HP Color Inkjet Cp1160
BUS INKJET CP1160 17/16PPM 8MB 2400X1200DPI USB/PAR/BLUETOOTH Review, by Alexandra Krasne November 17, 2001
WHAT'S HOT: We couldn't help but marvel at the crisp details and vivid colors in the Cp1160's photo samples, prompting us to award this printer a score of Outstanding--the best--on our photo output tests. Its color graphics quality was superb, with lively hues and great detail. Gray-scale images were breathtaking, with excellent gradients. While HP doesn't attach lofty speed ratings to the Cp1160, it outran many of the other printers in our tests by churning out 5.7 text pages per minute and 1.3 graphics pages per minute.
This is one of only a few printers we've tested capable of printing both fabulous photos and great text. In our tests, fonts as small as 2 points appeared sharp, while large, bold text remained bright and solid. Per-page costs are relatively inexpensive: just 6.7 cents for color and 3 cents for text. The printer includes well-written documentation with clear illustrations and explanations.
WHAT'S NOT: As you might expect, print quality like this doesn't come cheap; at $300, it costs substantially more than most of the printers we tested. The output tray is stacked over the input tray, so you'll have to remove prints in order to add paper. The small LCD screen perched atop the printer displays meaningless icons; for example, a triangle indicates that the printer is out of cyan ink, and a square means it's out of magenta ink. The LCD is recessed and slants away from you, making it hard to see. On our line-art tests, we saw some slight banding.
WHAT ELSE: For $79, HP sells a 250-page paper tray that increases the printer's total input capacity to 400 pages. This printer offers USB and parallel ports; you can also add an optional ethernet adapter for network printing. It also includes a duplexer--a $99 option for other HP printers.
UPSHOT: If you can afford this printer's high purchase price, you won't be disappointed with its output.

Strengths: Great print quality, good display on printer, seem to get good use of print cartridges
Weaknesses: Envelope feeder always jams and is worthless, most recently, all pages do not eject properly and jams the next page if not manually pulled our to the feeder.
Overall: I am disappointed that the printer does not eject paper properly and essentially needs someone sitting in front of the machines pulling each page out after it is printed. This was a $400 printer 18 months ago and I expected a more durable printer for this money. I used it at home and my usage has been very light. Print quality is great, but what good is it if the pages do not eject properly.

Strengths: I have been a 35mm buff for 30+ years and the print quality from this printer is amazing. And that from a digital camera, my Canon G2. Beautiful pictures and text. Makes my Canon BJC 6000 look bad.
Weaknesses: None that I can see. My kids use it everyday and in 4 months I have only had to change the cartridge once. Very Good!!
Overall: I bought this one due to a review in PC World. It came out the best but they did not like the price. I bought it and AM I GLAD! Thanks, PC World! Pictures, Texts, everything is beautiful. Buy this one, you won't be sorry.

Strengths: Quiet, quick, excellent quality on text and graphics
Weaknesses: Plastic doors and paper handler feel flimsy when being opened, but don't need to be opened very often.
Overall: Some clarification on past reviews. The printer has separate print heads for each color, but a single cartridge for all three colors. Haven't used it enough to determine if the ink is used up quickly. In 45 days I still have 3/4 of the cartridge left.

Overall: The previous reader robbiex must have made a mistake. This printer HAS separate cartridges for all colors. Are you referring another printer? I own another HP inkjet printer, just very amazed that the moderator allowed robbiex's post to get through. I rate the above to 'neutralise' his/her post. Please, moderator, until his/her post is removed or clarified, it should not be left there to mislead others.

Strengths: Excellent print quality
Weaknesses: Devours ink cartridges at an incredible rate. Printheads a separate and potentially costly item. Flimsy construction with awkward covers. Very poorly designed LCD display. Loves to eat envelopes.
Overall: Excellent print quality, but devours ink cartridges at an impossible rate. Higher capacity and more economical cartridges are a must for this printer to have any practical use. There should be a separate ink cartridges for each color. Separate printheads is a potential source of both trouble and on-going expense. Flimsy mechanical design with awkward, hard to use covers. Poorly design mecahnical paper pathway. Envelopes jam easily - a problem that is common to most HP printers.
