Overall: I love my new hp 318xi camera and I will recomand it to any body who is looking for a digital camera with mega pixel quality.

Overall: I'm only a beginner in digital photography, so I was thrilled to discover that even I, who knows nothing about digital cameras, could take great pictures as soon as I read the manual and put in the batteries. Indoor shots looked great, as well as outside "action" shots of my son performing his skateboarding tricks. Quick and easy to download to my computer, all the prints I made turned out great, with lots of detail, and I didn't have to break the bank to do it. Great for beginners, small pricetag for those not wishing to spend a whole lot. I'd recommend this camera to anybody, and am buying another for my son.

Overall: THIS IS A GREAT LITTLE CAMERA IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR OUT OF THE BOX USE. IT'S VERY SIMPLE TO OPERATE AND WITH THE USB CONNECT IT IS SO EASY TO DOWNLOAD YOUR PICTURES INTO YOUR PC! AT FIRST I WAS DISPLEASED WITH THE QUALITY OF THE PICTURES WHEN PRINTED OUT, BUT IT TURNED OUT TO BE MY PRINTER! I READ AND READ AND READ REVIEWS ON DIGITAL CAMERAS I THINK I CAN WRITE MY OWN REVIEW PAGE I RESEARCHED SO MUCH, AND I SEE WHERE THE 318 GETS POOR REVIEWS BUT "PLEASE" BELIEVE ME IF YOU GET A PRINTER WITH 2400X1200 DPI YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED WITH THE QUALITY THIS LITTLE CAMERA CAN PRODUCE. I HIGHLY RECCOMMEND IT. THE PRICE IS GREAT AND YOU WILL LOVE IT!!

Strengths: As an owner of a contacting company I am drawn by 3 factors 1. ease of use 2. price 3. durability.

Overall: This camera easily fits into my employees pockets. It is very easy to use and takes a nice basic picture. We own two and use them only for work and pictures of jobs. They are more than adequate. If one is lost, it is no great loss as they are cheap. They take a good beating and have proven durable in falls. I am planning on purchasing 2 more.

Strengths: Simplicity. 2 mega pixel. Great software. Convenient built in 8MB memory.

Weaknesses: Inconsistent exposure. Entirely awful autofocus. Cannot control autofocus. Cannot turn off autofocus.

Overall: Regrettably, I can't return this thing to Circuit City, I waited too long. The autofocus on the HP 318 is not very smart, almost negligently stupid. Any obstruction closest to the camera, it will be focused on. The obstruction can be 1% of the picture and on the lower left hand corner, it will focus on that 1% percent and completely make the rest of the 99% out of focus. Without any obstructions, it does focus in and does a satisfactory job. But for taking pictures of lets say engine bay in a car, well, that would be challenging. Exposure is also odd. I will take the same indoor photo twice, with flash, with the camera on a tripod for steadiness. The brightness on each photo would be different. Manual recommends holding down the button half way for a second or so for the camera to focus and adjust exposure. It didn't matter, it still took different pictures. You'd might as well forget about moving subjects, this thing is too slow which is to be expected for a low end camera. I am just entirely surprised that you can't turn off the autofocus. Also, outdoor shots seem dark, I find myself always adjusting color with the ACDSee software that came with the camera. Doesn't seem to matter which of the three picture quality settings, they come out a little dark. This camera is good if you want to take simple pictures of your daughter, or putting pictures on Ebay, but you should seriously consider spending the extra $130 for a camera you can control the autofocus.
