What You Should Know about the EOS 50D

Larger-Than-Average Optical Zoom Range

The optical zoom range on this camera is sufficiently broad to give you considerable creative control. Your options extend from individual portraits to group shots to wide-angle landscapes. Most point-and-shoots offer a focal length range that’s roughly equivalent to 35mm to 105mm on a 35mm film camera. At the wide end (the 35mm, in this case), they shoot a bit wider than what you see with your eye. At the telephoto end (the 105mm, in this case), they can zoom in a good deal closer than you’d be able to with the naked eye.

Strengths: Great Image Quality, Stunning Color

Weaknesses: sometimes slow autofocus in low light, no video mode

Overall Evaluation: It has been a wile since I have shot with a SLR. So, take my review with a grain of salt.Overall this camera is great so far. The color is just amazing - very vibrant. As expected the built-in flash is limited. When used as a focus assist beam the flickering light can be a bit annoying. I am ordering a Speedlite and hope that it's focus assist beam is more subtle. I am still figuring out the optimal setting to use the flash as a fill without overpowering the subject.Aperture and Lightroom (non-beta) software do not have the RAW profiles for this camera yet. Therefore I have not tried doing post work with the RAW files. The camera is pretty quick at emptying its buffer when shooting burst. I was able to shoot 12 - 14 RAW+Ljpg before the buffer filled up using SanDisk Extreme III cards. The included lens has a decent range. I would like to see it come with a wider angle lens.
