The $200 Samsung BD-P1600 delivers good-looking Blu-ray playback and adds a host of multimedia goodies--including BD-Live, Netflix On Demand, and Pandora streaming to your TV and home-theater sound system--previously found only in higher-end Samsung models. Unfortunately, this Blu-ray Disc player stumbles in a few simple areas.

Samsung BD-P1600 Blu-ray Disc Player
BD-P1600 Review, by Lincoln Spector, PCWorld December 21, 2009
When playing Blu-ray discs, the BD-P1600 sent very good but not spectacular images to our HDTV. Its best performance came in its handling of the opening sequence of the animated movie Cars, where it delivered vibrant, saturated colors.
On the other hand, the BD-P1600 didn't fare well with standard-definition DVDs, which the player must upconvert to 1080p.
Another issue: This model has a big flap over its front panel; the flap swings open when you eject the tray, and it stays open until you remember to close it, meanwhile posing a scrape hazard to anyone who walks past the player too closely.
The remote was disappointing, too: Many important buttons--such as the ones for Play, Pause, and the disc menu--are well placed but too small, while the setup button is quite large. The remote isn't backlit.
The BD-P1600 offers a relatively inexpensive way to add network streaming services, and it produces solid images; but you may find this unit's design frustrating. In our most recent appraisal, it finished in the middle of a pack that includes the Sony PlayStation 3, the Sony BDP-S560, and the Pioneer BDP-320.

Strengths: Network capabilities with Netflix, Pandora, YouTube; Disc loading speed; USB port for music or photos, price.
Weaknesses: Grinding sound when starting up - minor annoyance, and pursuing w/ Customer Service.
Overall: The grinding sound is the only thing that knocks it down from 5 stars. Initial firmware upgrade went extremely smooth (instruction sheet on top of the unit specifically states to do so). Netflix, YouTube, and Pandora work flawlessly (I use a hardwire connection), and was the main motivation to purchasing this player. I do get a small amount of video noise, but I believe it to be due to using a 50-foot HDMI cable - all my A/V equipment is in a remote closet.

Overall: I had trouble with wireless connection, until I remembered to disable my Comodo firewall.

Strengths: This is a much better blueray player than my first, and was half the price. It loads much faster than my sharp blueray player and has many added features that i use more than watching discs themselves. The netflix works fine on my network, i just plugged in the cat6 cable and had no problems connecting to netflix, blockbuster, youtube or pandora and i am wired into a 24 port gigabyte switch. The streaming quality was very good with blockbuster and netflix.
Weaknesses: The flip down door is a bit annoying
Overall: very good, went and bought 2 more for myself given the decent price.

Strengths: Blue Ray discs play well
Weaknesses: Netflix does not work with USB wireless or lan cable connection
Overall: Samsung techs are unable to resolve my issue with Netflix. Will stream Blockbuster, Pandora and Youtube OK, but Netflix is a bust. They say there are known issues, but their solution is to not use the USB wireless, but connect lan cable directly to the cable modem (disconnecting the rest of my home network). I would not recommend this player.

Strengths: Not a bad price,
Weaknesses: BE WARNED ABOUT BUYING ANY SAMSUNG PRODUCTS. Upgrading the firmware without a service person telling you to, will voided the warranty.
Overall: When you hook it up via wireless the unit will find that is has a new firmware update and like most technology you update it. So I did and than the thing indicated it could not read the disk. I called Samsung Canada and they said since I up dated the firmware without a service person telling me to, that voided my warranty. I discuss with his manager and he said the same thing I asked to talk to his manager and he said he did not have one, I said everyone is service has a manager. SO BE WARNED ABOUT BUYING ANY SAMSUNG PRODUCTS. If you follow the on screen upgrades you are on your own. Even page 55 states to update the the product on occasion, I have worked in technology for 25 years and never have I heard of such a policy. I will never buy a Samsung product again.

Strengths: Fast disc read upon loading. Picture quality of Netflix HD streaming is decent. Would purchase again.
Weaknesses: Flipping scenes in Netflix streaming. See comments for details.
Overall: The forward/rewind/pause buttons on the netflix streaming has a very delayed response, can be very annoying, and needs user experience to adjust to the timing of the remote-to-player response. Granted that the video source is streaming, I am expecting a bit of a delay, but this player somehow extends the delay a bit longer. For instance, when you are rewinding/forwarding scenes, there is a 1-, 2-second or longer delay between pressing STOP or PAUSE before the streaming video actually does(or sometimes it doesn't stop/pause after repeated pressing). However, these are minor glitches that do not in any way negatively impact the solid performance of the player.
