Logitech Harmony One Advanced Universal Remote
Harmony ONE Review, by Becky Waring February 27, 2008
The Harmony One, like the Harmony 880 it replaces, fits comfortably in the hand, and has a charging cradle. Its bright, 2.2-inch color touch screen has innovative navigation controls around its edges that make it easy to move up, down, and around the various options. The navigation controls are a huge advance from the 880's screen-side buttons. So is the new push-button area below; the new buttons have distinct sizes, shapes, and placement, making the remote easy to use by feel alone (it is also backlit).
The touch screen shows commands and icons for common activities that initiate macros; touching 'Listen to Music' can turn on your stereo and media center extender, for example. And once you've started an activity, such as 'Watch TV', you can touch further selections like 'Favorite Channels', then use the standard push-button controls for changing volume or pausing playback as you would on any TV remote. It all works together intuitively.
While using the Harmony One was a joy, setting it up was not as much fun. You start the process on your PC or Mac by plugging the remote into your USB port and connecting to Logitech's online database of more than 225,000 devices. I threw every home-theater device I had at it: a Sony HDTV, a Sony DVD disc changer, two satellite TiVo DVRs, a Linksys Media Center Extender, an Apple TV, and even an old Sony VCR. The database had information for the Sony devices and the Apple TV, but the Linksys DMA-2200 extender was too new, and I had to set up the two TiVos manually because they had different channel arrangements.
The remote has a Help button to aid in diagnosing and fixing setup issues, but after going back and forth with the Setup Wizard, I decided to contact Logitech's tech support (available via e-mail or toll-free phone). I should have done that right off the bat. Its reps can interactively solve the thorniest problems--they have direct access to your device list in their online database. They can make changes to your devices and activities, which you can then sync to the remote and test in real time. They added the new Linksys commands to the database for me, and explained how to handle the two TiVos.
The holy grail of truly universal remotes is still elusive, but the Harmony One is your best option right now.

Strengths: Extremely versatile. Great database.
Weaknesses: Took a lot of trial and error to get where I wanted it. Slight but noticeable time lag between the push of a button and sending the signal.
Overall: I have a fairly complicated setup and some equipment that is ten or more years old. To my surprise the database included every device that I wanted to use. Some of the operations I wanted to program were moderately complex, and it took a fair amount of time to get each one down pat. Instructions are good, but it's not always easy to find the ones you want. Tech support is English-challenged, but was able to point me to the proper documentation every time. All in all, an excellent choice!

Strengths: This is the best Harmony Remote, ever!!!!! Great appearance, easy to navigate, rechargeable battery.
Weaknesses: It can not control a PS3 or Wii due to lack of bluetooth.
Overall: I have own two previous Harmony remotes and this model is by far the best one yet! The touch screen is terrific and the button layout is fantastic. I was able to migrate my old Harmony remotes settings over with the included software and then make additional tweaks without any difficulties. The remote's key light up when the remote is moved, so you can navigate the Harmony in even the darkest rooms. The rechargeable battery lasts for weeks at a time. The only negative is that it is unable to control bluetooth devices such as the PS3 and the Wii. I can not stress how much my family loves this remote.

Overall: It is a great product for home entertainments per Logitechweb-site it has 225,000 devices in its database. It replacesaround 5 different remotes at my house. Best of all it works with PS3 so I don't need to buy a PS3 remote and also works with my computer with Vista Ultimate on it. It takes some time to set up as it guides you through list of devices.Overall, well made product by Logitech.

Strengths: Nothing it its price range compares to the quality and customizability of this remote. This remote can be tweaked down to the smallest detail and preference. Controls are logical and well arranged.
Weaknesses: Slightly slippery construction. You would not want to drop an expensive remote like this on a hard floor. Battery life is only fair, however, the sleak charging cradle addresses this well.
Overall: This is by far the most advanced programmable remote that we have ever owned and, according to our research efforts, nothing anywhere near its price compares to the features of this remote. In 20 minutes we had this remote controlling a Toshiba TV, a French cable box, a military AFN satellite receiver, a DVD player, VCR, Apple TV, and a stereo tuner. Setup was amazingly painless. Later, we spent much more time fine tuning the order and names of buttons on the color touch screen, however, this was mostly a matter of arranging the most common commands acessed to be accessible as quickly as possible. Once you invest this time, you never have to do so again. This is one of the best electronics products we have ever purchased and it gets a very strong recommendation from us. We hesitated at spending this much money for a remote control, however, after receiving it we can say that this is not an overpriced product at all. 5 stars.

Overall: I got it to replace my Harmony 550. It has nice touchscreen with pretty good resolution. The screen is also colored. The shape is very ergonomic and a very smooth feel. Undoubtedly, regulates all of my components without a hitch. The buttons have also been paced strategically. Highly recommended.
