You have a bright future ahead of you if you buy Toshiba's 42RV530U--but not in a good way. Our judges found its images overly bright and washed out, with yellowish or orangey skin tones.

Pros
Auto input switch when source turned on
Very good sound.
Cons
Overbright images; yellowish skin tones
Incomplete documentation
Bottom Line
Quality sound and nice design touches don't make up for this set's overly bright and washed out image.
Toshiba Regza 42RV530U 42-inch LCD HDTV
Regza 42RV530U Review, by Lincoln Spector July 17, 2008
In perfomance it was fourth among the five models on our Top 42-Inch HDTVs chart. Only AOC's Envision L42H761 did worse.
I liked the sound quality. Voices and music both strained a bit at full volume, but came out fine when I brought the volume down to a reasonable level. Of course, if you want really good audio, you'll need to invest in a separate home-theater sound system.
On the upside, you shouldn't have much trouble setting up and using the 42RV530U. Toshiba placed most of the input jacks where you can get to them with relative ease. The menus are logically organized and mostly easy to read (though the Audio icon looks like a CRT in profile). The well-designed remote control glows in the dark.
If you can't figure something out, though, the manual won't help much. Some items and issues (the "Natural" picture-size option, how to update firmware) aren't satisfactorily explained. You get no quick-start guide, and you won't find an electronic version of the manual on Toshiba's Web site.
Toshiba included some nice touches. Pressing Play on your DVD or Blu-ray Disc player (with some models, at least) will direct the HDTV to the appropriate input. The 42RV530U can freeze-frame, too, but it lacks picture-in-picture.
With the Toshiba 42RV530U priced at $1300 (as of July 11, 2008), it's the image quality, not the cost, that makes this an easy TV to skip.

Strengths: Great quality picture and sound when viewing high definition channels. Easy to set up.
Weaknesses: Poor picture quality on standard broadcast. Television video intermittently shuts itself off.
Overall: Purchased this television based on good reviews and am very satisfied with it when it works. However, the intermittent shutoff problem is very frustrating and I am experiencing poor customer service from Toshiba in attempting to get it repaired. Have had it in the shop twice and repairman can't fix it. Toshiba says it will make no more repair attempts until I exchange the cable box to eliminate it as a source of the problem even though the television shut itself off while in the repairshop, too. Toshiba rep is very unprofessional in handling consumer complaints. Although the set works great most of the time, I would not recommend it to anyone only because of the poor customer service I've experienced from Toshiba. I'm quite certain that the set I got is simply a lemon, but Toshiba is unwilling to admit to that.

Strengths: Fantastic picture, size, weight, connectivity, and variety of adjustments
Weaknesses: The built in audio system leaves a lot to be desired. Its quality of sound and variety of adjustments are fine, however the sound level must be brought up to mid range or higher in order to hear.
Overall: I've had this TV now for over 3 1/2 months and I couldn't be happier. The build quality is fantastic. The amount of HDMI connections (4) is wonderful. There's plenty of other connection possibilities here including a PC connection. There is virtually no glare on the screen at any time and the price is certainly right. I would recommend this TV to anyone.

Strengths: Easy to setup, easy to use controls, great picture with HD service, great value for the price
Weaknesses: poor picture , fuzzy with non-HD broadcast channels
Overall: I am very impressed with the Toshiba REGZA 42RV530U that I recently purchased from Crutchfield.com. It is a very good quality HD set for the price and it has all of the features you need for a low cost yet high quality LCD HD setup. If you do not have an HD dish or cable and do not intend to upgrade to one with the purchase, then do not but this set. The picture quality for non-HD broadcasts is blurry and visually poor quality. For those who have HD service or plan to upgrade this is a great television at a great price with a great view when watching HD programs

Strengths: Gorgeous HD picture! Pleasantly aesthetic bezel & speaker. Easy to use menu system. Nice shortcut buttons on universal remote. Rear cable straps help organize connected cables.
Weaknesses: RF Input points down making it harder to plug in if rear space is limited. SD picture is OK. No headphone jack. No shortcut to change from Antenna to Cable input.
Overall: This is my first LCD TV. So far the overall verdict is awesome. The cons above are more quibbles than real negatives. Regarding the SD picture, I haven't had too much opportunity to play with the settings... Actually, I haven't changed anything, I'm using it with all the default settings. So it might get better with adjusted settings. I'm comparing it against my old Zenith tube TV which had a very sharp & clear SD picture (but died). The HD tuner picked up more channels than I expected. The menu system also seems upgradeable. I was also pleasantly surprised to find a very complete, but large, manual (it's in English & French).

Strengths: I was very impressed with the picture on this tv and the price and it was very easy to set up, it has a swivel stand which is a great.
Weaknesses: none so far
Overall: I am very impressed with this tv it is simple to use, very easy instructions and it was priced very nicely and the swivel stand it a very nice feature, my tv sits near a outside door and i thought that the reflection from the light coming in the door was going to be a problem however it is not, and it does not have an anti glare screen, so that is very nice. I would recommend this tv to everyone. I am very happy and impressed with it.
