Samsung FP-T5084 Review

by Roy Santos

This set scores with a combination of good performance, reasonable price, and competitive features.

The Samsung FP-T5084 offers pleasing colors and sharp picture detail in a sleekly designed cabinet. Moreover, this 50-inch plasma HDTV has an extremely affordable price ($2400), which helped it capture the Best Buy in our chart of 50- and 52-inch HDTV sets.

Colors in high-definition scenes were luxuriously rich. An HD scene of The George Lopez Show revealed bright, natural colors and realistic skin tones. Jurors watching Corpse Bride, a colorfully macabre animated film, gave the FP-T5084 a high score for the vivid tones and detail that it reproduced. Standard-definition quality was slightly above average; a standard-definition baseball game had well-saturated oranges and turf greens, with fine detail in dark areas and minimal pixelation.

The FP-T5084 offers a slew of adjustable settings, including RGB gain and offset controls in the White Balance section of the OSD menu (for fine color temperature controls), and separate pink, green, blue, and white settings in My Color Control. You also get Samsung's DNIe (Digital Natural Image engine), which combines noise reduction, color enhancement, and motion processing to make pictures look sharper. With DNIe enabled, images did look a bit sharper, brighter, and more color-saturated--unnaturally so, I thought. In the Blu-ray version of Phantom of the Opera, I preferred the TV's presets, such as the default Standard and Movie modes.

The TV's clean lines give it a stylish look, highlighted by a glossy black bezel and thin chrome accents on the left and right sides. The screen could use a better antireflective treatment; reflections from the room became distracting during some dark scenes. The speakers, located on either side of the TV, are far from the best. In Phantom of the Opera, audio seemed brassy and a bit muddled.

It's not the most cutting-edge or full-featured HDTV set, but the Samsung FP-T5084 scored high overall because it is inexpensive, well designed, and a solid performer.

Overall Evaluation: I bought my Samsung FPT5084 set right before the Super Bowl and let me tell you it did not disappoint. Yes I?m writing this review 3 months later, but I wanted to test out features and provide a comprehensive review.I want to say that this is by far one of my most cherished products I own and I highly recommend it. If you buy this set you will not be disappointed!!! I had done plenty of research as many of you are doing and will do because let?s face it this is an important purchase. Time and time again I found great reviews; after all it was rated as one of the best HD Plasma sets of 2007. After using this set I understand why so many people have good things to say. There are so many positives and very few cons and I?m glad I joined the club. To add to the charm, this set comes with on site 2 year parts and labor manufacturer?s warranty. One can also extend this warranty by 1 year if they use their credit card for the purchase (e.g. AMEX). At the moment the price is very reasonable, so take the plunge and you won?t regret it. People, if you want a great 50" 1080p Plasma set, then THIS IS YOUR SET. You can certainly thank me later after experiencing this true work of art.P.S. Strengths: Incredible Picture - Flexible picture adjustment options.Piano black cabinet is First Class.Flexibility and number of connections make this Plasma virtually future proof.

Weaknesses: None - no runs, no drips, no errors.

Overall Evaluation: I've looked and researched to the point my wife never thought we'd buy a TV! Let's face it, the technology landscape changes almost by the minute. In fact, the model number on this set changed with the new year! I compared side by side at the big box stores, it seems like I've read every tech article, product review, and spec document. This set is a "sleeper" in the 50inch 1080p plasma market. HD Cable and DVD source material appears nearly 3-D! The color and black level is as good as sets priced 2 or 3 times as much. Bottom line: from picture quality to the number and variety of hi-def connectivity to the way it looks on the wall- there's no contest - the Samsung FP-T5084 is the better quality and better value!
