ATI Radeon 32MB SDR
December 27, 2000
WHAT'S HOT: Now the only card on our chart costing less than $100, the $99 Radeon compares favorably with the GeForce2 MX boards. In our subjective tests the board impressed us with its image quality. When the resolutions climb, the Radeon starts to shine, especially in 32-bit color. In Test Drive 6 the Radeon sped to 71 frames per second in 1024-by-768-pixel resolution--more than 10 fps faster than its nearest value-priced competitor. And unlike most of the boards we tested, the Radeon 32MB was able to complete our Test Drive 6 test at 1600-by-1200-pixel resolution in 32-bit color.
WHAT'S NOT: In our image-quality tests the Radeon 32MB displayed an overabundance of contrast, resulting in a loss of detail in dark shadows. In Unreal Tournament this card stuttered in complex scenes. You'll need to purchase this hard-to-find board either online or in smaller computer stores.
WHAT ELSE: Like ATI's All-in-Wonder Radeon, the Radeon 32MB SDR features ATI's improved MPEG-2 decoding for a better DVD picture on PC monitors.
BEST USE: DVD playback and speedy 32-bit gaming performance make this card a good choice for gamers on a budget, or business users looking for an inexpensive graphics upgrade.

Strengths: Pretty good picture quality on a lot of games, applications as well.
Weaknesses: Verryyyy low FPS in a lot of games, run Tribes 2 with many options turned down to 3/4 of the bar
Overall: Unlike Goombah1, I was stupid enough to buy in 2000, I shelled out $130+ , I should have waited a year or two, better Radeon cards came out, like the Radeon 7000 pci, which looks very pleasing. 3D prophet Hercules 9000 pci is the best pci card out right now, but its only available in the UK, which is a major let-down since I live in the Good Ol' US of A.

Strengths: It gives nice crisp graphics, web pages are clear, and game play is average , for a pci based card.
Weaknesses: It seems to fall of on the frame rates , usually at the worst times. But gives a nice picture. Frame Rates were almost the same on my "old" ATI Xpert 98 32mb agp card.
Overall: I was hoping to see a difference, and I did. It emptied my wallet 50 bucks, which wasnt too bad, but didnt give the improvements I had hoped for. Seems like I should have spent another 100 and gotten a DDR Pine , or DDR ATI Radeon. Pure and simple, you get what you "pay" for. At least it does work. As of this statement I havent tried the TV out feature. Been hard enough trying to run CFS1 on my 17" monitor, @100 htz refresh, so the tv out would slow it down more. PC World's review, said some nice "test" results... but it didnt give me those #'s in CFS1. Usually down around 20-40 fps. and at times up over 100 fps... screwy frames !! but nice imaging.
