Olympus C-2040 ZOOM DIGITAL CAMERA

Bottom Line
The C-2040 is a solid, general-purpose digital camera that allows fully automatic or manual operation for more creative license. But photographers who like enlargements and are picky about fine details should opt for the C-3040.
Olympus Camedia C-2040 Zoom
C-2040 ZOOM DIGITAL CAMERA Review, by Carla Thornton October 25, 2001
WHAT'S HOT:
The C-2040 offers aperture-priority, shutter-priority, and
full-manual exposure controls. Fifteen possible combinations of image quality
and size--including a range of sizes for uncompressed TIFF pictures--should
satisfy just about any photography need. The C-2040 turned in good picture
quality, producing photos with good detail and accurate colors. Our outdoor
scene could have been brighter and crisper, though, and a few artifacts
disrupted the fine lines in our test pattern shots.
WHAT'S NOT: If you like to switch settings between shots, you may get frustrated: You must use the C-2040's menu system to change image size, jump to self-timer mode, or switch between exposure modes. Olympus also uses complex, unintuitive labels for picture settings, including names such as SHQ and SQ1--a situation made more complicated by the unit's wide range of picture sizes and compression levels. The C-2040 has passable battery life of 217 shots.
WHAT ELSE: The C-2040 lets you choose among auto-bracketing, manual focus, sequence shooting, preset white-balance options, and an auto-exposure lock. Thumb-pad buttons make scrolling through shots quick and easy. Olympus nicely incorporated controls into the camera's zoom switch: In image playback mode, you can rapidly toggle from a nine-shot thumbnail view up to a 3X magnification of one shot.
UPSHOT: The picture settings are bewildering, but the C-2040 Zoom offers very good image quality and lots of flexibility.

Strengths: Great picture quality; lots of options for different picture qualities, exposures, etc.; adjustable flash (factory setting was kinda bright); AA batteries are lasting forever; good value
Weaknesses: almost too many picture options; menu system is a little more complicated than it needed to be; included lithium batteries didn't last long and cost a ton to replace
Overall: I was not exactly sure of what to look for when I decided to buy a digital camera. After doing a little bit of straight spec comparison, the Camedia 2040-Z seemed a great choice for the money, though I knew I'd want a larger memory card than the included 8 MB SmartMedia card. I had originally ordered it to go along with me on my family vacation; it arrived just in time so I was able to test it's abilities right away. I came back from San Francisco with nearly 80 high-quality (1024x768) pictures that will let me remember that vacation for a long time to come. Another reason that I chose this camera instead of a higher-resolution model was because I knew I'd be doing less printing and more electronic proliferation of my pictures so it works well that I can take so many great looking pictures in a usable resolution for web-work and emailing. It's a great camera and I have little doubt that I will stick with Olympus in the future.

Strengths: excellent lens quality. f/1.8 aperture for low light. accurate flash for indoor shots. good color balance.
Weaknesses: menu system not so convinient, especially for manual mode.
Overall: Overall, a fantastic digicam for the money. It features a f/1.8 large aperture high quality aspheric 3X zoom lens which produces sharp pictures with good color balance both indoor and outdoor. Exposure with built-in flash is very accurate. Lightweight. Good for upto 8x10 size. My only complaint goes with the menu system which takes sometime to get used to, if you are more than a point-and-shooter and want to use manual mode to take more control.

Strengths: Great photo quality for up to 8 x 10 photos. Easy to operate, but the menu system takes a little getting used to. Overall, a great camera for under $ 350. I'm very pleased with this camera.
Weaknesses: Lens cover is cheesy, and has a tendency to fall off. Auto focus is a little slow. Had to buy NiMH batteries for it.
Overall: A great entry level camera, but with some fairly "professional" features. A good, bright, fast lens. Easy to use in "auto" mode. The included photo editing software is adequate.

Strengths: Good in low light. Great Value!
Weaknesses: Battery drainer. No audio on movies. Only 8mb smart media card.
Overall: I found if you buy rechargable batteries and 128mb smart media card, this is the best valued camera I have found! Great quality pictures at a low price. Read the reviews at cnet.com and zdnet.com and you'll see.

Strengths: Very versatile -- you can use the program-auto-everything mode for good snapshots, or take over with manual control of apertures, shutter speed, etc. Also the ability to hook up an external flash.
Weaknesses: lens is basic point-and-shoot quality -- not bad, not great. Autofocus is kinda slow; not the best choice for action photos.
Overall: For the price, a very competitive camera. I've gotten some excellent 8x10 and 8x12 enlargements (done through an online photo provider) that were pretty much identical in look to 35mm photos -- along with a few that looked pretty poor when blown up. Overall, I'm well pleased with it, although I'm looking to move up to a 3000-series Olympus real soon.
