VisionTek VisionTek XTASY 6964 AGP 64MB GeForce3 TI 500

VisionTek Xtasy 6964
VisionTek XTASY 6964 AGP 64MB GeForce3 TI 500 Review, by Alexandra Krasne January 18, 2002
WHAT'S HOT: In MDK2, at 1600 by 1200 resolution using 32-bit color, the Xtasy 6964's frame rate, at 102 frames per second, was about forty percent higher than the rates achieved by the Radeon 8500. However, In Quake III at the same resolution and color depth, the VisionTek card was only marginally faster than the 8500.
WHAT'S NOT: This card is one of the most expensive power cards in our current batch. Colors looked bland and washed out in MDK2, and texture anomalies hindered the card's scores in Test Drive 6, where yellow shapes appeared and the screen occasionally went dark for a moment. Also, we had to install the card's drivers manually because Autorun didn't work on the driver CD.
WHAT ELSE: The Xtasy 6964 supplies a DVI-out port for use with a digital monitor.
UPSHOT: This card is fast and it's very expensive, too. Gamers itching for speed may want to wait until the price comes down.

Strengths: Solid; Smooth framerates; Still a Contender to this day
Weaknesses: Still a bit pricey; Slower than a Geforce 4 Ti 4600
Overall: This is a good card. When I read about the reviews, a few things come to my mind. Most of time, if you have problems with powerful video cards, it's because you don't have sufficient power to run them. Geforce 3 cards, need a lot of power to operate. I would recommend at least a 300-350 watt 'quality' power supply. Another is drivers. My opinion is, that vendor specific drivers aren't very good. Some might argue that, but nvidia has a vast array of drivers. I believe that with this specific card, right now, the 28.32 nvidia drivers are the most stable. This card isn't the fastest on the market, but it still is a competitor in the gaming community. With a decent processor(1.3 ghz+), this card will run games like Unreal Tournament 2003 well. I can't say much for price though, because I got a real good deal on mine. Cooling is another factor that most people aren't realizing upgrading from older systems to the newer, faster ones. If you own an Athlon processor, and don't have proper ventilation, the inside of your computer will get very hot. Athlon's and the newer Pentium chips run hot, and need proper cpu & case cooling. A cooler system will yield a longer lasting one. I hope this clears up any confusion. Robert

Strengths: None
Weaknesses: Visiontek itself
Overall: TO consumer customers...know this! Opened the box and did not work in 4 PC's assumed bad. Sent back to Visiontek. They send it back and say it is fine. Still doesn't work in any PC it's been tried in. They say to bad! This card is suppose to have a lifetime warranty. I have seen two of these cards do this exact same thing. They have a problem and are not standing behind their warranty. This was the PCI version...but we are talking about the integrity of VisionTek..more than the product. Spread the word.

Strengths: While it worked it was fast
Weaknesses: I'm on my second one in three months. Lock ups, anomalies in 3D mode you've seen the likes before.
Overall: I back to using my Geforce1 DDR card again and it still works. I have sent the Geforce3 Ti 500 back again let's see how what they send me fairs this time.

Strengths: Its pretty good because its made by Nvidia. Of course it will kick butt.
Weaknesses: Over rated and over priced. RADEON 8500 is just as good but put down because of the "DRIVER" problems. SO WHAT! THEY WILL FIX IT!
Overall: All you computer freaks out there, I don't care what you are saying. I say ATI tried their best this time and kick Nvidia's butt. Yeah, the 8500 has some problems with the driveres but hey! What else is there? ITs a perfectly good card! Ti-500 is basically just an over priced and overrated. I say buy the card that is cheaper and is just as good. The Radeon 8500 is best price and equal the Ti-500. Said and done.
