ViewSonic VG171
ViewSonic VG171 Review
- WHAT'S HOT: The ViewSonic VG171 won the top spot among 17-inch LCD monitors in our March 2002 roundup thanks to its outstanding display quality and a comparatively low street price of $769. It offers both digital and analog video interfaces; tested via its digital video mode, this model outscored all of its competitors in both our text and graphics tests. Our panel of judges remarked on its sharp text in Microsoft Word and Excel documents, as well as its rich and vivid colors in our photo and color scale tests. Though the digital mode of a dual-input monitor typically provides better images than the analog mode, we saw little difference between the two from the VG171: When we ran some of the same test screens in the unit's analog mode, text was still pleasingly sharp--Arial text looked clear down to 7.5 points--and photos had saturated, natural-looking colors.

Overall Evaluation: i have had this monitor for 3 years doing some of my best graphic design work on it. no problems here. certainly not the best picture out there, but unless i was to compare side by side, i see no issues.

Strengths: Good looking display.
Weaknesses: DVI does not work at with several ATI cards and WinXP. Analog VGA is marginal.
Overall Evaluation: It seems to be hit or miss but there is a known issue with this monitor and some ATI graphics cards. I've been waiting a year and there is still no fix. With my 5 year old low end ATI card, the display works fine. I do not recommend this monitor. It may work for you but why take the risk.
