The Sharp Aquos LC-46D64U ($2000 as of November 4, 2008), has some nice design touches and delivered good image quality in our tests. But it's an expensive HDTV in view of its average specs.

Bottom Line
Good design and image quality make this set a viable option, but it's pricey given its lack of extras.
Sharp Aquos LC-46D64U 46-Inch LCD HDTV
Aquos LC-46D64U Review, by Lincoln Spector, PC World May 6, 2008
In tests conducted by the PC World Test Center, this model earned a performance mark of Good overall, ranking it below many other 46- and 47-inch sets we've tested. In particular, it graded significantly lower on performance than the Vizio VO47LF, the Samsung LN46A550, and the Samsung LN46A650.
The LC-46D64U has Sharp's Aquos Link Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) support, which allows it to control and be controlled by other Sharp devices. An option called Optical Picture Control automatically adjusts the TV's brightness to match the room's ambient light level, though that feature performed rather unremarkably in my hands-on tests.
When its settings are properly adjusted, the TV will shut itself off after 15 minutes of receiving no signal or after 3 hours of detecting no user interaction--a power-saving feature that might help the set avoid image retention, too. The LC-46D64U's Audio Only option lets you arrange to use the TV's sound without switching on its LCD, if you ever want to use your DVD player to listen to CDs. The set's audio quality wasn't bad, either. We noted clean sound without noise or distortion, though it lacks the forcefulness of a truly excellent TV sound system.
The Sharp is reasonably easy to use. Text displayed in the on-screen menus is small but readable, and the menus themselves look good. Unlike other sets' menus, the Sharp's main menu doesn't disappear when you adjust a video setting; but that's not too much of a problem, since the menu doesn't take up much of the screen. You can backlight the nicely shaped remote at the touch of a button, but some important controls (including menu and mute) have annoyingly small buttons--and though these buttons light up, the labels that identify them don't.
Printed on a grayish paper that doesn't do much for its readability, the trilingual manual (66 pages of English) is helpful despite its text-heavy design. And you can always download the PDF version from Sharp's Web site.

Strengths: nice cabinet design. once you get the colors adjusted they show beautifully, deep blacks.
Weaknesses: some non hd shows do not show so well, blurry and grainy. Owners manual is not so informative. I have a blue box with the number 3 that pops up on right upper corner of tv everytime sound changes from mono to stereo and I have searched manual up and down to find out how to remove it, does anybody know?? Non hd shows (some of them) are a little blurry and grainy, would a hdmi cable possibly help?
Overall: I think that for the price I paid it's a good beginner LCD (cc, $1299 black friday). This is my first LCD and maybe I expected a little more out of it. The hd is good, I have seen better.

Strengths: Great price, also hit a Black Friday deal and took it. Sharp delivers good quality. I've had a 32" Aquos for 2 years and love it, so really excited to get the 46" and move my 32" into my bedroom.
Weaknesses: I'm sure something will come up...just haven't had time...at the price it's hard to complain. Comparable 46" go much higher. The stand is a bit clunky, even though it has the same nice finish, but given the TV's size I guess that's the need.
Overall: Great TV, great price, great quality. Love the picture, HD looks fantastic, and with digital cable (Comcast), the standard channels look really nice. For the person whose brightness adjusts automatically, check out page 26 on your manual. You might have the OPC setting on. That's a light detector, so if there's a lot of light in the room the screen gets brighter, if there's less light it dims, and you can tweak that somewhat. I've always kept it on for my 32" and I find it helpful, but if it's dimming too far definitely should be adjusted.

Strengths: price, number and location of inputs
Weaknesses: where to start?
Overall: Well, you know if you experienced Sony before, this one is just a joke. However- you get what you pay for. I guess I better stop right here. I had to buy one more LCD and didn't need to get one more Bravia. But listen up, stop misleading people, it is just a cheap Sharp.

Strengths: All good
Weaknesses: Nothing so far
Overall: well, this is one good deal, this tv is all good, one thing i advice who ever is buying soon (this tv or any HDTV). please prepare the right conditions for those kind of tv's to work, then complain later. an HDTV needs an HD output in order to work as it was intended to. wheather you are with a dish or a cable company, call them and make sure your box or receiver is good enough to get HD channels. do not expect your new widescreen HDTV to display SD (standard definition) channels as good as your boxed old TV set. why

Strengths: Skinny design. Front panel is almost all screen. Really the nicest feature about the tv
Weaknesses: Banding, banding and more banding. saw three different TVs with Banding in all of them.
Overall: I can't stress enough how bad this TV is. When I first got the TV (CC black Friday great price) I was in awe of how great everything looked. Then during certain bright scenes I began to notice the banding. Not 1 band, 2, 3 bands, but 4. I figured I just a bad TV. Not so. Replace same thing. 52d64U demo at BB same thing. Review from Cnet.com nails it. This TV is not for the visual purest. It is really noticeable during Pans. Once you know where the bands are it hard to watch TV without seeing them every time. DON'T GET THIS TV. I know that it costs a lot less than other band of similar size, but it is still a lot of money and not worth it. Thank God the CC in my town allowed me to return it within 30 days after Xmas. Now I'm getting the Sony 52xbr4. I know that it is a lot more, but the picture is going to look amazing. (It?s still in transit. I will review when I get it)

Strengths: Picture clarity, contrast, deepness of blacks, sound quality, handling of fast motion scenes without blurring, ease of initial setup.
Weaknesses: Remote control requires some time to get used to.
Overall: The Sharp Aquos LC46D64U LCD HDTV has lived up the high expectations we had before purchasing it. Before getting DirecTV HD hooked up to the unit, we were pleased with the strength of the Over the Air (OTA) digital tuner that enable it to pull in all the local stations as well as many PBS stations, even without a proper antenna being connected. The HD picture looks great with rich colors and deep blacks. We have been very satisfied with how well the Sharp Aquos LC46D64U has handled fast moving action in football and basketball. My sons are avid video gamers with Xbox and Wii with their racing and action games. The Sharp Aquos LC46D64U looking great and keeping up with the action in the games. We needed to slightly adjust the the brightness and contrast controls as the brightness was all the way to the right (maximum) and contrast was far to the right. These settings may vary with your experience. Despite requiring these changes, the initial settings have been acceptable until more controlled calibration is performed using a DVD calibration disc.Overall, we are very satisfied with our purchase and have recommended this model to others looking for a similiar sized HDTV.

Strengths: great picture, very easy to mount to the wall, great cabinet stand (included), easy to navigate thru the menu
Weaknesses: none that I can tell in the 3 days that I've had it
Overall: The Sharp Aquos 46" Flat Panel LCD HDTV (model # LC-46D64U) is an excellent TV for an excellent price. I researched several tv's for about 8 months before I bought this one. It was $1600.00 (marked down from $2600.00) with free shipping. I bought it the day after Thanksgiving so there was a big sale price. The wall-mount hardware was $100.00 and very easy to install. If you want to place it on a cabinet or table this TV comes with a real nice stand. The TV is only 3.75" deep so it doesn't take up space like conventional TV's. The picture is incredible. I don't subscribe to HDTV service yet, but I might do that next year and the picture only gets better then. Since I like this TV so much I might purchase a Sharp 37" flat panel next year for my bedroom. Very impressive and I highly recommend it.
