Canon S750 Color Bubble Jet Printer
S750 COLOR BUBBLE JET PRINTER 20/13PPM 2400X1200DPI 248KB (Canon-7290A001) Review, by Dan Littman March 8, 2002

WHAT'S HOT: Canon's S750 cranks out text documents at 7.2 pages per minute--the fastest of any ink jet printer we've tested in a while--and its 1.2-ppm graphics printing speed ranks highly. We also like the S750's text quality, which looks solid black, has even weighting, and is legible even at very small fonts. Glossy photos were impressive with bright, saturated colors, excellent detail, and realistic shading. If Canon's ink yield specifications are accurate, the S750's inks are the cheapest per page of any printer we've tested (less than nine cents).
WHAT'S NOT: Color graphics on ordinary paper look moderately good, with slightly flat colors and some loss of detail. Gray-scale quality, however, was barely adequate: Printers that excel with glossy photos usually produce good-quality gray-scale images, but the S750 laces the output with narrow white stripes, and detail disappears behind overly dark tones. The output tray doesn't attach well--that's no problem if you never move the printer, but if you move it a lot, you may have to reattach the tray each time.
WHAT ELSE: Canon provides comprehensive documentation with the S750. The setup guide is a full-fledged manual, and the on-screen help files explain printer use in great detail. You can run the printer with a USB or parallel interface, and the driver has a setting to print snapshot-size photos right to the edge of the paper.
UPSHOT: Spend a little more, get a little more; this printer is a great choice for quick, good-looking text and photos.

Strengths: Fast, quiet, uses hardly any ink, was relatively inexpensive, parallel or USB connection.
Weaknesses: Output paper tray can be knocked off easily.
Overall: I had a Canon before this that lasted about 5 years. I was already sold on the concept of only change the ink you use, but found that my old Canon still used ink over time just by sitting there. This model doesn't seem to use any unless you print. I haven't changed the ink cartridges at all since I bought it and I still have plenty of ink left approximately one year later. I haven't used the photo software or borderless printing options, but have printed many "standard" text pages and my kids have printed their share of items from kid software. The print quality is great and I noticed a huge jump in speed going from my old Canon BJ210. Even though the i820 is out and seems faster with all the same quality, I'm recommending this printer to our church because we still need the parallel connection. I'm so glad I got this printer!

Strengths: Very fast, quiet, separate catridges for each single color
Weaknesses: Somehow blurred text using standard mode on plain paper
Overall: So our lab needs a printer to print out scientific papers, usually containing lots of text plus some figures/photos, and we need something fast. This one comes at our expectation: only 30 seconds to print out a nearly full 8.5x11 page. However the text is somehow blurred. High quality mode prints out fine but takes 1.5 min, still faster than most inkjet

Strengths: SUPERB text printer. VERY fast. Quiet. Ink costs wonderfully low. Tons of fexibilty. USB or Parallel. Very fair price.
Weaknesses: Color... kinda' blue/grey. Gimme' plain old putty.
Overall: Everything I've thrown at it so far has exceeded my expectations. Setup was a breeze thanks to the step by step instruction sheet. There's no real speed advantage of USB over Parallel because of print spooling, printer memory and the mechanics of cartridge travel. I re-used my old parallel cable. USB's real plus would be hot-swap capability. The S750 proved it's text mettle in an experiment using one of the basic page setup features called "Page Layout Printing" where it prints in booklet form.. two (or more) pages on one sheet in landscape mode. I sent two full, very detailed Excel sheets with text, graphics and color into "Page Layout" and was astonished at the clarity of text less than a sixteenth of an inch tall. The only photo printing (pack of five ea. 4x6 inch borderless photo paper sample included) I've done was of a 30 year old scanned and enhanced pic that printed quite well. I'll certainly utilize the photo print feature when I get a digital camera. The installation CD contains "3 steps to prints Easy-Photo", "Photo-Stitch" and "Zoom Browser"..an organizer, slide-show, image import/export utility. This is my second Canon. I had a 4300 that churned b/w text and color invoices for 4 years and with the exception of 2 print heads failing and being noisey....was insanely cheap to keep. Other than black, I use more yellow in invoice printing, so I love the individual tanks. Canon's low ink cost is legendary. The tradition continues.

Strengths: Sturdy, Fast, Price, Excellent Print Quality, Ability to Upgrade Printer Head and Very Cheap Ink
Weaknesses: None So Far
Overall: Printers have come a long way! This printer is very, very fast while still holding on to quality. I owned two HP's before this printer and I can honestly say that I will not go back to HP. Besides print quality with this printer, ink cartridges are almost half the price of HP and you get more ink in each cartridge! If you do the research you will understand what I am talking about. As far as photo printing is concerned, I haven't done any yet so I cannot comment, but it does print excellent web-based pictures on regular paper. I suggest going to Best Buy or any other major retailer to get a demo of this product before you buy HP. I really mean that.

Strengths: fast, low cost of ink cartridges, great pics on glossly canon paper, bordless photos
Weaknesses: ink bumps all over pictures, poor canon support, canon paper hard to find, usb cord not included
Overall: Pic's came out great on Canon paper but had ink bumps all over them. Canon's support is supposedly 24 hrs but phone only and this printer was not yet on the phone help. Still have yet to be able to use with the USB port only working on parallel port - Canon has no clue. Canon paper is not carried everywhere and when you find it, it's usually just the glossy photo paper. Paper tray is flimsy.
