Brother HL-2600CN Review

by Dan Littman

Brother priced the HL-2600CN so that any office can afford a basic color laser, but extras cost a lot.

WHAT'S HOT: A color laser at $1500 makes a very attractive deal--though Brother's HL-2600CN is not the only color laser at that price. The 12.1-ppm text-printing speed isn't the fastest, but it's speedy enough for an office printer. PC World's print-quality jury liked the 2600's clean, black text output and top-notch ability to print crisp narrow lines. Though there is no printed manual, Brother provides excellent on-screen documentation that includes animated tutorials on many common set-up and maintenance tasks. The driver installer also walks you through getting the printer to run.

WHAT'S NOT: The 2600CN's color graphics looked somewhat off, with a purplish cast throughout. Even without the odd purple hue, the 2400-by-600 resolution appeared grainy and produced blocky transitions in shaded areas. The paper tray holds only 250 sheets, which might be inconvenient for a busy office. The lack of an auxiliary paper feed means you can load only one kind of paper at a time. However, you can add the optional 500-sheet feeder for $649. Brother also charges $1000 to equip the 2600CN with a duplexer.

WHAT ELSE: Brother's driver allows manual duplexing if you don't buy the mechanical duplexer--that's a capability many vendors don't offer for printers that have a duplexer available. The HL-2600CN's graphics printing speed of 1.8 ppm is average among our current batch of color lasers.

UPSHOT: For cost-conscious small businesses, the 2600CN's great price and fast performance may offset its limited paper capacity and marginal color graphics.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Low cost per page, web interface, some unusual, but neat features like secure print.

Weaknesses: Poor paper handling, expensive optional attachments.

Overall Evaluation: This is a nice enough printer, and it comes with a 1 year on site warranty from Brother. It has great potential with regard to print quality, but I believe the weaknesses I mentioned above make this a bad choice for someone who has to manage more than one of them. The paper handling is pretty poor. The included paper tray will hold 250 sheets of letter paper, but the envelopes are restricted to less than 25 per tray. Even when using the envelopes specifically reccomended by Brother, I found there to be about a 95% paper jam rate with greater than 10 envelopes in the tray. With fewer than 10 envelopes, the paper jam rate would be about 80%. In addition to the paper jams, poor handling of the envelopes made for some interesting output. Several envelopes were printed crooked, streaked, or curved. The first test page I printed from the printer was of excellent quality. Each page afterwards has shown a ghost image of the last page. After several calls to the service center, I was finally directed to a workable solution. The standard support tech's are only familiar with traditional lasers, so be sure to ask for someone in the color laser support department. The optional attachments available are all over $200, even the legal paper tray. I wouldn't even *try* to use a duplexer attachment on a machine that already has difficulty not jamming up. I'd really like to reccomend this printer, as I'm sure it will be well worth my money, but buyer beware of a few extra hassles that you will get in return for a sub $700 color laser.
