The security protection of Microsoft's Windows Live OneCare 2.0 suite is much better than that of the debut version we reviewed more than a year and a half ago. Add to that a low price, and you have a solid, easy-to-use product for PC users who don't want to mess too much with software settings.

Microsoft Windows Live OneCare 2.0 Security and Utility Suite
Microsoft Windows Live OneCare 2.0 Review, by Narasu Rebbapragada January 22, 2008
OneCare combines the virus, adware/spyware, and two-way firewall protection of a security suite with the backup and defragging tools of a utility suite. I downloaded and installed it quickly, although I had to create a Windows Live ID to do so. One $50 license (as of 12/27/07) lets you use the software on three PCs, and you can use the program to back up to one or more CD/DVDs, external hard drives, and (new in this version) networked drive volumes. You can create backups on demand or on a schedule.
The software is simple to use, largely because it has few settings to configure. A status bar lets you know whether your PC's health is Good (green), Fair (orange), or At Risk (red), and prompts you to take the appropriate corrective action. The software ran smoothly on two test machines, one running Windows XP and the other running Vista Home Premium. (I was amused to see that Vista's User Access Control required that I grant permission to Microsoft's own security software to run.)
In performance tests by German security research company AV-Test.org, OneCare was reasonably good at detecting known malware samples. It recognized on average 95 percent of the backdoor programs, bots, Trojan horses, and worms in AV-Test.org's collection of 674,589 threats. In our recent roundup of security suites, detection percentages in this test ranged from 69 to 98 percent; though we can't compare exact test results between stories due to differences in sample sets, we can still reasonably conclude that OneCare did fairly well. OneCare also detected a pretty good 88 percent of adware and spyware, and 83 percent of rootkits. OneCare's heuristic ability to detect unknown threats based on their similarity to previously recognized samples was very good too.
On the downside, OneCare is tardy in responding to new security outbreaks. During a six-month period in 2007, Microsoft on average took 24 to 26 hours to release a threat definition update. That's appallingly slow, given that BitDefender and Kaspersky needed on average no more than 2 hours to update their respective suites.
OneCare has gotten much better at minimizing unnecessary pop-up alerts; the only blatant annoyance I encountered was that it required me to approve Google Desktop as a legitimate program. It didn't drag down my system, either, although in AV-Test.org's tests, the 5-megabytes-per-second scan rate was below average. On the other hand, the 8-MBps file copy speed with active real-time protection enabled was above average compared with results from the eight suites we tested for our previous roundup.
OneCare is inexpensive, particularly when you factor in its unique 24-hour free phone support. Holdouts for best-of-breed protection will still scoff at OneCare, but other users who don't want to think very hard about security should consider it.

Strengths: Easy to use and configure, complete set of security tools
Weaknesses: CPU usage
Overall: I downloaded the free trial of One Care to evaluate on my backup computer. It is a Pentium 3 800 mhz with 384 mb of ram, which is within the system requirements for OneCare. The program slowed the computer dramatically and often caused lockups. It took way too much time to load a simple program or go online. When I checked task manager it indicated the OneCare process was routinely using 80-100& of the cpu capability. In addition, running the tune up function took over 24 hours. Once I uninstalled ONe Care the computer operations returned to normal. The program may run better on a more powerful computer, but I was disappointed.

Strengths: No viruses that I'm aware of so it probably works. On the other hand, I've never had a virus show up in 15 years. Maybe I've just been lucky but it really doesn't say anything good or bad about the product.
Weaknesses: Heaven help you if you forget either the User ID or the password. You'll get no help from Microsoft and the product becomes useless.

Strengths: It does what is promises, automatically and without hassles. Auto backup to an external HD is a peace of cake. 1 click does the work.
Weaknesses: None found yet. No missing mails or whatsoever.
Overall: Before you buy you may use it 90 days for free! Buying online and installing it with licenses for 3 PCs is a pleasure. You don't notice it's there until the task-bar icon turns orange to tell you there is some problem. If you use the optimization planner you don't even get that one (the orange colour that is ;-) It's great. Am waiting for a LOC extension that does the same with the PCs optimization .(register cleaning, defragging, temp files cleaning, hard-disk control etc. the whole shebang for which you now need 3 or 4 programs to get it done. Call it the Live One Click Optimizer. In short "LOCO"

Strengths: Works well with XP, easy to use
Weaknesses: None
Overall: This software, contrary to my gut instincts about the manufacturer, is surprisingly easy to use and effective. Not only does it protect your computer from internet threats, but it allows you to install on multiple computers, and renewing is a breeze! I like how integrated it becomes with the operating system, almost as if they were made by the same company (oh wait, they are).

Weaknesses: Canceling your subscription cannot be done online. You must call 866-663-2273 during normal business hours and cancel by phone.
Overall: Nothing is straight forward when it comes to advanced problem solving and the program will nag the heck out of you if you work offline for days at a time.Your subscription is tied to a passport ID. This became annoying a year after I made it trying to remember it.Lastly...$50 is a lot of money per year. They really need to cut that price in half.

Strengths: From Microsoft, may have better integration with the OS.
Weaknesses: Anti spyware is basically the same as Windows defender. Not very well integrated with OS.
Overall: Pretty painless to use, everything is done automatically behind the scene. No annoying popup from the taskbar. In addition to check for virus and spyware, on the maintenance and performance side, OneCare performs tasks such as backing up data, applying patches and updates automatically, defrag the hard drive and cleaning the hard drive of unused files. This is nice if you don't already have norton or other tools that do these things. Also, it worked OK after I un-installed Mcafee.

Strengths: easy to install and operate
Weaknesses: Microsoft is fat and lazy. But with this one you can go elsewhere
Overall: Customer service is terrible. I had e-mails that have been disappearing from my inbox and I read that one care was doing it, plus it was a known issue by Microsoft. I looked in their data base, nothing, tried to find a help number to all, they don?t want you to call because finding it was impossible. So four calls later I got a number. I get this guy in India who after verifying that I had one care then told me that since outlook express is part of my operating system and my system was OEM I don?t qualify for help. I cancelled the service. When I need help I want to talk to an American who can speak English.
