Kodak's Easyshare 5500 All-In-One offers features that should satisfy photo enthusiasts as well as the small-office/home-office crowd. Unfortunately, it's a fairly slow, somewhat high-priced color inkjet multifunction printer.

Pros
Cheap ink; automatic duplexing
Good mix of photo, office features
Cons

Expensive; a little slow; no networking
Bottom Line
Poky speed and a high price detract from this MFP's useful SOHO and shutterbug features.
Kodak Easyshare 5500 All-In-One Color Inkjet MFP
EasyShare 5500 Review, by Melissa Riofrio January 17, 2008
The Kodak Easyshare 5500 All-In-One takes all major camera-card formats. The control panel's tiltable, 2.4-inch color LCD displays photos from your inserted media. The menus offer basic printing choices such as layout and quantity; you also get control-panel buttons for rotating the photo or zooming in on a specific area to print. Kodak's bundled EasyShare software helps you organize and edit your photos. The printer even autosenses the paper type and adjusts its quality accordingly, although it malfunctioned on our test unit--rejecting Kodak's own papers. Kodak subsequently issued a firmware upgrade to resolve this issue.
The Easyshare 5500 All-In-One offers a decent set of small-office features, notably a 35-sheet ADF and an automatic duplexer. Networking is its big deficit--it has only USB (Bluetooth is a $50 option). The 100-sheet input tray is smaller than I'd like, but not unusual for the category. Copy functions (from the control panel only) cover a good range of choices, and copy quality itself is good. Scan quality is acceptable, and the scanning from either the control panel or software is easy. Kodak's AiO Home Center offers a centralized interface for scanning and photo functions, as well as settings and other information.
The control panel is logically laid out with clearly labeled buttons, including ones to initiate each major function. There's no button for going back or undoing something, however, and it can be hard to tell whether you're supposed to press the OK or Start button, especially in Photo mode.
As with all inkjet multifunction printers we've tested, the EasyShare 5500 All-In-One is a lot slower in default mode than its top-speed, draft-mode specs would suggest. This machine managed a lackluster 6.2 pages per minute printing plain-black text, and a poky 2 ppm printing graphics. Text on plain paper looked good: charcoal rather than black, but fairly precise otherwise. Graphics printed on plain paper seemed a tad faded, while on photo paper everything was a little dark. On both papers, images still looked natural.
The machine is noteworthy for its low-priced ink replacements. There's a separate black for text, plus a color cartridge with five tanks for cyan, magenta, yellow, photo black, and a clear protective coating. A page of plain text costs just 1.8 cents, and a page of graphics, 6.9 cents. (A full-color photo will use much more ink.)
Kodak deserves credit for its economical inks and focus on photo quality. Unfortunately, these attributes together cannot overcome the EasyShare 5500 All-In-One's disappointing speed and fairly high price.

Strengths: There are no strengths to this product. Kodak has a good idea but poor reliabiltiy.
Weaknesses: Reliability! Not good when you have to return two products!
Overall: DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT! We purchased this product believing to spend a little more but save on ink! Well, the first one failed outright and the second one had a failed print head. Kodak replaced printhead but the product failed again! The print head is something the consumer has to install and after removing and looking at the print head contacts we could see they were FRIED! So after 2 products and 3 printheads we decided to return the item (150 miles round trip!) and get our money back!

Strengths: It is multitasker. The ink is cheap.
Weaknesses: It is big and boxy
Overall: I just bought this yesterday. I love it so much already. I can print pictures, copy, scan, and fax all on this machine. Also, I don't need to use a computer to download pictures from my digital camera. It has 2 slots for Sd cards and xd cards. It's not super fast at printing stuff out, but the quality is very good. It was a little more than I wanted to spend on a printer but the ink cartidges are considerably cheaper than others on the market.

Strengths: Copier
Weaknesses: Printer sounds horrible, poor print quality, not mac friendly
Overall: This printer has great prices on ink cartridges and I was so excited to purchase and be done with the hassell of over inflated ink prices. Well the printer in one word = awful. The sounds it produces while printing (when you can get it to print) is horrendous. It sounds like the plastic is about to snap at any moment. The quality of the prints are very poor as well. You maybe wondering about the picture printing. Me too! I was unable to get the 4x6 prints to work. It may be a function of using the memory card only but I got tired of trying to get it to print. The software package for the Mac is non-existent. In fact, you need to download it and not use the disc that was provided in the box. Don't waste you money on this product. There are many better printers at the same or less cost.

Strengths: Low priced ink.
Weaknesses: The printer is fairly slow in sending the paper from the tray to begin printing.
Overall: This printer has nice features, especially the tray for 4X6 inch prints. The print quality is average to good, and the price of ink cartridges is unbeatable... just can't find in stores, and must order online.

Strengths: Affordable ink. Black ink $9.99. Color ink $14.99. Bonus package includes 180 4x6 photo sheets with color cartridge for only $17.99.
Weaknesses: Noisy. Paper error.
Overall: I have had this printer since September. It prints 4" x 6" photos from camera memory cards very well, but after the card is downloaded, the pictures are automatically erased from the memory card. (Maybe I'm not doing something right.) When printing documents from a computer, the printer doesn't always recognize the paper. Sometimes you have to "trick" the printer into recognizing the paper. The printer is also very noisy and seems to want to "deep" clean the printhead every time the printer is turned on. My printhead messed up after about 90 days. After talking with customer service, Kodak "overnighted" a new printhead and both ink cartridges. I was very pleased with Kodak's customer care. All in all, the low cost ink cartridges are the best feature of this printer.
