Fujifilm FinePix 2600 Zoom
December 18, 2001
WHAT'S HOT:
Fujifilm kept the 2600 Zoom extremely
basic, which is both its strength and its weakness. This
camera offers almost nothing beyond the essential controls
you need to take a picture--which means it's unlikely to
intimidate even the most novice photographer. Its few menus
are extremely simple--none are more than two levels deep.
Fujifilm didn't stint on the camera's storage: Our test camera included a 16MB SmartMedia card, about double the capacity you typically get with a 2-megapixel camera. Another nice touch is the two AA NiMH rechargeable batteries that come with a battery recharger. And the FinePix 2600 Zoom is a nice-looking camera, with its silver case and integrated sliding lens cover.
WHAT'S NOT: The FinePix's image quality was far from stunning. Though on-screen shots were among the best we've seen, its print sample scores were in the cellar. Photos of our mannequin showed fine detail and color shading, but her skin tones were somewhat off-color and showed harsh highlights. Our still-life test shots produced whites with a tannish tint and heavy moire patterns. Our outdoor shot in bright sunlight looked underexposed, with heavy loss of shadow details.
You must use the menus to change all of the camera's settings, even such fundamentals as macro and self-timer modes. The few buttons you get are for zoom, menu navigation, and image management. The dearth of useful buttons makes the camera a bit slower and more complicated to use. The camera's simplicity also means you have to do without some of the more useful features typically found in other point-and-shoot models, such as program modes for better shots of action scenes, twilight scenes, and portraits.
Though the camera supports Digital Print Order Format, it's extremely limited and baffling--it took us about 20 minutes and three readings of the two-page instructions to finally figure out how to work it. The FinePix's implementation of DPOF does not let you set the size and number of prints for each selected image. The date imprint function is similarly limited: You must either apply it to all of the selected images, or to none at all.
WHAT ELSE: The controls the camera does have are relatively easy to learn and use. A simple, three-position selector switch lets you take still shots, capture movies, or play back images; the optical zoom is smooth and easily set for accurate framing; and the color LCD is large and bright. The LCD has a simple grid framing option, which is useful for getting horizons straight. When pressing the trigger, there's a clear step between locking the exposure and focus and taking the shot.
The FinePix's basic exposure options are more than adequate for a point-and-shoot camera. Seven white-balance settings should take care of most lighting problems; however, it doesn't include the manual white-balance calibration option found in more-sophisticated cameras. It does have all the basic flash controls, including a slow-synch mode that's not typically found in lower-end cameras. In manual mode, you can adjust the exposure value and white balance. Otherwise, the camera is fully automatic. Three resolution settings and three compression levels give plenty of image-quality options.
This FinePix does not let you review and delete an image immediately after taking a shot (while in capture mode). However, pressing the menu button during playback automatically pops up the delete menu. You can take Motion JPEG movies of up to 20 seconds, but without sound. And the optical zoom doesn't work in movie mode (though you can use digital zoom).
Fujifilm bundles a nice collection of consumer software with the FinePix 2600. The FinePixViewer is a handy utility for organizing and renaming image files. It also lets you use the camera as a Web cam, for low-budget videoconferencing. ArcSoft VideoImpressions 1.6FP is a simple package for viewing and editing your FinePix movies. Also included on the CD is Microsoft's NetMeeting and Windows Media Player, and Apple's QuickTime player.
UPSHOT: With moderate resolution, basic controls, and an optical zoom, the Fujifilm's FinePix 2600 is a nice fit for casual photographers who want to keep it simple.

Strengths: It won the best point and shoot camera award. What more can you say about it?
Weaknesses: No adapter included
Overall: This camera is the best. The pictures are so realistic and life like. It has more than paid for itself in not going to the store to develop pictures. It has some difficulties in taking pictures at night without a tripod because it thinks it does not have enough light and the movement from your hands makes the pictures blurred without a flash, however, with a tripod this is quickly remedied. All in all, its a value that can't be beat :).

Strengths: Excellent Value. Easy to use.
Weaknesses: Lens cover can be a problem until you get used to it. 2 Megs is only 2 megs.
Overall: By far the best value I could find in the 2 Meg category and under $300. Actually picked it up @ Overstock.com. Had previously owned a 1.3 Meg Fuji (left in S.F.) and this was the replacement which actully cost less than the original. Easy to use, decent software and editing.

Strengths: Great pictures, easy to use.
Weaknesses: None.
Overall: Lemme just say this is an awesome camera. The problems other people have with it are their own fault. The lens cover takes TWO clicks to open, there is no design flaw. The software is not necessary, just plug the camera into your computer and it becomes the F drive. It can be used as a 128mb zip drive that you can take around to any computer, just plug it in. It can also take a beating.. dropped it a couple times onto hard tile floor, sound made me want to cry, but nothing broke! I loved this camera, too bad it got stolen.

Strengths: Beautiful picture quality, easy to use, battery life, macro capablility, compact size
Weaknesses: Weak flash indoors, red-eye
Overall: This camera fits my needs as grandparent very well. Prints are excellent using medium resolution format. Camera is almost 2 years old, have had no problems. Size is small enough to fit into a purse. Software is easy to use, and with USB connectivity its simple to connect.

Strengths: Nice pictures in daylight, very good price, fast USB connection, movie capability, useful features, excellent customer support from Fuji
Weaknesses: Has great trouble taking pictures in the dark even with a flash
Overall: A very nice camera for point and shoot photography but cannot take pictures very well in anything other than daylight. I must say however that Fuji UK gave excellent support when my camera got damaged due to an accident and replaced it FOC.
