WHAT'S HOT: The Presario 2701 comes standard with two optical drives. With the bundled 8X/4X/24X CD-RW drive inserted in the notebook's modular bay, you can copy data or music from a disc loaded in the Presario's 8X DVD-ROM drive, which is fixed on the opposite side of the case. The 2701 that we evaluated also came with a second battery. (The optional $99 battery does not come standard, but its cost is included in the $1999 system price listed in this review.) With the second battery in the modular bay, you can stretch the Presario's already fine battery life of 3 hours, 19 minutes. Both the secondary and main batteries have handy LED gauges, so you don't have to turn the notebook on to check how much longer they'll last.
Eye-catching accents on this dark laptop include a shiny chrome border around the deepset touchpad, stylized mouse buttons partially bisected by a four-way scroll button, and black shortcut and volume buttons in a chrome panel above the keyboard. Compaq also gets points for the stylish way that the sole PC Card slot dovetails with the DVD-ROM drive.
WHAT'S NOT: This Presario model is heavier than most all-in-one notebooks, at 8.4 pounds including the floppy drive, AC adapter, and power cord. With both optical drives and the second battery inserted, the total weight amounts to 10.1 pounds. You can lower the weight to a still-heavy but more manageable 7.5 pounds by using the weight-saver module.
You could be swapping modular devices--such as the the floppy drive and the optical drive--often. The bay's "quick-release" doesn't eject devices far enough, leaving you to tug them out the rest of the way. Our only other beef is that you cannot access the hard drive, so you'll have to send the notebook back to the vendor if you want to upgrade it.
WHAT ELSE: The Presario 2701 has all standard notebook connections and then some, including an S-Video port for using a TV as a monitor, and a high-speed FireWire (IEEE 1394) port. These reside on the back, along with two USB ports and most of the notebook's other connections, under a long plastic door that refused to close properly on our unit. As another extra, Compaq throws in a network cable.
The Presario 2701 lacks dedicated audio controls beyond volume buttons, but the sound is fairly strong, thanks in part to speakers on the front of the case. Typing is comfortable, and flip-out feet on the bottom of the notebook let you adjust the angle. Both a printed manual and an Acrobat-format manual come with the laptop. The 2701 does not come with any productivity software, though, so you'll have to buy and load that yourself. The Presario's PC WorldBench 4 score of 97 is about what we would expect from a 1-GHz/733-MHz Pentium III-M laptop with 512MB of RAM.
UPSHOT: Compaq offers consumers nice extras with the Presario 2701, at a reasonable price. Those who spend a lot of time burning CDs should appreciate the Presario 2701's fixed DVD-ROM drive and the bundled CD-RW drive in the modular bay. However, this heavy unit is not really convenient for toting around.

Strengths: Excellent reliability! Solid, well-designed, and stylish construction. Excellent battery life even when using the ROM's for gaming. Brilliant UXGA display and crisp sound.
Weaknesses: After running the DVD-ROM for a considerable amount of time, the unit can be warm. Especially when charging. Regardless, i felt it was nothing to complain about.
Overall: Originally i have been an anti-Compaq consumer. i've long questioned their desktop machines and never really considered their laptops. Upon comparison to other laptop machines, i found the Presario 2700 series to be a gem. Compared to the Dell machines, the Presario's construction is unbeatable. A solid keyboard and actually *appealing* case blow the Dell away. i really appreciated the fact that Compaq doesn't load up their machines with programs you'll never use rather they send the CD's and you can load them at your descreation. In the 4 months that i've had my Presario, i have had not a single error or lock-up and have never had a problem with any of the physical aspects of the unit. The 'Future' bay is extremely easy to use and the battery can easily be swapped beneath. My model incorporates the UXGA screen which is amazingly vivid. As far as hardware, i've had zero problems. The 32mb video card is great for gaming which is a priority for myself as well as the RAM, which can be upgraded to 512mb, that is necessary for driving programs such as Adobe's web suite software. In the end, i would recommend this unit or any Compaq to anyone who is considering the purchase of a notebook. Though this unit is not designed for those who require a 3lb travel machine, it is perfect for anyone who simply wants a fast, reliable machine that is of solid construction...all for a price that kills any comporable machine.

Strengths: Great performance and power at an reasonable price.Uniquely stylish,with a touch of chrome; reminds me of a Lincoln Navigator.
Weaknesses: A little heavy but I really don't count that as an weakness.
Overall: I highly recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a new computer,I love this computer.I watch my DVD movies and burn my CD's anywhere. This machine was purchase for business but I love the entertaintment it provides.It's all good.

Strengths: top notch - Has not failed in any respect since I have owned; this is my 2nd notebook in the last 4 years and this one is the tops
Weaknesses: None on the hardware side ! It purrs along. . .
Overall: Windows XP seems to be a real improvement over win98. The only problem in the software side has been the "winDVD video program" that came with the software - it has not worked, but has not been a bother for the Windows XP also has a DVD-CD player and that works fine! I love my new machine; in fact I am using it over my desktop and tak it back and forth to work and whenever I travel; I have two (2) docking stations so it really is easy to use with all the prepherials

Strengths: Great, reliable performance at an affordable price.
Weaknesses: A little heavy; does not come with Word, only Works.
Overall: I initially bought a Dell 8100 and was immediately disappointed with the Dell's keyboard and display. Switched to the 2701 and have been very impressed. Had to add Works Suite 2002 ($75 from mediaok.com) because Compaq did not include Word. Also had to install Roxio CD burner because Compaq failed to include that, also. The great performance and low price more than made up for the software shortcomings. Highly recommend!

Strengths: Every thing worked out of the box.The most bang for buck that I could find.The $100.rebate fromCompact and $150 from Best buy.com made this an outstanding deal.
Weaknesses: Could have used a bigger better book Windows XP for Dummies made life much better.
Overall: This was my first new computer in three years,I had good service from my NEC ready but this machine represents a quantom leap forward. The speed and quality of the graphics and ease of handling have made operating it a growing joy. If I had ordered my computter Custom configured I could have had 1024 ram and 32 vidio ram added for a nominal $190. I didn't chose that option because in real life it would have cost $500. more. All in all I am very pleased.
