa Riofrio November 28, 2007
The Pixma iP4500 spit out text at an average rate of 11.7 pages per minute (ppm), and it printed complex graphics at speeds ranging from 2.8 ppm to 3.7 ppm. The text quality on plain paper was very nice--crisp, black, and just a little jagged in more-complicated fonts. While a laser could print better text, it couldn't compete with the Pixma iP4500's photos: Though color graphics tended to be yellowish (on both plain and photo paper), only flesh tones suffered from the excess attention--everything else looked vivid and natural. The Printers section of our How We Test primer has more information on these tests.
The ink mix benefits output quality. Dye-based cyan, magenta, yellow, and black offer a broad palette; a second, pigment-based black looks darker and lasts longer. Each ink's separate tank rests in a clearly visible slot above a permanent printhead. As other Canon printers have had for a while, an LED on the cartridge lights red when it's properly inserted--an odd color for affirmative feedback, but still informative. The Pixma iP4500's dye-based black costs 3.1 cents per page; a page with cyan, magenta, and yellow as well costs 8.4 cents. The pigment-based black, used only for plain text, lasts 5475 pages, or just a fraction of a penny per page.
The Pixma iP4500's black, shiny box seems to burst into action at your command. Push a button, and doors and flaps open to reveal the typical top input and front output trays, plus a second input tray underneath the main body. The latter takes a few, basic media sizes (letter, A4, A5). When the lower input tray is in use, it extends a bit from the front of the printer. The Pixma iP4500 can print on both sides of the page automatically from either input tray--a nice feature at this price point. The scattered control buttons were my primary design complaint: All have icons instead of plain-English labels, so they're harder to identify.
The bundled software (loaded when you install the Pixma iP4500) includes Easy Photo-Print EX software for organizing, editing, and printing photos, as well as Canon's My Printer application for adjusting settings and troubleshooting. A thorough on-screen manual explains both the printer and its software thoroughly. A Solutions Menu interface centralizes access to all of these items.
The Canon Pixma iP4500 offers excellent speed, sharp print quality, and useful features for a good price. If your color output tends more toward photos and graphics than charts and memos, it could be a good alternative to an entry-level color laser.

Strengths: Print Speed - compared to other photo printers...this printer is FAST!. The iP4500 has a separate black ink cartridge that is used for text printing...and prints text at a lower resolution(but still laser quality) in order to increase speed. I can get a full letter size page in 2+ seconds. 4x6 photos in about 40 seconds when set to "Best" quality. Photo Quality - I printed 36 photos at my nearest Walgreens the day before I purchased this printer. The next day I printed the same pics on the Canon iP4500. The print quality is the same. The only way I could tell which was which was by the watermark on the back of the photo paper. Duplex Printing - this feature was a must for me. I print a lot of text and I get tired of wasting paper. The printer can print on two sided photo paper without swearing the print. PRICE - It's hard to believe this printer is less than $150!!
Weaknesses: Paper size limited to letter. But it does print full 8x10 photos. If I need to print larger photos, I will send it out and have it done at a photo lab. No cute buttons...no flash card slots...no image viewer. But who needs these features when all your work is done from the PC. I prefer the simple and clean look and I never used these features on my last printer (HP).
Overall: I was planning on investing in two printers...one for text documents and the other for photos. However, this printer does both...extremely well. GREAT PRINTER!!

Strengths: High resolution, good picture quality
Weaknesses: None
Overall: This printer produceS excellent prints from any decent digital file. I have had good results in 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10 prints. Very vibrant color, good blacks, excellent contrast. I like the fact that you can feed paper from the top and from a side-mounted cassette. Makes it easy to use two different types/sizes of paper without having to change one. One proviso here: I only print photos on the Canon. The resolution and quality is amazing, best what I ever saw

Strengths: Great output, flexible paper handling, great price
Weaknesses: USB Cable not included
Overall: I purchased this printer to replace a Dell AIO 968 (which never printed photos well, even with a photo cartridge). My mother is not very technically inclined, but knows some basics. I was looking for a printer that she could use without a problem (3 simple buttons!!!) and would give great photo production (she loves to print lots of pictures of her grandkids). Photo output is just beautiful. Compared to the Dell (which isn't all that old!!!), this is is amazing. There is no banding, colors are beautiful, and the entire printer is very nice. Additionally, with the option of the paper cassette and rear paper tray, Mom doesn't have to remove all the paper to print a picture. Best of all - it's just a great printer -- no extras because they just aren't needed here. Highly recommended!!!

Strengths: Quality letters and outstanding photos. Easy and automatic setup.
Weaknesses: Takes a while for setup cycle to run. Large on your desk.
Overall: The completely automated alignment cycle is great. You do not have to do a thing but wait, and wait and wait, 13 minutes. After that is done, relax and enjoy the high quality of the letters and photos you will get. I had the i950 just before this and I think these photos are better. Enjoy it!

Strengths: Quick and Easy Setup. Stylish Design. Fast Printing.
Weaknesses: A bit bulky.
Overall: I bought this printer when my Canon S750 printer broke down after 6 years. The setup was very quick and easy, as I was able to follow the instructions and have everything setup in about 30 minutes. After printing a few pages, I can say that it is definitely an upgrade over my previous printer in terms of speed as well as quality. The printer looks great on my desk, with the shiny black color matching well with my other computer equipments. My only small complaint is that the printer is somewhat bigger than I expected. It is definitely not a small printer. If you're planning to put this on the desk, make sure to leave plenty of room for it.

Strengths: Brilliant color prints and excellent text printing speed
Weaknesses: Bulky size. Kind of noisy.
Overall: What this printer lacks in terms of style and looks, it definitely makes up in quality. The photo prints are amazing. The separate ink tanks make colors really sharp. Text printing is super fast. The unit does take up alot of desk space and it is on the noisy side during printing. But the quality at this price point cannot be match. Highly recommended.
