HP iPaq Personal Mini-CD Player PM-1

Compaq IPaq Personal Mini-CD Player PM-1
iPaq Personal Mini-CD Player PM-1 Review, by Melissa J. Perenson December 14, 2001

WHAT'S HOT: The PM-1 uses 8-cm CDs--mini-CDs that hold 185MB of content--and is one of the smallest 8-cm-format CD players we've seen. This smartly designed unit features logically oriented buttons along the side, as well as an in-line remote control that includes a two-line LCD for viewing artist and track title information. The PM-1 uses rechargeable AAA batteries and has an 8-minute buffer to eliminate skips and help conserve battery power.
WHAT'S NOT: There's no case, and the unit's paint scratches easily.
WHAT ELSE: You need a CD-RW drive to transfer or copy music to the discs you want to play in the PM-1. Five equalizer modes help boost sonic quality. The package includes three blank mini-CD-R disks, Musicmatch Jukebox and Windows Media Player, and neck headphones.
UPSHOT: If you want to carry lots of songs in a portable and lightweight package, this player's for you.

Strengths: Great sound quality and convienience
Weaknesses: Batteries do not last long, stress on the wired remote caused malfunction.
Overall: Great buy, battery packs are easy to fabricate with a trip to Radio Shack. If the remote had not stopped functioning, I would still have it in my posession. Time for a replacement!

Strengths: Very Portable, Nice Remote, Decent Anti-Skip, Easy To Read Display.
Weaknesses: Poor battery life, Rather Plain and Ugly design.
Overall: I was looking for a small Mp3/CD Player and discovered this Compaq IPaq 8CM Mp3/CD player. I compared it to other ones on the market and this one was the best out of the bunch. I found you can put about 30 songs at 192KBps bitrate onto 1 8cm CD-R which is pretty decent. Probably can fit 60 songs at a lower bit rate if you don't care about the song quality. Its basically skip free because the CD Player buffers the entire Mp3 song, but because it stops the motor so frequently it shortens the battery life. It runs on 2 AAA batteries and gets about 3 - 5 hours battery life, so if you're planning on going on long road trips you better pack extra batteries. If you're looking for a Portable Mp3/CD player this is probably the best one out there (for the time being)
