Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S85
CyberShot DSC-S85 4.1MP (2272X1704) 16MB Review, by Carla Thornton October 24, 2001
WHAT'S HOT: The $599 Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S85 lasted the longest on one battery charge of any camera we tested for this roundup: an impressive 427 shots. This heavy but stylish camera includes some unusual extra features, one of which allows you to choose a companion action to occur at the same time you take a picture. For instance, you can set the camera to simultaneously take a high-quality TIFF photograph and to create a smaller one for e-mailing. The camera can capture short movies with sound, too. Using the small-but-handy Jog Dial, you can set the aperture or the shutter speed, or you can flip through captured photos.
WHAT'S NOT: The shutter release has a hair trigger, and sometimes we inadvertently snapped a picture before the camera finished focusing. Some higher-end functions could be more accessible. For example, you must visit two separate menus to set up auto-bracketing (a function that lets you take three shots in succession, one at the chosen exposure setting, and two more at settings above and below the chosen setting). The camera's manual focusing gauge displays only meters, not feet.
WHAT ELSE: The Cyber-shot DSC-S85 took good pictures overall, though shots of our mannequin were a tad oversaturated and underdetailed. Most of the DSC-S85's controls are located to the left of the LCD--this should please southpaws, if not right-handed photographers.
UPSHOT: Despite an oversensitive shutter, the DSC-S85 is a reasonably priced, elegantly designed 4.1-megapixel camera.

Strengths: excellent photo quality, nice features, excellent durablilty, great accessory options, good battery life.
Weaknesses: Price is a little high.
Overall: I've used this camera for two years now and I have absolutly 0 complaints. I've never had to contact Sony support so I can't comment on them. However, I would recommend this camera for anyone who is serious about taking photos. I love it.J.R.

Strengths: Great resolution. Easy to use. Battery life is great.
Weaknesses: None!
Overall: I've had this camera for about a year and a half. It's an outstanding machine! I bought 2 of the 128meg memory sticks, an extra battery, and a nice padded carrying case. I can grab the bag and know that I've got around 300 pics capability - more than I need. I love it! I got mine back when it was $800. Now that the price has come down it is an even better deal. This camera rocks!

Strengths: Great quality shots. I love the camera. I love the memory stick features. It makes it very versatile. My Clie, DSC85 Dig. camera and my Vaio PC all run of the memory stick. I just plug it in and go.
Weaknesses: Probably the biggest weakens is the transition from day the to night. During that time the camera has a hard time determining which way to go. Making the photos somewhat dim. Besides that it rocks.
Overall: I would recommend buying the camera in a hart beat. I did my homework. Take my word for it, it's the best digital camera you can get for the money. A 35 mm camera is equivalent to a 3.3 mega pixel digital camera and this camera is a 4.1 mega pixel. So you do get a higher quality picture than most 35 mm cameras. I took my Digital camera to my friends wedding in Hawaii. I took a lot of photos thinking I wouldn't be out any thing if the shot were not that great. They hired a pro photographer to get the good shots. When we all got back home we had a BBQ to see how all the pictures turned out. When they got the pictures back from the pro they were a little disappointed because the shots were not as good as they had hoped they would be. The ironic thing is when I showed them the pictures that I took they both started to cry because they though they had lost the moment. We framed a lot of the pictured that I took. They were better quality than most of the shots that the pro took. To me, the camera is about as good as they get. And the cost to quality ratio is well worth the 500 bucks.

Strengths: Carl Zeiss lens affords sharp, crisp images. Has a good "feel". The 4.1 mpixel resolution allows excellent photo printing.
Weaknesses: The menu system takes a little getting used to. Cannot use auxiliary flash with wide angle lens.
Overall: This is my third Sony digital camera. Starting with the MVC-FD72. I liked the ease of using the floppy disk but wanted more storage so I purchased the FD92 with the memory stick plus the floppy but the resolution was limited to 2.1 mpixels. When I read all the rave reviews on the DSC-S85 I decided to purchase one & have not been disappointed. I went to a local electronics firm & "hefted" several of the highly rated digital high resolution cameras & this had that good "feel". I highly recommend this camera to the novice & expert alike.

Strengths: Great pictures, easy to operate
Weaknesses: Power switch sluggish sometimes. Have to be close for flash to work well.
Overall: I have used the camera for a year and have taken a thousand or more photos with it. I print them on a Lexmark Z-65 and have had wonderful results in either the standard or high quality mode. A bigger memory stick is a must and an auxillary flash is a great bonus. I am very happy with it and the memory stick is compatible with my Sony computer, which is one reason I bought the Sony camera. I am now thinking of buying a small Sony 5.0 MP to carry in my pocket as this one is sometimes too large for all ocassions. It is a great camera and I love it. I beleive it is a great choice for general use for anyone who wants a digital camera and the price has gone down a couple of hundred since I bought mine.
