Ricoh MediaMaster MP7083A
January 2, 2001
WHAT'S HOT:
For little more than the price of a low-cost 8X/4X/32X drive, Ricoh's MP7083A 8X/8X/32X drive gives you double the CD-RW write speed. The solidly built MP7083A is also an excellent all-around performer, turning in the sixth-fastest audio extraction time we've seen to date--3 minutes flat--and the eighth-fastest time installing Microsoft Office 2000.WHAT'S NOT: Though a one-time-only annoyance, the software installation routine requires you to run the installation program twice: once to install the Prassi PrimoCD mastering software, and a second time to install the same company's abCD packet-writing software. PrimoCD's HTML help file lacks an index.
WHAT ELSE: The MP7083A comes with an industry-standard one-year warranty. Ricoh provides toll-free support for 15 hours on weekdays plus 9 hours on Saturdays.
BEST USE: This Ricoh model provides an excellent blend of CD-R/CD-RW write performance and CD read performance for the budget-minded user.

Strengths: Plays great games (no problems with hitman 2 or nba live 2003).
Weaknesses: Wish it came with a remote wonder!
Overall: I have the pci version of this card because when I bought my computer I didn't know what agp was! **** compaq! lol. Oh well. At least this card works great. Tv works, and I can play games, and when someone notices a difference of quality of the video between their computer and mine, I am reminded of how good this card is! I will probably upgrade to ATI all in wonder 9800 in the future, but this card was good and did what I wanted it to do when I got it. :)

Strengths: A lot of features, stable performance (for me in XP Pro), relatively affordable.
Weaknesses: ATI tech support is non-existant, TV-On-Demand audio is awful, some TV channels are not clear.
Overall: I bought this card specifically to record home movies. The install went smooth (upgraded from Nvidia TNT2), no obvious compatability issues. However, when using the video capture utility (TV-On-Demand), I noticed a loud "hiss" on the audio. I went to ATI's website and found that this is a common problem. 1.5 - 2 years later, the status still has not changed. I have contacted ATI (which was not toll-free AND I had to call Canada) which was of no help. Finally, my last complaint is the TV tuner doesn't seem to be without it's flaws. When watching TV, I notice channels 09, 10, 11, 25, 62, 68, 78 all have bad reception ranging from annoying to unwatchable. These same channels come in crystal clear when the coax is plugged into a television. On a positive note, the card works great for everyday display adapter needs. I have it set to 1024x768 32-bit color @ 100Hz refresh rate and it never misses a beat. I am not a gamer, so I can't comment on how it performs in that arena. Overall, the card is ok. However, I doubt I'll buy anymore ATI product (simply because it's too difficult to get support and when you do get it, it's not much help).

Strengths: Good card, lots of features got it for $86.00 on eBay.
Weaknesses: Driver support by ATI and Guide plus cratches and this card is not compatible wiht Windows XP.
Overall: STAY AWAY form this card if you are going to run it with Windows XP. Upon installation, this cards is detected and Windows installs all the drivers. When you ut in the ati cd to install ati drivers and software, the cd doesnt have drivers for XP. So i got to thte website and i donwload Catalyst software. i install it and it deosnt work Upon bootup, the card is not detected by the system with the catalyst dirvers. After trying manually to insatlla every ati component, still not luck and a dozen installs , reinstalls , restarts and retores, still no luck, im gonna sell this card NOW and get an Ati 7500 all in wnder which has support for XP.

Strengths: Everything-in-one Graphic Card
Weaknesses: TV Graphics
Overall: I had this Graphic Card since August. I live in Canada and am 13 years old. This graphic card is recommend for regular gamers. ATI-All-In Wonder Radeon can distinguish the shadings and is good for 3-D's... I usually watch TV just because of it. I recommend if you watch TV, DVD or VCD, you should minimize for the best result for the picture graphic. When maximized, the picture looks blury and also, you can see the small squares. When playing games, the pictures are fairly smooth and you can't really see the bumps. The cost of the all in wonder is excellent and there is a Video-in. Also, The TV tuner is the reason why this is rated number one in PC World for 3 months.

Strengths: Very good card
Weaknesses: some of the software is a little clunky
Overall: Does what the hype indicates. I am not a serious gamer but bought for the video editing component and the TV DV features. I am pleased with the card and would buy again. The one time I e-mailed customer support they did not respond.
