Hercules 3D Prophet II MX 32MB AGP Review, by null September 14, 2000
WHAT'S HOT: As with most cards based on the GeForce2 MX chip, the good news is all about value. Though far from the fastest board, the 3D Prophet II MX still managed to clock in at around 60 frames per second in all but our highest test resolution of 1600 by 1200 pixels at 16-bit and 32-bit color depths--great performance for a $99 budget card. Thanks to a recent driver update, this board posted impressive image-quality scores.
WHAT'S NOT: Low frame rates at the higher resolutions hurt the 3D Prophet II MX's overall score. Like the other MX boards we tested, the 3D Prophet II MX was unable to complete our Unreal Tournament and Test Drive 6 tests at 1600 by 1200 pixels and a 32-bit color depth.
WHAT ELSE: This board is bundled with E-Color's 3Deep, a color-calibration utility that helps to ensure that your monitor displays 3D games with accurate lighting and shading. The software's wizard guides you through the necessary steps to set up your monitor.
BEST USE: If you want to replace the graphics board on an older AGP-capable PC, the bargain-priced 3D Prophet II MX should be an ideal fit, as it gives you a worthwhile performance boost without making you spend more money than is warranted by your older equipment. You'll get more useful life out of your existing PC while saving big bucks for your next major system upgrade.

Strengths: Excellent drivers, good 3D speed, 5.5ns memory lends to overclocking to near-GF2 DDR levels of performance, excellent 16bit performance
Weaknesses: needs faster memory, not a faster core like the GF2 MX400 (stupid), 2D quality is suspect over 1024x768, slower 32bit than Radeon LE
Overall: I purchased this card after initial reviews stating the overclockability of this card. I installed a blorb (blue orb) fan and some ram sinks, and now I can max the card out at 220 core / 220 memory. This gives 700-800 3DMark 2000 points in the standard benchmark, and approaches the GF2 32Meg DDR scores in 16bit color @ 1024. The MX cards are definitely the 800lb gorillas of the 3D accelerator market, and clearly NVIDIA made an excellent mainstream product. The card plays all current generations of games with excellent speed and decent 3D quality. Counterstrike is very pleasurable with the res set at 1024x768@16 bit color. Card will be replaced by a GF3 Ti 200 soon, but was a good trooper for the year 2001. Buy the card for less than $75 unless you already own a GF2 or Radeon class video card. I paid MSRP at Best Buy in July 2000 for $129 and it has definitely been worth the dough, without upgrading for a year and a half!
