Linksys Linksys Media Center Extender DMA2200
Linksys DMA2200 Media Center Extender Review
- I like the concept of Microsoft's Windows Media Center. It presents many forms of media, such as downloadable movies and TV shows, news and entertainment clips, live and recorded TV content, and your own audio, video, and photos. It even does all that in one interface that you can navigate on your TV set--but only if you keep your Media Center PC in the same room as your TV. Enter third-party Media Center Extenders, devices that link to your TV via a standard connection and use your wireless network to deliver your Media Center content to your TV. Unfortunately, after trying a second-generation extender, the Linksys Media Center Extender DMA2200, I'm starting to lose enthusiasm for the concept.

Strengths: Streaming HDEasy SetupDoes what it's supposed to.
Weaknesses: Pretty slow booting.Occasionally needs to be restarted.
Overall Evaluation: My family loves these things. I picked up three of them and they work great. All are hard wired so I can't comment on it's wireless performance. It effortlessly handles our ATSC TV PVR requirements (which are ~2-3 hours daily) as well as movies/videos. I have the 2008 TV Pack update for VMC and it works great. The My Movies plug in works very well too. It took a couple tries to get vmcNetflix going, but it too is now working as advertised. I convert all my movies to mp4 or dvr-ms (mp2) so there are no codec issues. The only down sides are that it takes about a minute to boot up and occasionally while using the fwd/rwd extensively, it will hang up and need to be restarted by the switch on the back. I'd say that happens once every couple weeks or so. It's response time isn't as fast as on the PC, but considering it is streaming through the network, I find it completely acceptable. I'd definitely buy it again.
