Now in version 11, Acronis True Image is the most powerful consumer imaging program on the market. It runs from within Windows or from a Linux-based boot disc, creates full and incremental images (backing up the entire drive and subsequently adding new and changed files), and offers the usual compression and encryption options.

Acronis True Image Home 11
Acronis True Image Home 11 Review, by Jon L. Jacobi October 25, 2007
If you choose the more expensive Workstation version and purchase a Universal Restore module, you can restore images to a PC whose hardware profile differs from the one on which the image was created.
Version 11's interface is friendlier than earlier ones, though still unintuitive at times. Its new Try & Decide mode works like a virtual machine, writing disk changes to a hidden recovery partition, and committing them later only at your discretion. Turn it on before you install unfamiliar software or browse to dubious Web sites. In the gold beta I tested, the feature exacted a noticeable performance hit, but it's still a nice safeguard.
You can also now restore individual files and folders from a full image within the main program, perform a quick system-state backup, and take advantage of improved filtering for file and folder backups. The interface may be befuddling in spots, but True Image is the best all-around backup utility available. Find a demo of it in our downloads library.

Duration of ownership: 2 Weeks
Overall: This software was apparently not beta'd properly. After what appeared install with purchsed disk, tried to update as recommended. Update hung-up just before completing. Could not do a clean uninstall. Could not do an over-install. Could not install original disk.Tech service has responded email after 2 days with a couple suggestions. Neither worked. They now have a copy of my install log and awaiting there response. The basis of purchasing this sofware verses Norton Ghost was recomendation by PCWorld, CNet and several others. I have many hours into trying to get this install problem resolved. With the magnitude of this issue, I am now wondering if it gets resolved-should I trust my back-up with it?

Strengths: Easy --- really easy --- to use for a computer user with moderate tech knowledge. More reliable recovery than Norton Ghost. Hands off backup
Weaknesses: Can have trouble with scheduling. Poor customer support (email only).
Overall: Norton failed me once too many times, so I switched to Acronis 10, then upgraded to this version. It has saved my bacon many times. Windows users need more than a simple backup; even on a barely used system, it crashes and burns from time to time, or an app stops working after an update. True Image allows you to roll back the clock to a time when the system worked; whether an entire disk image, or individual files. Users report issues with unattended scheduling not working, but I have not had to get hold of tech support --- which is a good thing because it's email only.

Strengths: I bought this because I needed to do backups on my Vista machine. The software worked as expected.
Weaknesses: The initial display could be a better, but it's OK.
Overall: I have a version of Acronis that worked on XP. I liked it so much that I bought this when I needed to backup my new Vista machine. So far, so good.

Weaknesses: System crashes. 'Bootable' Rescue media refuses to boot!!
Overall: I'm running W2K with no raid, and vanilla flavored MB and Plextor CD.Boot CD's won't boot, although all other Bootable CD's I have work fine.I used to like Acronis. Last good version was v8Stay the heck away from the new versions. They have added so much extra stuff to the package that they have LOST their original focus: Backup and Restore Partitions!!!z

Strengths: Very flexible. Doesn't use a lot of system resources for incrimental backups.
Weaknesses: Haven't had any problems yet.
Overall: I've used Norton Ghost for years, but on the recommendation of others, I picked up a copy of True Image. I'm very pleased with it! It was easy to set up automated drive backups across my network to my NAS, and True Image uses a lot less in the way of system resources for the backups than Norton Ghost did.
