Canon CanoScan N670U
CANOSCAN N670U FLATBED SCANNER 600X1200DPI USB 48 COLOR & MONOCHRO Review, by Richard Jantz October 19, 2001
WHAT'S HOT: The sleek three-pound Canon CanoScan N670U offers engaging 48-bit-color images for a very affordable $79 price. In our on-screen judging of a 100-dpi (Web quality) photo, images displayed accurate color tones and sharp details overall. Color accuracy in print tests was similarly likeable, but some details were fuzzier than on-screen versions. A photo scanned at 1200 dpi (interpolated) showed well-balanced, pleasing color and contrast, though it looked predictably jaggy.
The scanner's front panel has three handy quick-start buttons--for scanning, copying, and e-mailing (via MAPI-compliant software). Like the CanoScan N1240U, the N670U is powered through a USB connection, and does not require a separate power supply or plug-in outlet. As with all Canon scanners, live technical support is available six days a week.
WHAT'S NOT: With 600 dpi of optical resolution, the N670U is the lowest-resolution scanner in our August 2002 roundup, and that lack of power became apparent when we scanned at maximum resolution. To achieve results comparable to those of the other scanners in our test set, we had to use an interpolated resolution of 1200 dpi. While the 1200-dpi line art looked smudgy and lacked a lot of the original's detail, the high-resolution color photo looked surprisingly good, as described above.
Because the N670U uses a contact image sensor rather than a charge-coupled device to record data, the N670U can't accommodate a transparency adapter or an automatic document feeder. So-so speed is another drawback to the N670U, attributable mainly to its using the USB cable for both power and data transfer. Although it was reasonably speedy at scanning a 2-by-2-inch photo at 1200 dpi, the N670U lagged behind the pack on line art and on a magazine page, both letter-size pages scanned at 300 dpi.
WHAT ELSE: The CanoScan N670U is part of Canon's fourth generation of contact-image sensor scanners, which are much thinner than typical CCD-based units because they use smaller and fewer parts. If desk space is limited, you can operate the N670U in a vertical position by using the supplied plastic stand and Velcro strip (to keep the cover closed). The satisfactory software bundle includes an image editor (ArcSoft PhotoStudio 2000), a robust optical character recognition tool (the full version of ScanSoft OmniPage Pro 9), and an image management application (ArcSoft PhotoBase 2.1) that can also archive images on a CD-RW drive.
UPSHOT: The stylish Canon CanoScan N670U is a fine choice for anyone who wants an unobtrusive and affordable scanner that produces attractive on-screen images.

Strengths: Very small size. Can store vertically with the stand included. Z-lid for bulky scans. Easy to use.
Weaknesses: When looking at the scan on the computer screen sometimes they look horrible, but when printed they look great!! This is the Canon software that is included, not the scanner.
Overall: You can't get any better for this price. I wanted an entry level scanner to scan CD covers. This was a perfect choice. I even forgot I have it sometimes because I store is vertically against my monitor so it takes up hardly any space. I love this scanner and it hasn't given me any trouble at all. I love the metallic grey/blue color too!!

Strengths: easy to use, small footprint, easy setup, great price
Weaknesses: doesn't handle legal size (14X11)
Overall: My old Microtek E3 wouldn't work without a new adapter card for my new computer (pci vs isa)which I priced at $50 so I bought a new scanner for $100. The Canoscan N670U is perfect for the small office and the software that comes with is easy to use. The OmniPage Pro 9.0 did a great OCR job of reading some reviews I wanted. If this came in a 14X11 size it would be a 5 star instead of 4.
